mp keeps coming up with this long video error right after the intro movie

ok... i have successfully installed mp and i have the latest directX 8.1 because i have windows xp and xp comes with DirectX 8.1! so that cant be the problem! but the error says: "An error has occured in the graphics engine. try to downgrade your screenmode and/or other settings by pressing the 'options' button in max payne startup dialog. max payne requires a directX 8 compatible dispay adapter. please consult the troubleshooting readme in the installation folder.
Error: failed to validate material"

Thats what it says... and that happens right after the intro movie ends. and i have done everything that its told me to do. like: consulting the troubleshoot AND going to the online support, configuring the settings in the startup dialog, checking to see if my directX 8 thing works and i tested it and it works fine! and might i add that i got this game when i had another computer that had windows 98 and it worked fine on that computer. but now with this new computer, that has windows xp and a 16mb video card(which the old computer had a 16mb card too!), 512mb sdRAM, 1.5 ghz processor. please help me here.

16MB Video card won't cut it with WindowsXP, you need at least 32MB. I'm running 64MB DDR on a GeForce2 Pro and it's very sweet.

Your video drivers are not directX8.1 compatible.

You need to update your drivers.
