Choppy game play

Hey all, the problem is...as you play, every second or so, the game chokes up, and sounds may repeat. This isnt a problem with graphics or sound because I have tried every possible solution posted anywhere and tried at all resolution settings (hardware and software) and nothing helps. The problem may lie with memory somewhere...because, when I first load up Max and start a saved game, it runs o.k. with only a few freezes/skips, then as time runs on it gets progressively worse. By the end of my tolerance it is extremely chopy and freezes every other step that max takes, and is totally un-playable. Anyone else experience this or have a fix?
