View Full Version : Max Payne: The Movie

Ok, I've heard a lot of people say Johnny Knoxville would make a great Max Payne, and I have to agree to an extent that he would, handling the comedic side and "crazyness" of Max. But in my mind, I think Martin Cummings who was Ames White, the bad guy in Season II of Dark Angel would be the superb choice to play Max* seeing as he looks just like him, and has the "seriousness" Max has and yet can handle the comedic aspects. He is also a brilliant actor and very menacing, indeed.
Here's some pictures:

I must admit that this is best suggestion for Max the Movie, I've read. Poltergeist the Legacy kicked ass! Sort of.
is there still going to be a Max Payne film?

Believe it or not but a few people on the PC Gamer UK Forum changed their opinions when they saw pictures of Martin I had put up. I think he would be superb for the part. So what info is there about the film? I read here last year that it may be a straight to video release? Anyone been cast yet? Crew?

He's closer to a blonde. I see no physical resemblance whatsoever. Now, if you watched the squid baby delivery scene in "Men In Black"...
there was never an official max payne movie... The rights to make that movie were purchased, but it's not verified that a movie will be made...
Will a movie be made? it's hard to say, with the failures that mortal combat made, and the so-so performance of the resident evil movie, it's hard to say whether one will be made or not..
The new fad in films based after pop culture fictional characters is in Comic Books... Spiderman beat out star wars, X-Men was the top grossing film when it came out all summer.. These films will be top priority

Mortal Kombat was actually the most successful Game-To-Film Adaptation before Tomb Raider came out. With Tomb Raider 2, Resident Evil: Nemesis, Alien Versus Predator*, Spy Hunter, Deus Ex, Duke Nukem, and Return To Castle Wolfenstein all due out, I say a Max Payne movie is most definitely possible.
*By Paul Anderson, of Mortal Kombat/ Resident Evil/ Resident Evil: Nemesis fame. This guy knows how to deliver.

Need I remind you of the disaster that was the Super Mario Bros Movie, or the Streetfighter II film? Have any of you seen the second Mortal Kombat film?
Video game plots generally don't transfer well to film, and vice verca. Normally because they're tacked on at the end to justify the insane amount of killing in them. Video games are usually about action, which already puts constraints onto the genre. Also, they're too pre-occupied with re-creating scenes or symbols from the series that fans will identify with; - at the expense of the plot, script, acting, direction, and, well everything.
Paul Anderson did do a fairly good job with the first Mortal Kombat film - considering the material he was given (Enter the dragon with magic, a few monsters, but no Bruce Lee). And I hear the final fantasy film is quite good, despite being a flop at the cinema.
Would a Max Payne film be worth making though? Sure the plot is quite good, but the biggest criticism would be the over use of bullet time and action sequences. The game depended on it, and therefore they'd need to use it in the film. With the next two Matrix films hitting the big screen next year, some guy diving from left to right in slow-mo will look a bit dull. images/icons/wink.gif

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">Yes, and Wing Commander, and Double Dragon. The thing is, nobody but Paul Anderson and Simon West have grasped that a game to film adaptation should not be an epic award winning Academy Award contender, but a 90 minute guns galore fun fest instead. I liked Tomb Raider, I liked Mortal Kombat, I liked Final Fantasy (although it should've just been called "Spirits Within"), and I loved Resident Evil. These are movies that did it right.

I have to say that Simon West and Paul Anderson did wonderful jobs with Tomb Raider and Resident Evil because you have the games where basically you run around solving puzzles with a certain story but not enough to put it on the big screen. To make it work as a movie it needs a lot of work and it's not easy.As for Mortal Kombat how could you adapt a fighting game into a movie, I'm surprised it went as well as it did.And about the actor Craig mentioned I see no resemblance to Max.

You guys are far too strict then because he is really the most perfect choice to play Max. No resemblance my tush, he has the hair, and the same facial featurs, he doesn't have to be 100% a lookalike. I would have said that Elizabeth Hurley would be a better Lara Croft because she is British and a fine Actress, but they picked Jolie who is too a fine Actress, but has the lips and breasts. You guys are wanting too much, he is so perfect for Max, height and everything.

Resident Evil, Tomb Raider, and Mortal Kombat are generally regarded in the film community as being crap. Five or ten years on from now, they'll have been forgotten.
I agree with Craig though. I think Martin Cummings would probably make a good Max Payne. I've seen him in a few programs, and he's a pretty solid actor. The lighing in some of those pictures make his hair look a bit fairer than usual, but has anyone here ever heard of hair dye? I don't think they should pick their actor primarily on looks - if the budget's large enough, make up'll do the rest. If you really want someone who looks just like Max Payne in the film, use Sam Lake. Oh hang on, he can't act at all...

What pains me is, I'll go watch anything, and if I like it I'll say. But everytime a game to film is announced it is always "Oh, it'll be crap then!". They got the man who wrote "24" to write the screenplay for Deus Ex, and given the class of writing involved with 24, all I can say is Deus Ex will be fantastic.
Speaking on films that will be forgotten in five or ten years, Dragonheart, Reign Of Fire, Final Destination, True Lies, Jeepers Creepers, The Man Who Wasn't There, Blade, and a helluva lot more will be forgotten too. But that doesn't make them bad films, they're ok.

many people seem to be making the case that other videogames didnt translate well to the bigscreen because the plots of the video games from which they were adapted were paper thin.
while that is true, we must not forget that max payne was very different from any other game in this regard.
Max payne was story-driven, and they did a good job of intertwining the comic-book scenes with the in-game action.
if the movie is made, im sure the same love and care will go into this aspect.

I think said this before, but choose the actor on his acting ability first and foremost. Then let the makeup department do the rest.
Obviously, a likeness helps; and I'm not suggesting you choose someone completely unsuited to the character. However, it's all very fine if your Max to be can look-the-look; but if he can't walk-the-walk, then he's likely to trip over.

He has been in other movies, beside the Buffy and Angel series on TV. I think he has better potential than some of the otehr guuys posted here. I say that becuase I beleive he could handle the action portions better than the others mentioned. And face it Max wasn;t the loud angry talker, he was the quiet revenge driven fellow. Judging David on his portrayal of a vampire kind of limits what scope of his tallent you get to see.
However that having been said we all have different tastes. Mine just says this is the guy. Yours does not and I can accept and respect that.
In the end it doesn;t matter any wyas. We won't be the ones making the casting choice.

However, as far as the Hollywood machine is concerned, casting an unknown is a risk, and risk not worth taking. Just about every video game based film has flopped (depending on your opinion) so they need to pull a rabbit out of a hat in order to make amends. Yet, I still think they're arrogant enough to assume that an established actor can turn things over. In a way, that might actually be true. Whether the film is any good or not is irrelevant; cast Russell Crowe in the film as Max and you've got a multi-Oscar success story. graemlins/hhg.gif

This is a straight-to-video release. That I'm 99% sure of. To have some half-assed old B-actor to play Max isn't gonna help the movie (Rutger Hauer or something images/icons/tongue.gif )
I think someone up and coming would be great, but not some half-assed soap star. An up and coming director that's a bit controversial, teamed with someone that looks good and has potential, but isn't quite there yet. It's a chance to take, but I hope they do something like that... there's a 70% chance it's gonna suck anyway. I don't wanna see some half-assed actors I know in this movie, it makes B-movies so much worse images/icons/smile.gif

Gary Oldman has done some great films, and there is no doubt that he is a great actor. But in my opinion, his performances have slipped in recent years. Like so many decent actors these days (Sean Connery, Dennis Hopper, etc), he's wasting his talent on crap. They're given a dire plot, a lamentable script, and a minor or typecast role...and they still accept! I guess they assume that their experience will still be able to turn it into success, it's not like they really need the money. As a result, he tends to overact his part, especially when he's not in the lead or supporting role.
The only way I can see Max Payne "The Motion Picture", succeeding is if they ignore the video game altogether - start afresh, using the script/plot as a starting point. Trying to incorporate features from the videogame will only act as an Achilles heel to the film. Look at Mario Bros and Streetfighter - can you believe how ridiculous the plot twists were to get the characters into their signature costumes!?
So what if it's an interpretation of Max Payne - so is the video game in that sense: an interpretation of the Max Payne plot and characters - it was just released first (although technically speaking the plot was written for the game, but the point still follows).
If they treat it as a brand new and original film, it will become one - a successful one at that; if they treat it as a video game adaption - pissing about trying to find someone who looks like Sam Lake; then that is what the end result will be.
Subject to my opinion, of course. images/icons/wink.gif

JAMIE LEE CURTIS as MAX PAYNE! <font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">That is just frightening. graemlins/hhg.gif
But out of interest, how did you achieve the graphic novel effect?

If you turn the sharpness down substantially, you can get the same effect. Then do a bit of grain over it and viola.
Shaft Windu and myself thought that Jamie Lee Curtis as Max Payne was an excellent idea. images/icons/grin.gif
I'm at my families house for thanksgiving, and I'm actually taking time out to post on 3DR... I think I love this place too much.

Uhhm. Okay, Johnny Knoxville looks some sort of MaxPayne-ish.
But has someone ever considered Guy Pearce? (For those who don't know him go to guypearceonline (http://www.guypearceonline.com/) or go to a video store and buy 'Memento') In Memento he even played a character that could somehow be compared to Max Payne. With black hair ... Max Payne.

If they chose Johnny Knoxville to be Max Payne - I would give up hope on Hollywood (not that there is anything to hope for already).
Guy Pearce would be okay... but he's not exactly gritty enough, IMO.
I think my standards are a little too high, however. images/icons/tongue.gif
Edit: Max Payne/Sam Lake doesn't have black hair - it's dark brown. images/icons/smile.gif

We should be happy that Linda Hamilton isn't playing Max Payne. Er... at least I don't think they will be choosing her.

I think actor Max Payne (http://us.imdb.com/Name?Payne,+Max) should play the part of Max Payne, and Tim Curry would be good as Vladimir.

I wonder what it would be like if he played a cross dressing Vlad?... AH! Don’t want to think about it images/icons/tongue.gif
