so...
If you had to compile a soundtrack for the game or the film, what would you put on it?
a couple to start off with....
Machines of Loving Grace - Golgotha Tenement Blues (from The Crow - I love that film images/icons/grin.gif )
Filter - Its Gonna Kill Me (Title Of Record)
This is tough...I'll have to think of some more - Over to you?

Call me controversial, but I did experiment with putting one of the classical music tracks from GTA3 into Max Payne, once. images/icons/smile.gif
Worked surprisingly well with the large, over the top, bullet time gunfights. It's hard to describe exactly why it works, but it does. I guess it's the comedy value obtained from the contrast between the chaos of the fire fight, and the peace from the classical music.
Oh, and uh, heavier rock music works quite well too - for similar (but different) reasons.

Ummm... I'm not a big Nine Inch Nails fan, but how about The Perfect Drug...
as well as uhh... "Let it snow" sung by the chainsaw weilding Junkies from the k2 mod images/icons/grin.gif
OK so I have nothing...

I liked the music from Max Payne a lot, so I'd vote for that first. These wouldn't be so bad, though:
Klint - Are You There
Peter Gabriel - Digging In The Dirt
Overseer - Supermoves
Though another game used it, The Rolling Stones' Paint It Black would be a good addition.

I've once played MP with "Nothing else matters" Metallica. Not bad either. Classic will go too.
I'd have someone compose an original score and leave all that licensed crap to people who make bad games/movies and need something to draw the crowds in..
Maybe Tuomas Kantelinen (http://us.imdb.com/Name?Kantelinen,%20Tuomas) or David Julyan (http://us.imdb.com/Name?Julyan,%20David)..

The movie should have a classical score. I think most movies should, though.

Most movies have that nu-metal crap or some punk-rock stuff.
Classical works pretty well usually, or oldies, like Stuck in the middle in Reservoir Dogs images/icons/grin.gif They make such a good contrast. But basically I want the music to go unnoticed except if it should really do something for a scene.

I usually turn down music completely when I play a game. It's so distracting... (that's also the reason why I never turn on my car radio: listening to any music while driving would make me feel drunk and drive like I was drunk)

I'm the opposite. If I don't have music playing, I start to speed.

It depends on the game really. Without going off on too much of a tangent, I find that when I really need to concentrate (a rock hard mission in gta for example) then I turn the music off.
However, with the exception of Devil Master, if you try playing most games without the music (including ambient music and effects), then they're usually not as fun.
Certain types of music can be used to achieve a certain state of mind in the player - which ultimately affects the way they play/enjoy the game.
For example: some of the music in Max Payne makes the player think that they are 'cool' and encourages them dive about like a maniac in slow-motion. On the other hand, most of the music in Resident Evil is designed to enhance the feelings of terror in the player. A perfect example would be Devil May Cry which uses both effortlessly.
It depends on the scenario and theme you're trying to create. If it's appropriate and fitting to the images then it should work.
With that said, though, you can also mix types about for interesting effects too. If you place an inappropriate piece of music into a scene (like the classical music with an action scene example) then this can emphasise humour.
Failing that, you can simply encode subliminal messages into your game's music - it's been done before. images/icons/wink.gif
Oh, oh, I know!
Ennio Morricone (http://us.imdb.com/Name?Morricone,+Ennio)! I didn't even know he was still alive!

By the way, in the internet you can download the music of MP. But who extracted it from the game? The developers?
I wish I would have the music legally in high-quality MP3 file format.
I'm lovin' it to listen to Max Payne Music (Main) Themes.

I know that many people didn't like this band or song,
but I think it fits Max & the game (the first one):
"Pain" - by Stereomud
[it's really the only song of theirs i listen to, mainly because it relates to so much]
The lyrics seem to fit Max pretty damn well.
I personally love it, and even think about Max Payne 1 when I hear the song.

I think the kill bill or sin city soundtrack would work quite well. :p

I prefer not to play music in single player games 'cause I hate ruining the original feel of the game (that's why I don't play tweak mods, and that's why I appreciate GTA's radio and custom radio functions)
However, if there's any song I think belongs to Max Payne, then it's 'So Cold' by Breaking Benjamin. It sounds dark, tenseful, dramatic, climatic, epic...

Tool's Lateralus album is great for Dead Man Walking. :D I'd heartily recommend that album to anyone.
