Saw something this morning and decided to post it here, then realized we didn't already have an Olympics thread, so I'm doing that too.

Anyway... found this pretty funny and sad... an Olympic snowboarder essentially complaining that science is too unstylish. http://sports.yahoo.com/olympics/vancouver/blog/fourth_place_medal/post/Nate-Holland-thinks-your-pants-are-too-tight?urn=oly,219715

How about that poor schmuck that wiped out on the bob sled? That would suck hard, Im sure that is going to change the sport big time. I feel sorry for his family who watched that poor guy fly off the track.

I think if he was doing the Skeleton he would have died instantly.

I personally think its been overlooked as a sefty hazard instead of a design flaw.

He didnt die in vain considering he died doing what he loved.

It's kinda funny to to read the time tables where DNF means Did Not Finish... http://forums.3drealms.com/vb/images/icons/smirk.gif

Thing about Vancouver is, it doesn't really snow a lot there. Nor does it get really cold. It's mostly rainy a lot of the time. Can't really see an Olympic Games being hosted there.

Back in 1988 it was hosted here in Calgary, but again, here, it's a good place to host the Olympics because it's cold during the winter, as well as it snows a lot. They usually don't have to break out the man made snow making machines.

I thought the surrounding mountains boasted almost year-round skiing?

Not sure, but the greater Vancouver area is usually damp most of the year. They don't usually get a lot of snow there. That could have something to do with what happened to that guy. Not enough snow on the luge track? Some people thought it was pretty unsafe.

It was pretty stunning how the USA defeated Canada in their own game ( hockey, of course)

It was actually Canada that won the gold, setting a new record for most gold medals by a host country. Old record was 13 I believe.

I got onto one of those "live blogs" talking about the Canada v. America hockey game about five seconds before Canada scored the winning goal. My hope at least got crushed fast.

I guess after winning at Hockey, Canada figured there was no possible way they could make themselves look foolish anymore... I mean... wow... I didn't get to see much of the closing ceremonies, but it looks like they stopped trying to get rid of stereotypes around the point that they had lumberjacks carting giant beaver and moose balloons around while mounties danced to banjo music.
