i ve got a problem with my max editor. er maybe. well ive already made my level, but when i try to extract it, the little window pops up that says, "this program has performed an Illegal operation and will be shut down"
Ive sorta figured it out. lemme describe it.
I click export levelDB. Then the window says select lightmap size. i dont exactly know what size i should choose. my level is rather big. anyway, then the window says, choose combine logic. I choose "by material" and click ok. simple, it starts exporting, but when it gets to 'exporting static lights' it displays the "this program has performed an Illegal operation and will be shut down" and then it closes maxed. and unless i saved it before, i lose all my info i worked on.

try to export somthing else, if it works, you can kiss your level goodbye, if it don't. It's simply somthing wrong with maxed.

Hey hey hey no need to go that far yet. Obviously 1st you should check all your static lights, if u don't find a problem delete them and the try it.

Another thing you can try, is fixing all of your rooms by pressing " F " in transform mode. Try adjusting the tolerance so its .005 instead of .0005. I don't know if this will work with your problem, but has worked for me twice so far. But my errors were geometry related from complex booleans of half-spheres and elongated pentagons.

I'm just guessing, as I never had this problem, but check the statistics for every room you have and make sure that the box "cast no shadows" is NOT checked. Fixing, as Wook suggested, is always a good idea -- there may be 'holes' in your geometry through which light leaks out into worldspace (don't know if this really would generate an error, but worldspace should never be visible ingame). Check the properties of every static light you've set and look for anything strange there, I mean are any of the light's properties set differently compared to the other ones? Play around with the intensity of the static lights. Rerender your map and try to export then.

i tried fixing the rooms i set the tolerance to .00500 instead of .000500
no success

Try deleting some exits?

rather try deleting all of your static lights and then export it.
do you got an old backup of your map? if so you can check yourself, when the error exactly occurred, and figure out what causes it.

ya i tried deleting all my static lights...still screws up...oh well ill just abandon the project bc im working on another even better map, althought the level would be cool if it acutally worked.

the level is also cool cuz it has over 150 enemies...of course thats not the problem.

Even if it wasn't, that would've been your next problem.

I have sometimes the same error when I use dummy texture with DO. Check out if this true and try to move dummy texture to another one (e.g. ai_node_collision_nodraw).

As with many other errors we have all received in maxed these are all sometimes subjective to a corruption in the file that we can't fix. A suggestion I have that has worked for me on a few occasions (although rather lengthy and can cause a lock up if you are lacking sufficient memory) :

Select the entire level in F5 mode, Ctrl+C, open up a new level... materials->import materials from file->choose the said file... then after the materials have loaded, go in to F3 mode and Ctrl+V to paste your old level. Be patient, the level will not appear instantly, your computer will moan and groan, your hardrive will click, your mouse will stick as an hour glass, but give it a while.... depending on the size of your level and your system specs this operation could take a half an hour, and no matter how locked up you think your pc is, let it go, your level will eventually appear. Let me know if this fixes your problem.

Good Luck

I think I found a solution for ya. I was having the exact same problem. Download 3D Analyze v1.74 from here (http://www.tommti-systems.com/main-Dateien/files.html) . Then, start 3D Analyze. Under step 1, select the MaxEd application. Then, on the right column under "Direct X 8.1 Options," select under "Hardware Limits" emulate cube maps. Finally, click run.
