I know many of these things are already added in some message on this board, but here some of my ideas to add in MP2:

Fire weapons:
-Silenced pistol
-3round burst pistol (M93R)
-100bullet machinepistol (M950)
-Magnum colt
-Silenced MP5
-Bazooka
-Heavy machinegun (like a M60)
-Crossbow
-Minigun

Melee weapons:
-Knife
-Throwknife
-Sunstick
-Glfclub

Other weapons/items etc:
-C4 explosives

-Throw grenades (scrappel, teargas, flashbangs, smoke)

Gun attachments:
-silencers
-redlaser dots
-searchlights

Items:
-Zoomer, Thermo/Nightgoggles
-Gasmask, Body Armour

Enemies:
-Hummer witht heavy machinegun
-Motorcycles
-Rollerskaters (as seen in "black mask movie)

Sigh,

Ok, here's my opinion on your suggestions:

Hmm...silencers...personally I don't see the point. Max Payne's an all out action game; stealth aspects would only slow it down. The same goes for a quite a few of the weapons/gadgets you've listed.

I think the best aspect of the current game, is how well balanced the gameplay and the shootouts are. What makes it so enjoyable is the bullettime gameplay and the scenarios you're given to use it in.

There are so many pc games and mods that go for realisim, that the enjoyable elements of the game are lost. Personally, I can't stand it when you're offered 40 different sub-machine guns that all handle exactly the same way.

What would thermo/nv goggles add to the game? It's been done in so many games (mgs, perfect dark, rainbow six, etc), and it's not a novelty; it's an unessessary, and tedious feature. Who really enjoys being forced to switch to green or red filled screen, just to see enemies that were too badly textured in the first place?

Body armour could be more interesting, but then it takes the fun out of being able dodge bullets. There's no risk involved.

Combat knives have rarely ever been implemented well in 3rd person games. They suit fps games quite well; but in third person games, the camera is behind the player, so you can't see the action.

The gas mask is again another gadget that deters from the simplistic genius of the gameplay. It would mean tedious gas filled rooms which force the player to run about like a manic; instead of taking their time and playing it at their own pace.

I'm not saying the orignal is perfect, far from it. I thought the levels in part 1 very brilliant, but the other 2 episodes started to experiment with different gameplay elements. Platforms to jump on, and tripbombs to avoid just slowed the game down.

However, some of your idea are good. A stunbaton would definatly be fun to use, and a golfclub.

Now that is a good idea... images/icons/smile.gif

-Minugun<font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">Oh my no! The Minigun is a figment of first person games. It was alien to the first Hitman game. Turok handled it ok, but the sound was suxx.

Odd, those are the only two games I know of that actually have some sort of Minigun. Ok, I must rephrase. Miniguns are figments of n00b mods.

It may be. A Minigun in Max Payne certainly isn't his best anything.

What I would like to see is something that is more pleasing to the eye in bullet time. This is kind of hard to explain but, if anyone has a better way of describing in it please chime in at any time.

I would like to see a more gradual and graceful entrance and exit with bullet time. With the first Max Payne you would see a flash and bam time would be already set a certain speed. Get rid of the flash and have time gradually slow down to whatever speed it needs to be. Plus I would like to be able to see the bullets better, I'm not sure how you would do it. Don't try to do the bullet trails unless it actually alters the surroundings like a visual change. Not like those mods that have the concentric rings, thats kinda lame.

Also, if they plan to do the graphic novel thing again. Instead make the engine have enough quality that you can run the cutscenes straight from that. Going back and forth from the novel to the game got kind of tedious after a while.

Basically I would like the bullet time experience to be more in depth and detailed. Maybe hold out the bullet time a little longer.

A golf club? That would be cool! Max could be like Casey Jones in the TMNT movie....only not surrounded by ninjas.

...... Unless they put ninjas in MP2. images/icons/grin.gif

I wish they would put the TMNT's in Max Payne 2.. that would be cool!!

Odd, those are the only two games I know of that actually have some sort of Minigun <font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">Perfect Dark had the mother of all miniguns - It was called the Reaper. Think of a minigun with a with three bladed fan. Rounds were fired from the blades at a rate of 1800 rpm. If you ran out of ammo, you could chase people down corridors, and cut people up - lawnmower style.

Here's a picture, doesn't really give it justice, but anyway:

http://www.pd64.com/arsenal/all/reaper2.jpg

something that is more pleasing to the eye in bullet time. This is kind of hard to explain <font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">Basically, you want it to look like the Matrix; with transparent bulletime waves that distort the background, etc. Have a look at the lobby scene in the 3D Mark 2001 SE test - it uses the Max Payne engine.

This bloke looks awfully familiar...

http://www.boomspeed.com/hallier/madonion.jpg

The gradual bullettime can be done by the way. There's a line in the bullettime code which states what speed you want it to drop down to, and how long you want it to take to get to that speed. If you want I'll e-mail you a mod that changes it.

However, after a lot of testing, Remedy probably decided that the current speed setting was the most playable and useful.

about the bullettime waves, realtime light refraction might be pretty hardware consuming.
i would use that effect with pistols only, it wouldn't look good with machine guns anyway

Remedy had an easy job with the graphic novels. Because when I tell my story I have to actually make every god damn place I want to tell something from. Quite annoying, e.g. for my intro I have to make around 3-4 different places, JUST for the intro...

To an extent, I feel that the graphic novels were a quick way to avoid having to script complicated cutscenes in MaxEd. However, they add a nice touch to the game, and fit in well with film noir style of the story.

Has anyone hadd a go at making custom graphic novels? I have, and it kind of worked... I used a paint program called The Gimp (http://www.gimp.org/) to make my screenshots look like the comic/art graphic novels.

There are two options, benchmark, and demo. The lobby is the third benchmark test, and also a full sequence is shown (with bullet waves, etc) at the end of the demo video.

Why do I know this? Because I must have seen this stupid demo over a hundred times. My new PC isn't working properly (as always) and we originally thought it was the graphics card...turned out to be XP, of course.

Argh! I hate the mad onion video! graemlins/hhg.gif

An M60 is a light machinegun. A heavy machinegun is a 50 caliber antiaircraft gun.

I'm sick of all of those guns.

Ninja
08-27-2002, 04:10 AM
If you wish to be technical, the Minimi is a light machine gun, the M60 (shudder) and the M240G are classed as medium machine guns, and the M2HB .50 BMG is a heavy machine gun.

Back on topic- I wonder if some of the 2001SE benchmark features (yes, I know this has been brought up before) that aren't too difficult to implement, like the transparent waves mentioned above behind bullets will be in Max Payne 2?

biXen
08-27-2002, 01:07 PM
Have you seen any waves when bullets are shot? No, then why the hell would you have that in this game, just because it was in Matrix... SIGH...

Maddieman
08-27-2002, 01:26 PM
Well, seeing as Max Payne is, and I quote the back of the box...
every Matrix fans' dream game <font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">I think they have some sort of responsibility to make it as good looking as possible; especially considering the fact that the game almost depends on the bullet-time aspect. Max Payne wouldn't have been the game it is without bullet-time, and without films like The Matrix to inspire it. Of course, with the next two films coming out next year, there will be plenty of new effects that people will want in Max Payne 2.

By the way, half of the suggestions suggested above could be done for Max Payne 1. Expect a golfclub weapon and bullet waves soon. images/icons/wink.gif
