View Full Version : Console versions of Max Payne 2
Hey people first post here so go easy on me for gods sake I was just wondering if anyone at 3DR or Remedy knows anything yet about console versions of MP2?
I'm pretty sure that by the time it comes out my PC will be pretty much obsolete and I recently got a Gamecube so I was wondering what the chances that MP2 would come out on GC? I know the original MP didnt make it as George Broussard said it didnt have enough memory (tell Factor 5 that) despite it having 40 MB (43 if you count the memory imbedded on the Flipper chip)- more then ps2. Maybe it was because of the childish image GC has myth?
Anyway seeing as Take 2 is now more open to GC (Smugglers Run, Conflict DS and Mafia are coming to GC) will GC also get MP along with Xbox and PS2? I dont see why it cant.
Thanks for your time guys and for gods sake hurry up with Duke Forever! images/icons/grin.gif

I think it should come out on all systems, PC and all 3 consoles. MP2 could be done on PS2 IMO, also theres alot you can do the increase space on the GC DVD's. They still hold 1.57 Gigs but Eternal Darkness is 8 gigs and that was compressed onto 1 GC disk. Even if you dont want to compress I have no problems with multiple disks.

that clears away all the doubts......
I wouldn't put my bet on GameCube. Its structure is so different that porting Max Payne to GC would be very difficult.<font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">So your saying its actually easier on ps2? Thats new on me, no offence but have Remedy actually worked with the GC yet? I heard the same thing about Jedi Outcast but the producer says he actually prefers how the GC version is turning out over the xbox version.

Hey, while we're at it...let's port MP to the Super Nintendo! Why stop there, you say? Well, we don't have to! Let's put it on the Turbo Duo! And the 3DO! And... *gasp*...THE VIRTUAL BOY!
*laughing* Ahhhhh....well, maybe not. images/icons/grin.gif

porting Max Payne to GC would be very difficult. <font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">I thought one of the GameCube's selling points (from a developer's perspective), is that it's the easiest console to develop games for!?

So your saying its actually easier on ps2? Thats new on me, no offence but have Remedy actually worked with the GC yet?<font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">As a matter of fact, Remedy hasn't worked on any console conversions. The PS2 port was made by Rockstar Canada and the Xbox version by Neo.
All the plausible conversions were made. In other words, yes, PS2 was apparently easier than GC would have been, due to its processor and memory architecture and the structure of the game.

Well, SOME people in Remedy DID work on the consoles quite a lot...(we don't want to forget trips to Canada and Austria by our programmers, do we?)<font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">Indeed. Sorry. Some of our coders worked their arses off to get the ports done.
They also learned a thing or two about console conversions, which will probably make future conversions easier as we can take these things into account well in advance. Porting Max Payne was a bit tricky because it was originally developed solely with PC in mind.
I thought one of the GameCube's selling points (from a developer's perspective), is that it's the easiest console to develop games for!?<font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">Certainly, but developing a game directly for a console, and porting it from another platform, aren't the same thing.
On the surface it may seem simple (as they all do 3D graphics, what could be so difficult?) but beneath it things are different.
When developing for a console, you can take the console's memory and processor architecture into account and take maximum advantage out of it and opimize the game for it. However, once you've done that for one console, porting the game to another platform can be very tricky. All resources have to be modfied and most of the memory management and low-level graphics code re-written. If the structures differ too much (as in PC's and GC's case) the porting can be too difficult and take too long to be plausible.
Respectively, due to their similar structure, porting from PC to XBox was the easier conversion job of the two.

I understand what your saying. Porting it directly from PC would be difficult but rewriting it for GC would be easier then a direct port to ps2? It would certainly look better anyway. The GC's split memory can cause problems but not as many I'd imagine as ps2's dual processors? Like I said there are alot of PC games coming to GC such as Mafia and Jedi Outcast which I'd imagine have greater memory demands then the original Max Payne. Maybe you could give it to another developer to handle?
Sorry to sound like a walking advert for gamecube but I'd like to see you give GC a chance. images/icons/tongue.gif images/icons/smile.gif
ATARI MAX!
uhh.. does it still have bullet time?

^ I'm sure the 2600 automaticly gives it bullet time.
Maybe also flicker time graemlins/dopefish.gif

Sorry to sound like a walking advert for gamecube but I'd like to see you give GC a chance.<font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">But certainly. We don't have anything against a GameCube version - after all, it only means more sales.
However, re-writing a game is actually a much bigger project than porting it. It is up to the publisher whether they want to show a green light to a console re-write or not.
Remains to be seen how Jedi Outcast and Mafia will turn out on the GC. Are they confirmed?

Makes wonder if someone shouldn't try doing a Max Payne 2600 hoax. See link below:

^ That picture also has too many colours to be a Atari 2600 game, But I really wasn't going to say anything. It looks like it could be from the Atari 5200 though.
I was planing on making a fake Atari Max Payne box BTW images/icons/tongue.gif
Yes Jedi Outcast and Mafia are both confirmed for GC by LucasArts and Take 2 respectively. I agree it will be interesting to see how they turn out. They're going well from what I hear Illusion said they had just started the GC version before E3 while Jedi Outcast will be out for christmas. Its being done by Vicarious Visions
A nice addition is that both the GCN and Xbox versions will support progressive scan, helping to bring the already pretty Star Wars universe to life. The difference between the two versions is pretty minimal, though, as both draw on high quality textures and some nice lighting effects. In fact, Outcast's producer actually prefers the look of the GameCube version at this stage of development. Hopefully this remains true when everything is optimized in time for the title's release this November. <font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">http://cube.ign.com/articles/365/365835p2.html
You see a lot of developers are porting PC titles to GC quite easily. If Remedy or Rockstar dont want to Im sure lots of developers would love to try Max Payne for gamecube. images/icons/wink.gif
