I never received a response from Remedy or Talonsoft regarding SafeDisc problem for over a month. This is the problem where you get the Max Payne splash screen , your CD drive spins for a while and then nothing.

Here is Safe Disk Troubleshooting Guide complements of TimeGate Studios. Last step solved my problem today.

2) Make sure that your machine is running Windows 95, Windows 98, ME, or Windows 2000
3) Check that there is adequate free disc space in the system temp directory. A SafeDisc protected product requires up to 600KB of disc space. If sufficient disc space is not available, an operating system generated message will be displayed. A typical message of this type is ‘There is not enough space on the disk’.
4) Check for CD-ROM/CD-RW/DVD driver updates. Links to many popular drive manufacturers can be found at http://www.kohan.net/kis/support/support.htm#Download.
5) Try toggling DMA support for your CD drive.
A. Win98 users
a. Click Start/Settings/Control Panel
b. Double-click on System
c. Click on the Device Manager tab
d. Click the + next to CD-ROM
e. Click on your CD drive
f. Click on Properties
g. Click on the Settings tab
h. If DMA is unchecked, check it. If it is checked, uncheck it.
i. Restart your computer and try to launch Kohan
j. If this did not resolve the problem reverse the change you made
B. Win2000 users
a. Click Start/Settings/Control Panel
b. Double-click on System
c. Click on the Hardware tab
d. Click on Device Manager
e. Click the + next to IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers
f. Click on the Secondary IDE Channel (for most machines)
g. Right-click and select Properties
h. Click on the Advanced Settings tab
i. Change the transfer mode from DMA to PIO only
j. Restart your computer and try to launch Kohan
k. If this did not resolve the problem reverse the change you made
6) If you have any of the following programs installed on your computer they may prevent SafeDisk from executing properly.
a. Guard Dog (an internet monitoring utility)
b. Pretty Good Privacy (a.k.a. PGP – an encryption program)
c. Nero burning software from Ahead Software
d. Playback
e. Insectors
f. DeIce or SoftIce
g. VMWare Virtual Machine
h. Daemon Tools (Note: versions of Daemon Tools prior to 2.74 do not uninstall properly, so if you had Daemon Tools installed but have since uninstalled it, it will fail. You need to install and uninstall version 2.74 or later.)
