View Full Version : Need Help: Game crashes right at the beginning
Hey guys! I was wondering if anybody could help me out with a problem. I just fired up the game for the first time last night. I was making my way through the hospital, and everything was fine until I got to the morgue. As soon as the cutscene starts up, *boom* the game crashes to the desktop. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/brickwall.gif
Don't really know what the problem is, but if anybody could suggest something that would be great. Didn't have time to install the 1.01, so I don't know if that will help or not. here are my specs:
2.53 Ghz P4
512 MB RAM
ATi 9700 Pro running 3.7 Cats
Creative Audigy Gamer
Any replys are much appreciated! http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I am crashing there too, but not only to desktop but whole PC crashes, no-signal to monitor and ...
Well go to the bathroom in first room in first level. Stay there a while and turn with payne. Your pc shoud crash too. If yes, you have the same problem as me.
(It also crash in cutscene after the first level with cleaners, and in old ragnarock level, where there is some glassy floor on top of some wooden thingy, and in many places in game http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif )
(I think my crashing has something to do with transparent things, like glass in bathroom in first room, orange glassy piece of floor in old ragnarock, and when I am near cars, it definately crash, maybe because the reflections on cars http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif )
Solution :
Use windowed mode in those sections of game where game crashes. Press right ALT-enter and you should go into windowed mode. When the game chashes with error 'not enough video memory' while switching to windowed mode, you have to set texture detail to medium. Also switch to windowed mode before loading level.
Other solution, go to your ati directx settings and turn off compressed textures. However it does not work allways.

if running under WinXP try running the game in Win98 compatibility mode, if that doesn't work, then see if your motherboard has an integrated soundcard. if it has try to use that instead of the Audigy and take the Audigy out from the motherboard. If you don't have an integrated soundcard then try to put the soundcard to an other PCI slot in the motherboard...

This is funny, because a few months ago my computer manufacturer recommended I do the exact same thing when I reported crashes to the desktop in Splinter Cell, BF 1942, and Half-Life. What does switching the soundcard to another PCI slot actually do?

it changes the IRQ of the card, so it can remove IRQ conflicts if there are some. Sometimes windows ignore BIOS's (correct) IRQ settings and sets IRQ to some other number... but it is rare nowdays and new motherboard drivers fixs it.
