That was actually pretty good. It was a lot better than I expected, it even has a flashack of finding his family dead. It takes a while to download, but I thought it was worth it.

that was cool, but it had some of the slowest bullets ever ( gues it was the bullettime images/icons/wink.gif )
pretty good fx and pretty good acting images/icons/smile.gif

Yeah, I know about this - they asked for permission first. I'm doing a news story on it after I "make my rounds" here on the forums.

That's one of the thugs. images/icons/smile.gif
I just got around to watching it (I had to wait in line for 30-45 minutes at Fileplanet, then had other things to do afterwards)
That was an awesome movie! images/icons/grin.gif images/icons/grin.gif images/icons/grin.gif
I don't care for the song, but the movie was sweet.

Yeah, music aside, it was pretty cool http://forums.3drealms.com/ubb/icons/icon107.gif
The production value was surprisingly good considering it was fan made.

I think the song suited the climax very well, but it's not my type of song. The movie was very well done though, as I said the climax had a good feel to it, it's pretty well done when you get a feel after seeing a 2 minute movie, maybe it's something that's stuck in me from the game images/icons/smile.gif

That was really good, however, one thing I noticed was that Max seemed to spend more time crawling on his knees than diving about shooting. images/icons/smile.gif
Furthermore, I thought the ending with the headbutt was a bit too comic for my tastes, but entertaining nontheless. Finally, I think the actor who played Max went a bit too overboard with the facial expressions. images/icons/tongue.gif
As good as it was, my favourite Max Payne fan-movie is still this (http://www.inspired.sk/flash/movies/movie.php?ID=35). images/icons/smile.gif

This movie demonstrates why, in the REAL movie, Max Payne must be played by Sam Lake. The movie itself may be uber-cool, but it just doesn't feel right if another actor is playing Max Payne.

Well, I think that it was very cool. It captured very nicely something about the game. Anyone can argue about the music, but I liked it. Overall very cool for a student to do something like this. Hopefully this opens his way into doing music videos or whatever he wants to do.

Well, he certainly benefits from having access to a film camera that can do proper slow motion. It drives me nuts making my own action movies on video how awful slow motion looks when you try to do it on video. The cutting is perhaps a bit slower than seems right to me, certain shots like when they reload their guns linger a tiny bit too long. But hey, I've done that too, it's hard to be objective as the director AND the editor, which this guy was.
One of these days I'll get me the cash for proper movie guns (instead of the airsoft pistols I'm currently using for movies) and a whole bunch of squibs. Then I'd make a movie like that, but with music that doesn't sound totally and jarringly out of place.

You're just restricted to "half-speed" (ie. run it at 12.5fps (15fps for NTSC) with field interpolation) or it'll look like ass.
But shooting on film at 100fps (or more) is some sweet skit, thank god for friends "in the biz" with 16mm cameras to borrow images/icons/cool.gif Like manna from the heaven.

Some months ago, we were contacted by Max Payne fan Chris Chen about permission to make a Max Payne fan video - which we gave him permission to. At the time, not much was thought of the request, but Chris came back with something that stunned us. He has produced a school film project based on Max Payne. Here's a bit of what Chris had to say about the video when he emailed us and told us it was finished..
Awhile ago I was mentioning to you that I was thinking of doing my final year project at film school as a tribute to Max Payne and John Woo. A couple months passed, I am now finished, and I'm ready to show you and the world. As a film student, I did as much as I can to be as true to Max Payne and John Woo style as I can be on a student budget, so I hope you'll enjoy this piece as I have enjoyed making it.
Now that I'll be graduating, I hope to do more projects like this in the future as this is what I truly want to do.
You should check out this video, it's quite good, and the quality is extremely good. You can download the video at the website at http://www.maxpaynehero.com - which also has information about Chris, his school project, and more!

A better or more suitable music track would've been preferable, but that's only a minor fault in an otherwise supernice short flick.
I give it three thumbs up (having three arms rules): http://forums.3drealms.com/ubb/icons/icon107.gif http://forums.3drealms.com/ubb/icons/icon107.gif http://forums.3drealms.com/ubb/icons/icon107.gif

whew, that was nice
i wish he used sound effects rather then music dubbing the whole thing.
everything was great till the end, the punching and head butting looked too fake.

The actual weapon effects and the cinematography are actualy not that bad.
But the music the piece is set to (Chad Kroeger - Hero) is a ****ing TERRIBLE match for this.
Plus there are no weapon sounds or any other sound besides that awkward song playing in the background.

From the official site (http://www.maxpaynehero.com/aboutme.html)
Since a major portion of my budget was going towards special effects, there wasn't enough money to do two takes on most shots. Any shot that involved something like a box being blown to bits was done on one take only. We would rehearse it a few times before we'd get our Super16mm camera rolling. One shot in particular was a little nerve racking. It involved a lot of pyrotechnics and a dolly. This means more variables to work with, a better chance of something going wrong, and that it can only be one take. There were suggestions on changing the shot or faking it but my heart was to go and try it because I was confident that it can work and I believe it did.<font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">The guy did a damn fine job, especially considering the constraint of only having one take to get it right.

Yeah it was really good but the only two beefs I have with it have been mentioned. The music choice, the lack of sound effects, and the Max beating that guy at the end. It looked too fake, he should have stopped at the pistol whip.
For a student film I was really impressed with the quality. He might have spent all his budget on the guns and the explosive effects and not been able to get hit hands on some good quality weapon sounds for the post film stuff.

Much better than any direct to video movie. This the best B-day present I downloaded(I'm 19 now).

I just downloaded and watched the video (twice).
Excellent film. The lighting was very good, the action was excellent, and the flashback really added to understanding Max.
Excellent choice in song tho, and if Max Payne is made into a film, Hero should be one of the tracks.
The director may want to study Woo's earlier films, such as Hard Boiled. Seems like this one was based on some of his newer US films. His earlier stuff has a lot more action and a lot more squid use....heh. images/icons/grin.gif
As far as slo-mo goes nowadays...if you're using a good digital video camera, there are plenty of plug-ins now that allow for smooth slo-mo. You can also increase your shutter speed...that will help as well. Although I imagine this was probably shot in 16mm and edited digitally.
Also, if he hasn't already, he should also consider putting his film on iFilm.com, Triggerstreet.com, etc.

"As I listened to it more, I pictured a whole choreographed scene and I thought that this would make a very cool action-packed music video. "

The lighting was f*cking awful! It was way too basic tv-lighting, the only reason it didn't look like total ass was because it was shot on film. And looking at some of the shots, it's as if the director has never heard of "colour correction".
The flashback was pretty awful too, as were many of the cuts. The colours were all wrong in the flashback (yes, I realise the blue was an effect, but it looked like ass).
All in all, it was really, really, really, really, really, really, really average. Sure, I've seen tons of student films that are much worse, but I've also seen tons that are better. Nothing to write home about.

The thing that helps is an editing system that supports field interpolation (like AVID (http://www.avid.com/)).
And yes, obviously Max Payne Hero was shot on 16mm, because the director said so on the damn web page.
EDIT: Some typos.

Max Payne looks like Matthew Broderick from Ferris Bueller's Day Off.
Wow, I finally downloaded the video...it's pretty good, the bullets effects are simply amazing!
The only thing I don't like is the ending scene and the music track, it doesn't fit with the video for me.
Very cool job though, I hope to see something like that in the official movie. images/icons/smile.gif
