One can only hope. A complete revamp is about the only thing that would get my interest in this one up.

I'm just... this game shouldn't happen at all.
At the end of Max Payne 2 Max had brought everything full circle. He was at peace, he was finally okay with the death of his wife...

Bringing him back now seems almost insulting in a way.

To me, this isn't and will never be Max Payne 3. Sure those new to the series will pick it up, maybe even like it, but give them the first two to play and the first thing that will be uttered is "this isn't Max Payne!" (them having played Max Payne 3 first once its eventually released).

I still have the thought to order a book from Amazon about detective film noir and send it to Rockstar with the following note attached: "HINT!". Just an idea. ;)

Yeah, I was pretty pissed and heartbroken when I saw that Max Payne 3 looked like a trashy GTA than it did a film noir game. Honestly, I don't care if it ever gets released. In the state that its in right now, its an affront to the Max Payne name.

Now that Remedy is done with Alan Wake, T2 should aproach Remedy and ask nicely to develope Max Payne 3. I believe, they might be secretly working on AW 2, though.

Hope they are totally re-doing it, in real MP style, and not hanging it out to dry.

Remedy should be making this game, they created and wrote everything from the beginning of Max Payne, no on else knows it like them, no one else will do it right.

The story should happen shortly after the events of Max Payne II, while Max is still young, and it should definitely take place in the irreplaceable New York City in that unique gritty Max Payne noir style graphic novel story telling method, which is so great. :)

And also they should make sure the same people from the first 2 games do all the voices for any character that also appears in Max Payne III, and I hope there are several. :)

I'm hoping they completely remake the game as well. It looks more like a generic TPS based on the Brazil levels from Modern Warfare 2 than a real Max Payne game.

How can you say this and seem to be really positive about Prey 2? Max Payne 3 is taking the mechanics and formula of Max Payne and moving it to a different setting. It looks to be Max Payne set in Brazil. Prey 2 seems to have nothing in common with Prey. Prey 2 doesn't share any of the mechanics from the original Prey and even drops the main character yet you have a much more positive outlook for the game when compared to MP3. Why?

Well, I do agree with Zulie... Rockstar sucks.
But, continuing Max's story after him being at peace at the end of the second game.... making him an alcoholic and painkiller addict... it's a kick in the nuts to the ending of the second game.

Also, PREY 2 is being made by Human Head... the same guys that made the first game.
Max Payne 3 is being made by the studio that ported the first two games to the consoles. That poorly ported them to the consoles.
So... lets see... Remedy not developing... 3DRealms not producing.... Sam Lake not writing the story, yeah... fail.
So, it's easier to be excited about PREY 2 because the universe is so open and huge and has a ton of possibilities. Max Payne is pretty set, changing that so drastically as they've done (regen health, a cover system, three weapon limit, Max is no longer a cop, left NYC for Brazil... large portions of the game take place in the day...)... it's extremely difficult to swallow just because Rockstar say it's awesome.

Specially since they hold zero credit with me.

dan2091

Also, R* Toronto is involved, the guys that ported GTA IV to the PC.

By the way, DA, I thought I read there was no ren health, maybe I'm wrong.

-----

Up to now, the game sounds good to me. I still hate them for having Max's head shaved (hate that trend) and for not waiting Remedy to do the third one, it sure would have been different.

But by the comments of the enviroments and the attention to the detail, it sounds good. Also, this picture (http://media.rockstarwatch.net/news/4236790581.jpg) gives me hope that they'll give us an explanation to Max's situation. Probably he's an alcoholic not because of his wife or Mona, but maybe because of some problems he had afterwards, who knows??? I don't :p.

Damien_Azreal

The last article I read didn't touch on health. But, the original announcement did say the game would use regen health.
As for the picture you list, the game will go from past to present constantly throughout the campaign. Detailing Max's life over the past eight years....
Which, I think it a horrible move. There's no need or reason to jump around chronologically. And given Rockstar's "story telling" skills.... I'm not sure they can even pull it off.

As for Remedy, latest rumors have them gearing up for Alan Wake 2. God I hope it's true...

You didnt play Red Dead Redemption, did you?

dan2091
04-06-2011, 03:07 AM
Okay.. I haven't played RDR by the way, and still support Rockstar vision of the series. People's problem should not be based on putting this game in contrast with some other Rockstar Game. It should be because of the changes to the formula Rockstar has proposed. But hey! As mean as this changes are, people shouldn't rule out the game!

Jumping from back to present repeatedly, mm? Abrupt time-switching? That doesn't sound good to me, unless they're fooking masters at story-telling and know what they're doing. And I hope they know what they're doing, because besides that quote from the article, it sounds this could be the best thing to apply at a non-linear story when you want to focus on character development.

Sure, Max Payne and Max Payne 2 used this but only at the beginning of each game. So you're like wtf, what is that guy doing in the top of the building, only way to find out? Play through 8 hours to the end, and then you're like uhhh, alright I got it.

So, what's wrong with using this technique the way Rockstar claims they're doing it? This sounds more attractive than a linear-written game. Seriously, starting as a full-haired Max Payne, chronologically continuing it's story: there's no mistery in that! Non-linear? Show me some twisted twist, f*ck yeah! Revealing an aspect of the character from flashbacks that will make people switch their perception of the protragonits... and there you got the Noir everyone thing that is missing. There are many ways to achieve freaking Noooiiiir... And judging by the elapsing time of the story, which might or might not be 8 years, this could be a more elegant way to show it off.

As for this being a slap to the character.. Say, for example, a random guy is happy with his wife after having trouble marrying her, but now he comfronts job/marital/health problems? It's the same with Max: his psychological problem may not be because of his lost ones, but because of something else. The Comedian in Watchmen was depressed because of the secret he found out. Seeing how Max has used conspiracy as a theme in previous games, there's chance he's crazy nuts because of something he knows but tries to forget? Are we getting way too far from what the original Max Payne character is? Not much, the way I see it. The setting and secondary characters may be differents but they surround Max, Max himself doesn't need to be different. At least not from what's been seen so far. This could complement Max's character arc, nevertheless.

Max 1/2 story-arc may be over, but putting the character in a different situation has nothing wrong with it. Well, at least if he doesn't have that many drastical changes (some looses a hand, or a leg; but oh Rockstar, why did Max had to loose his hair?)

There are many ways to live up this title but at the same time there are many to make it fail as well. In a world where being negative is the most common thing to do, I prefer to hope this game will be enjoyable at best, and have a descent story.

Red Dead Redemption is overrated.

It's the boring GTA4 formula in the Wild West. That keeps it interesting for a few hours, and then, back the the same snoozefest that GTA4 was.

The first 2 max payne games did have some kind of time jumping didnt they. Both of them, at the beggining actually. The entire idea of the game jumping forward and back does sound interesting, and cleared up some doubts on this game. I know get that, max payne won't be fat and bald all the time, there'll be different time periods we'll have to play him as. That sounds interesting. Instead of one big flashback, it'll be timewarping all over the place.

No, I haven't. And I find it extremely difficult to get myself interested in playing it considering how lackluster R*'s previous titles have been.

And going by people telling me it's awesome... that's what got me to buy GTA4. Which ended in boring tedium and disappointment.

Glad I bought it used. I hate buying used, but I hate giving Rockstar my money.

GTA4's formula is boring. Because you can jump around missions, it also makes the pacing bleh. If it was Mafia's story progression, I may have enjoyed it more. However, it was just GTA4 in the washed out west. I played it on PS3.

The new ‘flash back moments’ look like they’ve been shoehorned in to appease fans who weren’t happy with the look.

Kind of feel the same about this as I do about Prey 2, it may turn out to be an ok action game, but CHANGE THE TITLE!

You don’t need to drag a good series name through the dirt to promote your game. I don’t remember Bioshock calling itself System Shock 3 to gain extra exposure.

You know this is the decision of some twat marketing guy who has never played a game in his life.

Yes, but then they dropped that even though no gamers picked up on that.

But "spiritual" doesn't mean "direct."

See Dragon Age: Origins. It was billed as a Balder's Gate spiritual successor. And that's what it was, instead of Balder's Gate 3.

I'm talking about their entire catalog except three games. Out of Rockstar's catalog I like GTA3, Vice City and Manhunt.
Everything else... is either boring, dull, annoying, pathetic... flawed...
And I strongly disagree with Rockstar being good at telling a story. They are nowhere near Remedy's story telling abilities...

So, now, bringing him back is awesome.

But, modeling Max after him visually... ehhh. So, this makes the third different person Max has been modeled after. Why not just take Max from the second game... and make him older?

If they are modeling Max after McCaffrey it might have something to do with the game using the L.A. Noire facial animation system. I almost guarantee they are using it for the game. On an ironic note, Remedy says they can do facial animation better.

Yes, some games turn out to be terrible, despite looking good on trailer, like Alone in the Dark. So yeah. Yeah.. well, That's a Team Bondi developed game, anyway. Rockstar is publishing it, only. So there's chance that Rockstar put zero input on L.A. Noire story, I don't know really. That doesn't mean that the Max Payne 3 story has to suck, anyway. I hope it works out.

Timothy Gibbs is a "real" actor as well. And Timothy looked great as Max, I'd prefer that they maintain some continuity instead of jumping to yet another different "face" for Max.

Yeah, he's an actor, too. See, I'm against changing actors when a series is going on, too. I wish Michael Keaton along with the first two Batman movies' staff had came back in the 90's to do Batman 3, with a better script than Batman Returns (and Forever :s)... But, oh time awarded us with better Batman movies. Still, I like Keaton the most.

Anyway, they've chosen this guy to fully portray Payne and I don't oppose the situation. Yes, they're changing lots of things, the main model actor being one of them. So what? I'll ony bash Rockstar Games if this decision isn't well implemented, cause the way I see it, this is not a bad decision at all.

And just like Batman, I feel Sammy Lake is the best Payne model, an icon I'd say. And that said, there's no reason to not get different actors to do the role. Of course, if he was back as Payne and the writer, it would be an awwesome choice.

---

How awesome is, too, that Payne is using hawaiian shirts, like Sam in the very first MP, in this come back :)?

I've checked out the article, and honestly, it sounds promising. I don't know if it's been mentioned here before, but they are using Euphoria in the game, so Max (and other characters) will anticipate the landing from shoot dodges and try to catch himself, etc. We're also going to find out why Max had to leave New York, through animated comic scenes and Max's narration. The article also says that the noir style is still apparent and that it works in the new location.

You guys can continue talking about how Max is being butchered...I'll be staying optimistic and (hopefully) enjoying the game when it comes out :)

Satisfaction suffers if on my first play through I beat the game in less time than it takes to a watch Lord of the Rings movie.

I bought MP2 when it was a $50 game at release. Given MP2's short length I felt as though I paid $30-$40 to much.

It's stupid to have Max be older in the game, it should take place shortly after Max Payne II, and he should still have has his hair. Plus, there's just no substitute for New York City, certainly not some third world cesspool. Some place like France might be interesting, if another city must be shown.

But at the very least Max should still be young, jumping so far ahead is crazy. Many fans want more Max Payne games, beyond this one (and hopefully made by Remedy), jumping so far ahead in time limits future story options. They should simply adjust the story and art to make Max look the same age as in Max Payne II, that would solve that problem.

SpinX

I think I know why they switched actors to portray Max. I believe that R* is using the LA Noire facial animation tech in this game. It would make sense for them to implement it in MP3 and all of their future games if they can afford to pay the actors. The tech itself is highly dependent on actors and with them not wanting to switch voice actors for Max, it makes sense that McCaffery will be who Max is modeled after.

This. How this journey will be significant, emocionally speaking, to Max; this is what I want to see.

When the music theme first played, it was awesome, with the sun over the city, hitting the skyscrappers. But I do agree the music theme was out of place at the end of the trailer.

What I found funny was the guy talking to Max at the beginning. It so much reminds me of a post (http://forums.3drealms.com/vb/showpost.php?p=846396&postcount=104) made by Sang:

From the former already linked Game Informer Preview..

I see one of the subtle new features – a slow motion, controllable bullet’s-eye view of the last kill in an area. Minus the controllableness of it that's not really a subtle new feature, it's just an expansion on what was done with the Sniper kills.

Destructoid Preview (http://www.destructoid.com/max-payne-3-is-everything-i-hoped-for-and-more-212817.phtml)

If there's one thing I can see that will bother players, it will be the constant switches from cutscene to gameplay. Right about that.

It also helps that there are no load times from the start to finish of the game. So no traditional "levels" at all? I always loved the level i.d. illustrations/artwork that showed up before each shoot out. :(

At least they got the painkillers back and didn't ruin that with health regen!

EDIT: Thanks for that Rock Paper Shotgun link, i think that's the best preview article I've read so far.

From that Rock Paper Shotgun preview...

It’s clear that the shooting has retained the original games’ unique sense of twitchy danger, the presentation just dialled up to hyperactive modern standards. Cover and chest high walls are present but could evidently be easily ignored. Max’s hardboiled narration is there, bullet time is definitely making its presence known and Max is just as messed up as ever. The weapon restrictions is a concern, but from what I’ve seen even in sunny Brazil Max Payne is still Max Payne. Rockstar have, more than anything, managed to get the feel of Max’s grumpy gunplay right, and they didn’t even have to eat the flesh of any fallen angels to do so.

Makes me feel good :) I'm excited for March.

Max Payne is all about an adult way of unfolding the story of a game. Definatly not holding my breath the way the market is heading, but I do hold on to that 1% of hope.

And im not saying a lot of games had an adult way about them erlier years either, but back then there was atleast room for it. Now a days it seems impossible to produce an AAA-game with even a tiny sense of style. Suppose games like uncharted is the exceptions, but thats because a game like that is trying to be a fast paced action movie anyway, so you´ll catch the whole crowd with the formula anyway.

Im not all old and grumpy though; im starting to look forward to the next phase of gaming, because I think there will once again be room for artistic focus and attention to detail in the future. I just seriously doubt Max Payne 3 will even try to go for it.

Just read a preview for this in Edge, and although I’m still skeptical about Rockstar creating the same sort of atmosphere, the gameplay itself sounded fun. what do you guys think of the Special Edition? I'm more intersted on the physical extras than the in-game ones. Would have rather had an artbook than MP skins.

The problem to me is the price. The first and last time I payed more than $90 for a Special Edition, I later blamed myself for not waiting till price droped (cough cough DNF cough).

thelastdisciple
11-22-2011, 11:37 PM
The only special edition of any game i have ever bought was for Bioshock 2, and this is when it's price dropped from about $100 to $30, talk about a steal! It came with the vinyl record of the OST, a CD OST, a hardcover art book and some posters and in a nifty box no less. I find it incredibly expensive alone for just the normal editions of games these days, let alone buying some godly edition.

I guess if you split everything up for the Payne LE, you're already paying 60 for the game alone... so add in another 10 for the soundtrack, maybe 8 for the key chain and 17-20 for the figurine. It all adds up, certainly looks nice but i probably won't be getting it.

Also, in the past... i was comfortable just paying the 40 dollars for the original Max Payne and getting a cool mouse pad as an added bonus.

dan2091
11-23-2011, 08:57 AM
Cool mousepad was excellent, and the Max Payne 2's folder-esque box was sexy, too. I'm not really fond of dvd retail boxes :(.

So, last time Rockstar brought a Special Edition, was when GTAIV came out, does anyone remember if they first said it was gonna have a limited run or something? Cause, they're still selling it up to this day.

Best one so far. The goon getting lit up at 2:20 is classic.

I can easily say... I absolutely hate how they are doing the "graphic novel" scenes. Hate it.

Yeah, have to agree. I was hoping they'd go for the sketchy comic strip look of the first two.

What I'm trying to understand is the '35 GB' hard drive space required. That just doesn't make any sense to me.
The rest of the requirements also look off.
The minimum specs looks fine, gives the players a good idea of the bottom line of what's needed to play the game.

But the top end... it just looks like they picked the absolute top end hardware and listed it. That doesn't provide any solid information.
Any game could run on hardware like that. The recommended requirements need to specify what is needed to run the game, not list super, mega, badass PC that could run anything.

I mean, how do you go from a 8600 to a 680? There's a ton of generations of cards in that gap.

I've heard that the 35Gb of space is for some ultra high resolution texture pack.

That would be nice, but from what I've seen in the previews it looks really nice as is. :)

Has GFWL or Rockstar Social club been mentioned? :mryuck:

The STEAM version of the game will use STEAMworks for some functions. But will also use Rockstar Social Club as well.

You'd think they'd have learnt from GTA 4 that having multiple accounts to play one game is going to put people off.

That's like saying Ubisoft learned people don't want their "always online" DRM service. ;) Very few publishers actually "learn" anything.

It's sad that Remedy wasn't allowed to make the game. In fact, we probably could have had two more Max Payne games by now if they would have just been allowed to keep going after Max Payne II. And the style, atmosphere, story and feel of the game would have been true to Max Payne. Well, maybe after this Remedy will get to make the next game :)

It's not that Remedy weren't allowed to make, they decided not to make another one. They wanted to work on something new, and by that... Alan Wake.
But even after MP3 comes out, I wouldn't expect Remedy to jump on MP4. They are still invested with Alan Wake and who knows what else they could want to try in the future.

Some people from Remedy have said they felt the story was pretty complete with the ending of Max Payne 2.

Hmm, I seem to recall they were willing to work on the next one, but rockstar declined. Seems pretty stupid to buy the rights to the game, then release no sequel for 8 years...

In any case, no one else will make a Max Payne game like Remedy will, they have that unique style and atmosphere to the game and story, and hopefully they will make the next one. The Alan Wake sequel can wait. :)

By the way, anyone know a site that has this screen shot available in higher res than 1280x720 (preferably with small logo like this or no logo, and no 3d effect applied like rockstar seems to have done to all the wallpapers on their site, grr...)?
