I read on www.dcemulation.com (http://www.dcemulation.com) today that they used the source code to port rott to the dreamcast (http://sdl-dc.sourceforge.net/#rott). I'm downloading it now, lets see how it looks!

Holly shit! Thats awesome! I wish I had a dreamcast...well a modded dreamcast....or a decent computer to run an emulator. But this is great news for all dreamcast fans!

joe: to get it on the dreamcast, download it, and burn it.
right now, I'm not going to even bother with the fairly complicated instructions for gettung the full version running on DC, but they do include a pre-wrapped (with self-boot and all) version using the shareware episode, just download the apropriate version and burn... the ISOs are for Nero burning rom and disc juggler... and if you don't have one of those, you probably should get them. images/icons/tongue.gif

the dreamcast is unique in that, even un-modded, it WILL run CD-R discs.. (as a side note, I have a friend who has a collection of pirated dreamcast discs, but frankly, on many of them, they had to cut corners to get them to fit on the disc, so I don't bother with them myself...) Because of this, there IS a vibrant little homebrew community, and there are several ports of games like this. there are a couple ports of Doom (and heretic and hexen) as well as quake, and a version of descent is in progress.... even ports of SCUMM VM, ZZT, and Frotz.. but we're not here to talk about those, so without further ado...

as for how ROTT plays: right now, the only control support so far is gamepad (using the analog stick), but the four face buttons of the DC gamepad ARE mappable using ROTT's joystick setup menu (including double tap, for a total of 8 possible functions), and escape is bound to the start button, for bringing up the menu. it works, but it would be lots better with full mouse/keyboard support.
The game plays pretty smooth for the most part, but I've noticed a couple spots where it hitches (like when accessing the disc when you pick up new weapon for the first time, or the first time in a level, or gibbing someone for the first time, or pulling up the menu from within the game.)
Also, it even allows you to save your config (it saves how you configure your buttons on exiting the game completely) and allows to save your position in the game by bringing up the menu and choosing save.
overall, its not bad at all for the first version of the DC port. they even managed to get the sound and music correct, and some of the doom ports haven't even done that yet. I'd say its pretty impressive, and worth a look if you enjoy ROTT at all, and have a dreamcast, and a PC with a burner in it.

Way cool port. I definitly like it! Controlls are very well done. I just wish I could use the d-pad instead of the analog stick, or a straight keyboard (I don't use the mouse). The analog stick has just a bit of trouble, mainly with it not being quite sensitive enough. Also wish I could strafe with the L and R triggers. But everything else is top notch! My only question is how the music was done...Ultrasound patches? It sounds good.

After ruining about 3 CDR's I finally got the Shareware version running on my DC, and I have to say it's a great port. The framerate is rock solid and never seems choppy, although your right about the game having hic ups once in a while. But they seemed pretty minor to me and only froze the game for about a second or so.

And AXE, I should point something out to you. I tried my DC keyboard out of curiosity to see if it worked, and it does. All keys are mapped accordingly and can be reconfigured to your liking. I played the ROTT shareware for about 20 minutes just using my DC keyboard. I can't say if the DC mouse works though, since I don't own one.

The buttons on the DC controller are completely customizable too, its a shame that only the four face buttons work though, but I'm thinking this is because ROTT only supported 4 button controllers.

All the different screen sizes options and graphic details settings see to work as well. Pretty cool stuff, this is definitely one of the better DC ports I’ve seen so far.

Most homebrew or ported stuff don't even support only the broadband adapter. Not to mention modemplay.
I'm not sure if there network code in KallistOS or when if it is working.

you'll need to download the utility, but there is a link on that page. its really not to incredibly complicated, but you do have to follow it exactly, otherwise you may end up with a coaster. I have. :-p

I messed a bit more with my shareware burn: keyboard does indeed work, however, mouse is a no. though it looks like it tries to send input when I jiggle the mouse: everything freezes up for a second. still, I played it back in the day with just the keyboard, so this works for me. w00t.

hopefully mouse support in a soon version.

It sells enough to warrant remaking the CD master. Most games when we run out of stock, that's it, it's deleted from the product line, because most of the old stuff doesn't sell enough to warrant spending the money to make more.

Also the only reason ROTT has this kind of extras is because I make the CD masters, and ROTT was the lone game I worked on as an actual developer, so I have more materials than usual for this. Plus, nothing NEW was created here (well, some of the behind the scenes pics haven't been seen before), it's just all culled from various places (the net, the EROTT CD, etc..)

Hey thats pretty cool. Will it be the same price as what your selling now? More/less?<font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">It should be the same price - I can't imagine why we'd raise the price.

No. We're not updating the game. Just making new CD's. Be glad someone gives a shit to even bother to collect all this stuff.

Re: Ted and Ted Turner.

It actually stands for "Tile EDitor". The docs spell all that out.

Re: GlROTT..

I considered putting some of the ports that have come up from the ROTT source on there. Even though we have the rights to do it under OpenGL, I decided against it - because it could be mistaken as an endorsement of said product, and even despite numerous claims to the contrary, people would expect us to support those things.

The new cd sounds like a great idea! I'll buy it as soon as it's available, but I was wondering if it
would be possible to provide the cd image file
for download too on top of the regular download
already available at the on-line store. That way, if a customer has a fast enough connection, you can either order the regular cd through the mail, or
opt to download the cd image file, and burn the image file to a blank cd. Just an idea..... If I have to order the new cd through the regular mail, that's fine too..

Thanks!

no, putting the dc port on it too wouldn't be smart. aside from the fact that joe already stated, about external ports aren't supported, and yet they'd be bugged by it to no end, the DC port is still.. well, a work in progress. on TOP of that, it would be a pain to make the game launch on DC AND pc properly.. it would be possible, but its an extra step, and this is, not to be disrespectful, simply shovelware of all things OFFICIAL ROTT. thats not a bad thing: shovelware of old games that either I missed out on, or lost the original discs, etc.... yeah, I'd buy it if its GOOD old stuff.
