Well, there's this movie coming out in a couple of months, forget what it's called, with Vin Deisel, about a cop who had his family (a wife and a baby girl!) butchered by some thugs hired by a drug-dealer, Vin is removed of his deuties of a cop because of some-situation, and then puts the law in his own hands to get the drug-dealer, while getting chased by the cops sounds odly too much like Max Payne, I bet t'was inspired by it...

<joking> ripofff!!! how dare they!!! lets boycott the film!!!!</joking>
I'm sure its just coincidence, should be interesting to see though....
I was quite surprised when I first played Max Payne how similar it was to one of my favourite books... Time goes by and I keep seeing similarities. I guess if you look hard enough, there they are.
So for anyone who is interested, the book is called 'Spares' (http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/0006512674/ref=sr_aps_books_1_1/026-2387236-4057211) by Michael Marshall Smith.
You could read the similarities as:
Its about a cop whose wife and baby daughter are murdered by a hitman high on some nasty drug called rapt. He leaves town for a while and comes back to get revenge on the people who killed his family.
In doing so, his ex partner in the police is shot dead.
The person ultimatley responsible is the head of some large corporation with the city in his pocket, and plenty of friends in high places.
The drug in question was also used by the military on their own soldiers.
The main character Jack, befriends a mafia member (who isn't russian images/icons/tongue.gif )
The book is kind of a detective novel, the character Jack even talks a bit like Max, lots of witty asides and internal monologues.
But the book is much more than the similarities, there are a lot of other important story elements (too many to go into), not to mention the setting. You really couldn't mistake it for Max Payne images/icons/tongue.gif

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">Have you ever read "Every Dead Thing" by John Connoly? The prologue enspecially is pretty like that of Max Payne and some descriptions remind me a lot the game images/icons/wink.gif

I haven't read any John Conolly books, (they're on my 'to read' list for when I've graduated images/icons/wink.gif ) Seems to be a very popular author though, always lots of people buying his books at work.
Seriously, I can't recommend Michael Marshall Smith enough. I recommended Spares to a friend of mine on the basis that it was kinda like Max Payne (which he loved). He's now been sucked in and has read all the other books (which aren't really like max payne at all).
The description above doesn't do the book justice, you couldn't really describe it without pigeonholing it in the wrong category images/icons/tongue.gif
Its kind of sci-fi but not, dark comedy, twisted, surreal and very entertaining.....
Ok, so enough with the sales pitch images/icons/grin.gif

But, whilst on the subject of great books, I would like to recommend one of my favourites: "Nine Mil (http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/0747261202/qid%3D1048030305/sr%3D2-2/ref%3D/202-5699562-4041440)" by Rob Ryan (http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/search-handle-url/index=books-uk&field-author=Ryan%2C%20Rob/202-5699562-4041440). Absolutely one of the best Mafia-related fictional books ever written.
