Before, I had the directx 8.0 and this it worked perfectly.
When I try to load the game he gives me the following error:
"Max Payne requires a DirectX 8 compatible display adapter. Please
consult the troubleshooting readme in the installation folder".
As I can execute MAXPAYNE with the directx 8.1?
Is there some patch to make it work?
I have a Voodoo 3.
Thank you.

I have the same problem. Running Win XP(DirectX 8.1) and have the "made for XP" driver for my ATI 128 Rage card and updated Win XP drivers for my intel 440bx chip set. Have the latest Max Payne update. Still nothing....same error when trying to exe. Please HELP!

Same problem. demo ran with DirectX8.1, until I downloaded DCOM98vl.3 from MS to fix a problem caused by WebHancer(on shutdown, error message "WIN95 RPC wmsg windows") maybe it has caused other problems.
Bought full game, won't work.
Demo & full game work on another computer running DirectX8.0.
First computer has an ASUS V7700 deluxe card.
Using DirectX diagnostics shows that Direct Draw
Accel., Direct3D Accel., AGP Texture Accel. are all listed as NOT AVAILABLE. This would seem to be the problem, what's the solution???
Updating drivers, reinstalling DX8.1,etc does not fix the problem.
On the 2nd computer all 3 are available.
Running Win98 on both.

DirectX 8.1 itself is not the problem. I ran 8.1 on my WinME machine with no problems, and my Windows XP machine which also comes with 8.1 both have no problem with the game.

thats exactly what I did..execpt I needed it for Windowblinds. Now Max won´t start. Is this something we can agree on being the cause? Hmm..well if it is.. has anybody a solution or any idea why this is happening?
thanks

I have a similar error message to yall's but mine's longer. and the error message comes up right after the intro movie is over.
"An error has occured in the graphics engine. try to downgrade your screenmode and/or other settings by pressing the 'options' button in max payne startup dialog. MAX PAYNE REQUIRES A DIRECTX 8 COMPATIBLE DISPLAY ADAPTER. PLEASE CONSULT THE TROUBLESHOOTING README IN THE INSTALLATION FOLDER.
Error: failed to validate material"
Thats what it says. and im running it with a brand new computer:1.5 GHz, 512ram, 16 mb NVIDIA video card, diectX 8.1, windows XP...
whats the deal here?

Watson: there is a problem with VoodooIII and
DirectX8.1. I recommend a new graphic card.
I'm now using an ATI -- no problems anymore.

First post, We don't support running Voodoo2/3 based cards for Windows XP...
Second post, we really can't help you if updating your system to DirectX 8.1 broke your D3D Acceleration. Please try to downgrade your system to older drivers which were still known to work.

Well, I suggest going to http://www.directxbuster.de/index_e.html and using their directx uninstaller. Then reinstall DX8.0a. I have the same problem and went out searching for a way to solve it...this seems the only way to fix it until something else is done about it. Hope this helps.
