..according to the readers of PC Gamer UK magazine. Their February 2003 issue has the top 10 listing of best games, and Max came in #2, which was a jump from #10 in the previous year's poll.
Max came in #2 in the rankings, barely beat out by Half Life. Half Life had 16.1% of the vote, and Max had 14.8%. For the complete listing of games, check out the February 2003 issue of PC Gamer UK magazine!

With all the mediocre titles being released at the moment, I'm not surprised Max stood out. Still, I'm now thinking that I should have voted for it myself.
Anyway, great job; well deserved. images/icons/wink.gif
Edit:
note the impressive leap from last year. Perhaps it's a bit of a grower?<font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">Perhaps a certain martial arts themed mod boosted its appeal and lastability... images/icons/tongue.gif

For now, yes.
I can think of at least one person who's choice to purchase Max Payne was partly influenced by the kung fu mod.

It's one of the few good most recent games I possess which still runs nicely on my old computer. This game still rocks. images/icons/smile.gif

Second best game ever?
Either this is an example of that zany British sense of humour, or a good part of PCG UK's readership has overdosed on Valkyr.

What is Half-Life doing on that list? It had some new stuff but it wasn't a GREAT game, was too boring to play through even. Max to the top! (I'd say possibly a couple of games are better than Max, e.g. GTA3. It's hard to judge, cause they are so different)

BTW, what's a Cheerio and why on earth would I want to put it in a bowl?

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">There're videogames that looks a lot better than MP, but it still remain the best for certain things.
Lately I played "Mafia", great game, after 2 or 3 missions I thought "wow, that's the best game I 've seen!", but when I was at the end I didn't feel to play it again. If I need to relax I prefer to play MP with a good mod or trying to edit it myself. images/icons/smile.gif

2nd best? Ummm....what about:
(I don't have the list in front of me all I know is 1st Half-life 2nd Max Payne)
1. Deus Ex
2. Doom
3. Worms 2 (endless gameplay)
4. Counter-Strike
I mean Max Payne was alright and all but this is the list of ALL TIME (consoles excluded I assume)

Counter-Strike isn't a game, it's a mod. Deus Ex wasn't a 90%+ game, lacked some things for that, Worms 2 is entertaining but it's nothing special, and Doom wasn't all that good. Wolfenstein was better even. I'd rather put Duke3D than Doom there, played Duke3D for 2 years, single and multiplayer, basically every day. There's some really great games out there, like Fallout series, Jagged Alliance series, Neverwinter Nights etc. But it really needs something special to be my all-time favourites, and Max Payne has something special. I don't really remember what NWN was about now, and I played that later than Max Payne, but I remember Max Payne's story bright as day, eventhough I've only really played through it once.

I played through Baldur's Gate 1 in, I don't know, 1999? But I still remember it better than Max Payne (maybe it's because of the whole ~130hours versus ~15 hours of gameplay).
Now, I'm not saying Max is bad, it beats the hell out of Half-Life, GTA3 and whatnot in my books. But it's nowhere near the level of enjoyment that comes from playing through Neverwinter Nights with a couple friends.
But, I think MP is in the right spot on that list. (because, well, you can't honestly expect people to vote for what's really the BEST when they're allowed to vote.. just look at the MTV awards.. or better yet, look at the United States' president images/icons/tongue.gif ) But Half-Life's on the wrong spot, that's for sure. There are tens of games that are worse than Payne, yet better than Half-Life.

Yeah, but I don't count best game ever purely from hours of enjoyment, if I did, Duke3D would be the best ever. I base it on many things, and Bioware knows their shit, but an RPG never is enough of a whoopass feeling to take that crown. RPG's do more like... grow on me... Although 3 of my favourite games are RPGs, Fallouts, Jagged Alliances and NWN.

I agree, RPGs don't usually impress me enough to make them my favorite games. Only the Fallout games, Jagged Alliance 2 and Torment would have a chance of getting on my top 10. I didn't like Baldur's Gate that much and don't even want to try BG2. I liked Diablo but have zero interest towards D2.
But Max Payne is still my favorite game and probably will be for some time

But...well, it depends on tastes...

I prefer RPGs, yes, but have had a recent drop in interest towards them because they all seem so PREDICTABLE story-wise.(And no, I don't play Final Fantasy or the other console 'Rpgs' around.)
I prefer games like Fallout and Arcanum(which is hugely under-rated but oh well...) over games like Neverwinter Nights(can't say it's a bad game, but got bored somewhere around chapter 3 because it got a tad repetetive).
As for max, it's been on my hdd since october 2001, and my patience isn't done yet with it, so I guess it deserves it's place.

Why can't Counter-strike be considered for conetention? Game companys use each others engines all the time. I guess we have to have it packaged up in some neat shrinkwrap and pay 50 bucks for it to be a "real game." I just don't understand what is so great about Max Payne. Please enlighten me. I realize this is the 3D Realms forums and all but all I see is your everyday run and shoot. I don't know how you cannot recongize Doom for what it is to the world of gaming today, and yes, it was all that good. These kids today.

Then again, it's not a secret that quite a lot of the new multiplayer FPS's you see every now and then try to be a new CS. As for BF1942, I'm yet to get that but I don't know if I ever will when the single player is as poorly done as the Q3 single player.

Gawd, I don't think I even know anyone who'd have bought Half-Life for the singleplayer experience. It was so they'd get to play CS online.
And, even in singleplayer mode, playing against the dumbest bots in the history of mankind, BF1942 beats Q3 by a mile.
Hey, I just read in a pc games megazine I usually buy that here in Italy Max is one of the most loved characters with Duken Nukem.
