I have a stupid problem. I am aware that some of the first Max Payne Cd's had this problem, where it was impossible to install because you always got the missing data cab file. I am getting this error now...however, I have installed WITH THIS DISK in the past. I bought Max the first week it came out, installed it, and played it the whole way through with no problems at all. Since then, the disk has sat in it's case, but a few weeks ago, I bought a new processor and video card, and did a fresh format and reinstall of windows. Well, when I tried to reinstall Max Payne, it brought up this error. I don't get it. The disk worked before...it just doesn't work now. Any suggestions?

Try copying all the CD contents to a folder on your harddrive, then installing it from the folder.

That didn't work, but I emailed tech support, and not only did they email me back within 24 hours, but it wasn't just a blow off "We are working on the problem now" email. It was at least two pages long, and was written by an actual person, with real question pertaining to me and my system. I was f***ing blown away. I have never recieved that type of support on ANY product with no hassle in my life. I had to answer all of thier questions and respond (Which I have already done), but even if they can't fix the problem, I am impressed already...just from the effort.

Thanks for your suggestion though, SnLnc. I appreciate it.

The data3.cab file problem exists with several games. There is NO such file as data3.cab, it's just an errormessage given by the installationsoftware when the datatransfer from your cdrom-drive drops below 100b/s.
The main two reasons the datatransfer drops that low are:
1- Your CD-rom is dirty (the computer can't read the cd-rom good enough at some points)if this is the case all you have to do is to clean the damn thing.
2- Your cd-rom is damaged so go back to the store you bought it from and get a new one.

I hope this works.

I had the same problem when i had Windows ME.
I upgraded to Win XP and now it says:

Component Transfer Error

Component: Program
File group: Program Excutable files
File: D:\disk1\data2.cab
Error: Data error (cyclic redundancy check)

Data error (cyclic redundancy check)
Probably that CD is ****ed up, but... one question... Is that a pirated copy?
U can try to copy it to a CD-R, who knows.
good luck

cyclic redundancy check < if this occurs, try checking your CD for scratches, as this normally happens when your cd is dirty or buggered!
