I find this to be pretty disgusting...

They try to pin video games on violence, than they go ahead and do something like this??

what do you guys think?

here is an example

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XkKF4ZcqW14

i fixed the link. i dunno how you guys havent seen these ads....

Link doesn't work. But yeah, you're not going to start off remote-piloting Predator drones. Recruiters will lie their asses off to you in order to fill their monthly quota of enlistees. (I remember that when I was age 18 to around 24, I had military recruiters calling me all the time.)

Because in reality, modern warfare does not resemble a video game, unless you're an officer or a technician far removed from the battlefield.

People honestly THINK that it will be like a video game? Are these people not taught History in school?

This. Thinking OP is Canadian and thinking he's referring to our Canadian Forces I'd like to see this ad. Being a member of the Forces myself

Being a soldier in the army with a video game mentality is definitely not a good idea IMO. Sure, a lot of guys with this mindset might feel alright when they're in the battlefield and get the job done, but afterwards they are most likely to be left psychologically damaged when they think back on some of the things they just did and the attitude they had whilst doing those things.

I'm sorry, but a few loony people in congress doesn't account for the whole government. This is especially true when you look at the armed forces. They are very far removed from congress in the way they operate and advertise. The armed forces have never said anything about games making people into killers and have in fact been a big proponent of using game technology in training.

None (well aside from the totalitarian ones)... having different political parties with different viewpoints is, like, one of the foundations of a democracy.

MegaMustaine's right. The Air Force uses "video games" as training simulators. Hell the military has even come forth with using an Ipod App as a utility out in the field for snipers. The Army's commercial you link is their attempt to recruit people that wouldn't otherwise think about joining. Who wants to join knowing where they're going and possibly getting shot or even killed? Modern Warfare ha ha ha...yeah.

Is it wrong they use a video game? Maybe, maybe not. Honestly I don't see anything wrong with it. For you to say though that the military is saying that video games cause violence and blame it for making people into killers..that's wrong. Sure the government is a whole but each section thinks for itself.

Tetsuro

I think your average game is a little smarter than that.

Hmm, a line in the commercial says "In the United States army, you'll find out what you're really made of". I'm sure those gamers already know; they're made of flesh and blood that ultimately damages really easy.

Also, real life has no respawns.

Except for that one guy.

That was actually Chuck norris who gave that guy is life back. When he passes gas, he can kill or grant life to those who deserve it.

I like the Marine Corp commericals but I wouldn't have joined because of them. Honestlly its the recruiters that bring in people. I joined the Marines cause my recruiter came to my old target job and promised me that I would become a "badass" haha.

You have but a few fringe politicians who try and get video games regulated. Also, the majority of people who join the armed forces will never see combat. On top of that, you cannot attack the military's advertising unless you want to attack all of advertising. Most advertising is misleading, and this is going to be true with the military's as well. Hell I would say that McDonalds' advertising kills way more people a year than all of the armed forces ads combined. It is up to the citizen to determine what makes sense and what doesn't. If the Army can convince some dumbass that being in the infantry in the Army is just like playing MW2 then more power to them. It is called Darwinism.

Whats the problem with this? Seems like a legit marketing campaign to find some young red blooded soldiers to clean up this shithole we call earth. I dont know if you been around but there is some serious problems out there that require some ass whipping. Someday soon we wont need a big military but today there is just far too many opinions out there and these opinions are armed and will kill you if they had the chance.

No Marines lead the way :)

If I were to make a Marine Corp commercial it would be targeted towards gangsters. "The streets were you grew up is part of a bigger picture. Defend a nation and not just a street. United States Marines" Hoorah :).

Because, well, I dunno.. maybe the fact that real combat is absolutely nothing like video games?

Well... No shit. But they arent actually saying it IS. In fact thei overall message is. "You're actually worthless as you are, we're gonna change you into something completely different." Hence "See what you're really made of."

They're tagetting those that have an interest in the military more than anything.
