View Full Version : Desire for and absence of coop in fps games
To me it seems many people miss coop in FPS games. It seems like it belongs to the time before 3d models for enemies, almost. I only know Serious Sam and Halo (hardly count it because it's console :p) in "modern" times that has it. What do you people think of it? Do you miss it? Why is it so absent? Why are developers starting to put it into RTS games? :dopefish:

Splitscreen / coop > Online.
This sums it up
I like coop a LOT better than competitive matches
And I like when games support system link and split screen than only online

Hasn't co-op been steadily increasing in FPS games as of late? Maybe I missed something or are you speaking strictly local co-op?

It should be in more games.
I think it is increasing, but developers are not focusing on it.
I really wanted to see Kane and Lynch have that. I don't remember what happened, but i think it got dropped.

I agree that it should feature more, in all types of games, especially with the move towards widescreen ratios that makes it easier to play vertical splitscreen. PC gaming would be a lot more social if it didn't consist of a mate coming round and the two of you having to take turns at playing something. Developers seem to think we all enjoy and have the means to play online, so they focus on their online multiplayer (with or without co-op), but the truth is that a lot of people still don't have good broadband speeds and would prefer to be in the same room as their teammates anyway.

Yeah, I know I don't want to play split screen on my computer monitor.
You guys are silly.
Several games have coop now, you just have to look for it and be prepared for your friend to need his own computer.

i like co-op games, you don't get insulted for noob or other things when playing with someone you know... and shoot NPCs, its more relaxed...

Too many games are focusing on coop and nerfing the single player experience though seemingly now. While I do enjoy coop, I hate the fact that it's coming to such a forefront now. It was fine back in the DOS days where it was a bonus. Some games just shove it down your throat. Some being Gears basically.

In 2001 everyone said the same things about multiplayer, like Counter-Strike, and just plain being giant, like GTA3.

Deathmatch/VS > coop
don't get me wrong, coop is great, but it just does not give the thrill of a good DM game
that being said, in many cases the annoyance factor of finding a good DM game > than the fun

Co-op > Deathmatch, IMHO.
Lately, I've grown of tired of playing Deathmatch games. They're simply just not as fun as they used to be a while ago. In various single-player games, a different experience in storytelling is (hopefully) rewarded to the player, and makes it entertaining. But in multiplayer, its too obvious: A gets more kills than B and so forth. A little tiresome if you ask me.
Oh, and co-op has been making a bit of a comeback, but as someone else mentioned, it's been perhaps too much of a focus (e.g. Army of Two, Gears of War, RE5, etc.)
I feel like the desire to play coop comes in games that are not ment for it, like back in Half-Life1 and Jedi Knight. XD
