View Full Version : MP won't install/run on many CD-Rom Drives

Many people are posting that they either cannot install or run MP from their CD, DVD, or CD-RW drives. This is undoubtedly due to the copy protection that is being used on the MP CD. I started to post about this about two months ago when I started playing the MP demo. Ironically, I finally got the full version and I could not run the game either! Both my CD and CD-RW drive would install it but neither would play the game. Unfortunately, I had to use methods not approved by this forum to play my full retail version of the game.
I tried using the CD-ROM "slowdown" program found at www.cdspeed2000.com (http://www.cdspeed2000.com) to reduce the speed of my CD-RW but MP would not work then either. My burner is fairly new - a 12x from Lite-On. The only drive I found able to play the game so far was a Lite-On 16x DVD-ROM drive I installed in a friend's computer.
There is nothing about this in the MP Support FAQ because there is never a solution to this type of problem - except possibly a firmware upgrade to your CD-Rom drive.
I wish I had a solution to offer. Seems to me that the best bets are the newer DVD-ROM drives. And MP is not the first game to suffer from this problem.

There was a Safedisc Troubleshooting Guide (http://forums.3drealms.com/ubb/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic;f=20;t=000007) posted here some time ago. It originally came from another developer's website. Some ppl were able to get Max Payne running properly using those tips without having to bypass Safedisc.

I'm not sure if the installation troubles are caused by Safedisc, or by drives that can't handle 80 min / 700 meg CDs, but the runtime troubles are most likely Safedisc-related.
