View Full Version : Weird Windows Pics returns

You all probably remember that thread called Weird Windows Pics that was started about 3 years ago and ended in June 2002. I visited that thread today and noticed that about 98% of the images have been deleted from the posters servers, obviously because they didn't want to leave it on there anymore. So I wanted to start this kind of thread again except I also want to put these pics up on a section in my website, that way we won't lose the stuff because I thought that thread was really cool.
So I guess I'll make my first contribution. Open/Download the attachment, its the pic.
Now in the picture I've posted there is a D drive, yet I only have one hard drive in the computer. After rebooting it disappeared.

I have a weird Windows pic!!
This is from my dad's computer. The reason is obvious (lack of CPU power), but I think it looks weirder than usual this time.
Sorry it's so compressed - he doesn't have cropping tools. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif

As much as I hate to say it (I hate to say it because now I can't make fun of Windows), XP doesn't have bugs like one would expect. Any problems that I've been having have been due to bugs in the program that I'm using. Maybe somebody should make a thread titled "Weird Program Pics" instead.

One thing that drives me nuts is that when you use thumbnail view all the folders change the pic at random. You also get folders you never assigned a pic just picking some weird pic at random.

Thanks for all those who have contributed so far. Just to inform you I am saving all the images posted so far. Eventually once I get enough I'll get a section on my site set up and post these images.
Since that one time on my old computer I haven't gotten any other weird Windows stuff happen. But if I do I won't hesitate to capture it.

It's way too bad my school updated the remander of the old computers to Windows 2000. If they didn't, I would be having a field day in this thread.
Using AutoCAD was always fun;
You may not save this drawing, a command is still open.

Though at school, something weird happened to Win2k, it was kinda like a BSOD, but no shot was takeable, it was a boot error. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif Did you save what few pics remain in the old thread?

As for any other pics. I'm sorry to say nothing has come up. I do have a few pics from the old thread that I saved (what was left when I skimmed it recently) I will post some of those here in the next couple of days. Right now I'm in the process of revamping my website for the third time so I will be starting a section on my website for this stuff. I hope to get everything completed by Tuesday, which will be the 1 year anniversary of my website opening.

It should be noted that the "Shockwave OBJECT tag" widely used on the Internet is not a correct usage of the HTML tag, just the only method IE supports. Netscape has supported the correct usage of the tag since Netscape6. So there.

Finally, I have something weird to post. For whatever reason when ever I rename a large file, and I forget to put the extention back in, the system will hang, and I would have to restart explorer. But this time everything got bent out of shape. I was uninstalling a program, and while it was uninstalling, I also renaimed the Unreal 2k demo and forgot to include the extention. After I hit enter, the folder it was in hung. I decided to give it a minute to see if it would do anything, so I browsed the forums for a while. Then I tried just closing the window and nothing happend. I minimized Firebird, and what I was looking at covered the window that the Unreal demo was in.

McAfee-Question: Is Windows a virus?
No, Windows is not a virus. Here's what viruses do:
They replicate quickly - okay, Windows does that.
Viruses use up valuable system resources, slowing down the system as they do so - okay, Windows does that.
Viruses will, from time to time, trash your hard disk - okay, Windows does that too.
Viruses are usually carried, unknown to the user, along with valuable programs and systems. Sigh... Windows does that, too.
Viruses will occasionally make the user suspect their system is too slow (see 2.) and the user will buy new hardware. Yup, that's with Windows, too.
Until now it seems Windows is a virus but there are fundamental differences:
Viruses are well supported by their authors, are running on most systems, their program code is fast, compact and efficient and they tend to become more sophisticated as they mature.
So Windows is not a virus. It's a bug.

Oh XP has bugs, the difference is it doesn't have alot of the smaller, more noticable bugs like in older versions... no, XP bugs, when they hit, you will know it, they tend to be major. I, and several friends have been forced to re-install windows due to some of these bugs that, when they hit, prevented us from accessing windows again. In one case I couldn't boot windows in safe mode either and had no choice but to re-install.
Then there are all the less noticable bugs, like the tons of security holes XP has had. There have been a LOT of patches and updates for XP... you don't patch something that works fine. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif
This happened while uninstalling something (I believe it was CorelDraw) Apparentally it was asking if I wanted to reboot because when I clicked Yes it shut Windows down and rebooted the computer.
I got the same thing when unistalling the codex of drivrx
EDIT: noticed that I unistalled "DivX pro Codex Adware"? http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/eek.gif

Yeah, I have noticed this. When XP goes down, IT GOES DOWN. Fortunetly, it doesn't do this often.

Note that the infected explorer.exe was from Win98 while the one I replaced it with came from WinME. Are they brothers? Because my computer started up perfectly after the switch! http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/eek.gif http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/eek.gif http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/eek.gif
WinME is just 98 with the latest MS bundled programs in it. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif Therefore the Explorers should interact fine.

Not really a funny thing about Windows, but this probably doesn't deserve its own thread, so I'll put it here.
Since I got my own computer five months ago, my father's computer has been used at home primarily by him, my mother, and my younger brother. My father is the most computer-savvy of the three, and not by much. As such, when I went home last weekend, I heard several complaints that "the Internet" was acting weird, or more specifically IE. Sure enough, it was doing very strange things, like closing the current window when you clicked any link, and showing popups completely randomly. Signs of spyware, I thought. I decided to install and run Ad-Aware, which was a bitch, because I couldn't ever get to the download page without IE doing something screwy. (I finally got it with Mozilla, of which I am the only user in the family.)
The attached picture shows the results screen.

That's one thing I absolutley hate about Windows. As soon as anything goes askew, it's advice is to reinstall the operating system. Although it may be hard for MS to believe, not everyone wants to spend half a day reinstalling their OS, drivers and data (Infact, most users simply don't have the know-how to do it).
Whenever I get those messages, I usually ignore them. If they persistently appear, and the system still seems to function OK and you can still do your work, just ignore it. If it wasn't anything serious in the first place (Which it usually isn't), they eventually go away.
DISCLAIMER: Ignoring those errors probrably isn't the best advice, but it works for me. Use at your own risk!
duke_fan
03-14-2004, 08:51 PM
The reason this advice is given is because it's often faster and more economical to reinstall the OS than track down the source of the problem. In many business environments, re-imaging the machine is often used whenever the problem can't be solved right off the bat to keep downtime to the minimum.

I find that with Windows, it's usually a good idea to reinstall the OS every 6 to 12 months (even with XP, as my wife has found out with her laptop). The nice thing for me, since I use Linux for everything except gaming, it's a snap to reinstall my copy of Windows 98SE because I don't have to install and configure a dozen productivity applications. Just the basic OS and hardware drivers and I'm done. Then I install my games as I get the hankering to play them rather than try to install them all in one fell swoop. It's worked out pretty well for me.

I recently had the displeasure of installing Windows 98 and then Windows 2000 on my brothers PC. Anyway, with the number of times I had to reboot during the installation process (Around 15 per installation), this seemed appropriate.
you can just click no when windows asks you to reboot, and only reboot after you've installed your last driver

Sounds like XP is a little behind the times. Even with SP2. They need to support DVD+/-RW burning with their built in burner. Oh well. I used Nero to make my backups this time. I think I'll stick with Nero.
EDIT: The reason why I posted my DVD-RW make, was to say that I do have a DVD burner, and MS needs to take note that those who do have them should also be able to use the CD burning wizard.

In every driver version most fixes are nowadays usually for the control center, which is sad.
