I like many had a number of problems to get the game running and at times to keep it running. My system is on the low end of meeting the stated requirements. Try the following:
1. Start over and reload the game and patch. This will not affect any saves. At the first menu go into options. Leave all on the low settings. On the rigth side disable "fogging" and set "screen buffers" to the lowest setting. This solved my problem of the background being black and really couldn't see much. Your save will still appear black but the game should be different.
2. I've locked up a few times. My solution has been to exit the game, actually had to reboot. At the first option menu disable "sound". Load the save before the lock up. Play past the problem. Save and again exit the game. On your way in enable "sound" and you should be ok.
I'm not saying this will solve everyone's problems but is easy and cheap... but new cards or machine is in the near future as games demand more memory. Hope this helps.
