Well, the interface was better after the revamp and loss of topics is not that bad.
I'm actually worried about mod in there...

And just visit the site. That. Person. Is. Crazy.

If Mentor is really in charge, I'll abbadon MPHQ, and I will join this community, wich is a warm, and friendly one.

Heh, perhaps that was a bit to much?

I'm not so sure it will be that bad. But, then again, I've been known to be wrong. The worst thing for me to see is all the people leaving there in droves. I wonder if it will be worth visiting if it is a ghost-town????

But, to be honest, I usually just went there to be entertained by the regulars, several of whom I was fond of, and also for pimpage of Evolution and other mods I've worked on. Anytime I wanted to get serious information on any Max editing, these forums were ALWAYS the first place I'd visit. Plus, we've got MaddieMan here. You'll never see a more helpful person who is willing to answer all your modding questions.

Also, for those of you who don't know, there are two other Max Payne sites who could certainly use your patronage if you want to leave MPHQ.

First is, obviously, Bixen's site..... Payne Reacter, at....

http://www.paynereactor.com/

It's not up and running at the moment, but if you guys want a new stomping ground, just say the word and Bix will most assuredly throw some stuff together to get it up and running for you guys. The only reason he took it down in the first place is because the community spent a majority of its time at MPHQ.

And, there is always Deep Six, run by White Rabbit, Azz, our very own Aavenr, and several others. I think it's kind of unknown by this community, and as such, dosen't update as often as MPHQ, but that could certainly change if it suddenly gets an influx of new people. Oh, the addy is....

http://www.3dactionplanet.com/maxpayne/

The folks over there are really good guys. So, give 'em a visit and see if it's to your liking. images/icons/wink.gif

But, all that said, I think MPHQ will be alright. But, time will tell. BTW, where did GuttBomb go anyway????

Speaking of Deep Six and other Max Payne websites to gather at, I just read an older post at Deep Six (see, even I haven't been there in a while? I need to remedy that), well, reading an older news blurb there entitled "Help Resurrect Max Payne Center", I saw the following news from aavenr,

"The word is out that Josh, former webmaster of the defuct Max Payne Center is trying to resurrect the website which was apparently shut down a couple of months ago due to increasing bandwith costs and the toll it was taking on its former host, the Media and Games Online Network. We at Deep Six want to encourouge you to go and support the cause by signing the petition (http://www.petitiononline.com/mpc321/petition.html) in order to get that website back out there. Common' people, it's for the community's sake! "

I wasn't too fond of Max Payne Center, most people that's been here from the beginning know why. But with MPHQ being injured and Deep Six and Paynereactor being small and inactive this community needs something.

Now my forums are up and running, but they are not online. I didn't plan to open them until the page is up, but I dunno if it would be of any use. At least people could register and roam around a bit if they wanted, but I dunno. The page is well underway at least, design is done, doing some logo works, layout works, and working with my coder to clarify how things will work. I'll probably have some crew this time around. Anyway, I hope this community will be strong again around Max Payne 2. This time I'm gonna be prepared for all troubleshooting and stuff like that too, that will also fend off much flaming. If there's an interest in opening my forums (where it'll be a bit more loose than here, but still moderated) you can let me know, I'll consider it. Without GutBomb I doubt I'll get a button at MPHQ, so I dunno what kind of numbers I can get to my site, but with some insight and early news I hope to get at least those that still follow the game images/icons/smile.gif Stay with Maxy everyone, and support the sites. (mine is bannerless atm, so nevermind that)...signing to help MPC is good though.

You know what's funny strat? I found a couple of days ago that petition has been there for almost a year now.

Speaking for Deep Six, Problem is most of the Deep Six staff has given up to to the harsh reality. That only lefts maniac and me as active staff members. I am pretty busy myself with my modding project so i will limit myself to news posting and maybe writting an article once in a while.

Even being backed up by the almighty Gamespy Network, we have got practically zero hosting possibilities since all our mods died long time ago and the site ain't that popular to encourage other sites to move on.

I will make sure we stay around for a while but the site will probably focus on news and articles (reviews, interviews, editorials, etc).

It really scares me to think the most influential site on the community and resident mod hosting monopoly is in Mentor's hands. I damm well hope we are wrong about Mentor or this community will become even lonelier and more hardcore than ever. At least till Max 2 comes along that is.

Some hope can be found on the always understimated german max payne sites. Just go and take a look at http://www.mpzone.de or http://maxpayne.gamevision.de/index.php and you will see what I am talking about. Nobody beats those guys at posting modding news and it's damm well worth the hassle of using Babelfish (http://babelfish.altavista.com)

Regardless of whether this was a joke I stopped visiting MPHQ along time ago..

I just can't stand going to the site, sure it's big but the colors are terrible (dark red links on a black bg? Come one.. Web Design's Big No-No), and I was always visiting Max Payne Center and Payne Reactor.

Now that MPC has been gone for a long time I'm left with Payne Reactor.. so bixen you do have a little following for your site.

Anyway Max Payne sites are almost as rare as Duke sites now.

I tried starting a Duke site but it didn't get very popular.. about a measly 10 to 20 hits a day.

Ahh well.

Luckily it was a joke, but it still doesn't change the fact that the MPHQ community is pretty shattered, as the whole Max Payne community is. A lot of talented people has left it just because it's not a pleasant community for learners.

Let someone that don't even know what max payne is lead one of the last MP sites. I don't know how cool that is. Mentor's main interest at MPHQ is flaming as many n00bs as possible.

Flaming and spamming are just one problem there. Also all the tallented people have left MPHQ ages ago, of course there are some tallented people who use to stop by and some that has decided to stay. So if you ask an advance question over at the MPHQ forum, you would most likely not get your question answered.

another of the problems are the people that find the flaming and spamming entertaining, and would like to keep MPHQ the way it is. And specialy when some of these people are staff members. If gutbomb keep making people he find entertaining, and not the one that suits the job, mphq will never come out of the stage it's in now.

True, it's now become a sort of exclusive club, where if they don't know you then you're not welcome.

I've never felt comfortable posting there, and doubt whether this forum re-vamp will improve matters. As you said, some of the moderators are unfit for the job; bending the rules between what counts as a flame and what doesn't is unacceptable.

FreDsom
02-09-2003, 08:38 AM
well.. since you are a respected moder, everybody will just suckup when you post. I feel more sorry for the n00bs, they will most likely be flamed if they post there..

Max Payne 2 is going to be released in the best part of a year, and that means there will be another wave of talented and aspiring modders willing to learn and create. They say that like attracts like; so at crunch time, whichever site has the most attractive community is most likely to thrive in this area.

With MPHQ currently being the largest and most active mp community; Gutbomb is going to have to make some important decisions - which could include the removal of some of the more popular mphq staff and regulars.

Otherwise the class structure they have in place at the moment will kill their community and perhaps the site too. They supposedly offer freedom of speech (in contrast to the strict moderation here), and look where it has taken them - the community is divided into a strict hierarchy where existing modders are worshipped, and newbies aren't given the time of day.

All they have to offer at the moment is bandwidth; and because of this there won't be any incentive for new modders to go there to help, get hosted, or release anything.

Well.. MPHQ can become a great place. GutBomb are a skilled webmaster, he got all the knowledge that is needed to run a site at that scale. But it seems like he doesn't care about the place anymore. And some days it seems like he care, and start a massive campaign to make stop the flaming and spamming, and the next day he unban and makes one of the flame #1 flamers admin.

as you said, GutBomb mus decide if it's gonna be a playground for flamers that don't even know what Max Payne is, or a proper max payne fansite where the n00bs can ask without being flammed.

Sam

Well, I suppose that what confuses me is Gutbomb's rather fickle attitude towards the whole site. One day he is complaining that it is a babysitting job to him and decides to wipe the forums, and another day he decides to make Mentor, whom some of us know to be a rather controversial member of MPHQ, the "owner" of the site (and to this day Mentor remains an Administrator at the site).

Some others have commented that he (Gutbomb) may have a somewhat "sandbox" attitude towards the whole thing; one minute he wants to build up, and the next he wants to destroy it.

I've noticed that the forum activity over there has been significantly reduced in the past few weeks - despite the imminent release of kung fu 3.

Meanwhile, biXen (being the crafty person he is) seems to be sneaking around all the promising mods, offering them hosting at paynereactor. images/icons/grin.gif

I'm curious to find out what the outcome is of all this; but I guess that until mp2 is released, we can only speculate.

No doubt about it, The Real World looks damm promising. Last time I saw a big TC gather so much hype and actually showing on an almost daily basis shots to prove the hype was straton's evolution a couple of months back. Seriously every single week i find myself forced to post about some neat stuff that the TRW team has come up with.

This has been the one on the spotlight over the last couple of weeks and there's a reason for that.

Then again so MANY promising TC's have been CANCELLED (let me stress 'many' and 'cancelled' again) on the last 22 months I tend to think it twice before getting too excited by something. images/icons/rolleyes.gif
