View Full Version : Max Payne Problem with WinXP and GeForce 3

I have a state of the art computer from the fine folks at Alienware. Pentium 4, GeForce3, 384 megs of ram, WinXp, SBLive 5.1 Gamer and the list goes on.

I just upgraded to XP, fresh install with a hardrive reformat. I loaded up Max Payne to get some time logged in with the holiday season and stuff only to discover that the game crashes to desktop quickly and withour warning whenever I try to get in the game or load a level.

There is no error message. Just a quick and fast exit to desktop.

I have the latest drivers (though I just reverted to an earlier nVidia detonator set because I didn't like how the latest affected my computer) for every component and XP is up to date as far as windows updates and Direct X goes.

Anyone have any idea on how to fix this?

Thanks and peace

instead of showing off your box, maybe you should've installed the latest patch.

btw, you might want to dump xp and go with win2k instead. smaller footprint and 2 service packs.

The 1.02 patch? That was the first thing I did when I installed the game. I was only reinstalling the game after the WinXp upgrade. I'm not that big of a newbie images/icons/smile.gif Dub

I have almost the exact same system specs and had the same problem with Win XP. I installed the patch and now it works great. You could try changing the resolution of the game, and also make sure you have the latest XP drivers from nvidia.com, Hope this helps

I have the latest drivers for every part of my system. Check 'em today. I have the 1.02 patch installed couresty of Fileplanet.com.

Still crashes, tried changing resolution and detail mode but it still crashes.

Hi have a Geforce 3 also and I have the same problem. I don't think it's the sound card or Win XP. I have win 98 with a hercules Game Theather sound card.

It hangs whenever I go into a room and Max Payne starts to say something. ie. whenever there's an exclamation over his head. Otherwise everythings fine. I have 1.02 patch installed and NVidia 2311. Somehow I think that turning the sound off while running the game and turning it on after the parts over just doesn't "cut it". I'll be waiting <insert angry remarks here> for a patch that fixes this.

You could try changing you video card drivers. Crashing to desktop is a known issue with the newest 23.11 Detonators. Or you could try playing MP in Win98 compatibility mode.

Beings you have the NTFS file system this game will not run correctly. If
you wish to change your file format
from NTFS to Fat32 you would then need to contact Microsoft on this issue.
There are no plans to make a patch to address XP compatibility issues.

This is the response i got from talonsoft....

this is my reply

I would like to thank you fro your reply and due to your companies lack of
consideration for the end user will no longer be buying talonsoft products
as i have done in the past

so much for the customer is always right

cheers
