Don't be sorry about putting your skills into mace. If you manage to get lucky enough to get the Immortal King's set, you'll want your skills in mace as a mace is one of the IK set pieces. Don't forget you can always trade with other people or beg, heh, create a game called "Bring IK" for example. They may want something in return, maybe gather up a few runes, perfect gems etc for trading.

Or you can make friend with higher level people and hope they're generous, surprisingly, alot of players in this game are very generous and will simply give you stuff. Alot want to trade.

My Wind Druid is now level 60 (maybe 1 or 2 more). He's really doing well. I completed Nightmare (almost). I am holding off on Baal in NM until I get as close to level 70 as possible before I enter Hell difficulty.

I was doing Travincal Council Member/Mephisto runs today with my barbarian.

I have a few perfect Topazes right now and am debating if i should go ahead and put them in a helm and/or chest piece. I have been out of diablo 2 for so long I hardly know what is good anymore ever since 1.10 I stopped, I liked the necro from 109 but in 110 he is almost useless, his ironmaden had a "feature" to it they they took out, if you had a highlevek blood golem (110% life stealing) and 300 - 900 ironmadien, you where immortal because the golem would heal you but cant die, what used to happen is when the iron golem gets hit from a cursed monster/player that damage ironmadend does is supost to heal the blood golem making him almost invenible, because unless you take him down in 1 hit you will die, but in 110 they removed this or weakened this effect making the IM/BG mancers useless

^ I was reading about that. It seems Iron Maiden is now useless (at least once you get to Hell Difficulty) and I should rather be investing in Amplify Damage. That's yet another reason why I probably need to start over with mine.

I want to do the Iron golem route. Not sure what else I will need, though.

3 of the same kind transmute into one of the next higher quality. So three chipped rubies will become one flawed ruby, three flawed will become one normal, and three normal will become one perfect.

Also, 3 rejuv potions become one full rejuv. I usually collect rejuv potions in the first act then transmute them all in the second once I get my cube so I have plenty of full rejuv's for the 4th spot in my belt, they come in handy in emergencies. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif (they are also good to instantly healing your merc when he gets in a tight spot)

This time around, I've kept the archer from act one, and she's leveled everytime I have.

The best merc to get is the one from Act 2 (Normal , not NM or hell). He boosts your defenses.

You can heal your merc two ways, you can drag a health/antidote/rejuvination potion onto his picture and you'll hear him say "thanks". Rejuv's instantly heal all lost health so they're better for him. The second, and BETTER way to heal a merc, especially in the middle of a battle when you don't have the time to drag and drop... is press SHIFT+1 to 4, you press 1 to 4 to use something in your belt, well, if you press SHIFT + 1 to 4 you'll use that belt item on your MERC instead of you. It's fast and easy. I usually have two rows in my belt with health, I'll give the second row to my merc, use the first for myself. Rejuv's are always in my 4th belt position and for me and my merc with antidotes in my 3rd spot.

Diablo 2, v1.11 has REALLY improved the mercs. They level up alot faster now. The reason why I say Act 2 NORMAL merc is because he has a defensive aura that boosts the defense of everyone in your party and all your summons etc. The Act 2 Nightmare merc that looks the same has a cold aura which freezes the enemies he is attacking. I don't remember what the Hell level Act 2 merc has.

I play a Druid, the act 2 norm merc is perfect. My oak sage boosts my health (and all my summons) and my merc boosts my defenses. Makes for a nice combination.

I was working on my Druid some more, he's level 62 at the moment. I decided to put 1 skill into my poison vine. I wasn't going to as he dies alot, but it's only one point and with equipement I am able to boost him (and the rest of my summons) up to level 4 so what the hell. My druid can now walk through nightmare level with his hurricane and kill everything that comes near. Mercs were significantly improve with the expansion. They even have their own mini-inventories (press the letter O to open it) where you can give them weapons and armor, and they can be resurrected at the henchmen seller when they die.

Quite the contrary. Skeletons got a huge boost with 1.10 which makes the skeleton-oriented necromancer one of the most powerful and safest builds there are.
Remember when you played a necromancer and went to diablo (or any boss for that matter) with a bunch of your skeletons and they'd start to crumble away instantly? Well, that's history. Since 1.10 you can have an army of skeletons with up to 20k hitpoints each.

On the other hand all golems are pretty much useless now. They don't deal nearly enough damage to make any difference in hell difficulty. The only exception is the clay golem, he's just as weak but you can use him as a meat shield AND he is able to slow down enemies which makes him an invaluable skill to have.

I play a Skeleton Necromancer (I'm on Europe non-ladder). He's level 91 (started last year) and great fun to play. I finished hell difficulty all by myself and with the stuff that I have right now I'm able to take down Hell Baal in less than 30 seconds without breaking a sweat.

Other characters that I play:
-A level 91 Ice and Fire Sorceress
-A level 87 Werewolf druid

both have soloed hell as well


Concerning Mercenaries, don't underestimate them. Anyone who doesn't use a mercenary is making his diablo 2 life way harder than it should be (and it certainly is hard since 1.10)
Usually you end up getting an Act 2 Merc. Which one you get depends on what you need since they all have different auras.

Here's a list of what they can get:
Normal and Hell Difficulties:

* Combat - Prayer
* Offensive - Blessed Aim
* Defensive - Defiance

Nightmare Difficulty:

* Combat - Thorns
* Offensive - Might
* Defense - Holy Freeze


For those who didn't know: Mercs don't use up durability on equipment so they actually benefit from ethereal items (improved damage on weapons and defense on armour)

I've been working on a Warebear Druid lately, he's now level 53 I think and in nightmare. I have a pet grizzly for him. Just before I finished normal I was killing most critters with one swat. A couple swats for the really big ones. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I also started a Barbarian.

I am thinking about trying a summoning druid, do something crazy like max out BIRDS http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif, poison creeper, oak sage and grizzly, with maybe 10 points in the wolves (synergies for grizzly).

I done the math and those birds, once they reach level 10, they do over 1000 damage (that's 5 birds with so many pecks per bird and so much damage per peck). It all adds up pretty fast. I have a single player character I have been experimenting with birds, they do more damage than any of the wolves maxxed out. I am beginning to think they may do as much as the grizzly once maxxed out, only the grizzly has synergies and they don't. Birds cannot die either, they're guaranteed a certain amount of pecks they they vanish. I'll experiment and see what I come up with. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

With regard to mercs, I agree that Act 2 Mercs tend to be the best choice, but I have been using an Act 3 Cold Merc and they are great! I imagine once I reach hell and run into more cold immunes I'll want to switch back to an Act 2 merc, but right my Act 3 merc (who can carry a shield, sword, armor, helmet) fires a cold blast which freezes most enemies solid! He blows away many enemies before I can get to them sometimes. He dies alot less as well so I'll probably keep him until Hell, then see how things go there.

For my Sorc, I have an Act 2 merc with an Insight which is perfect, it keeps your mana up there constantly, you can teleport everywhere as your mana never runs out. (great for MFing)

How did you calculate those 1000 damage points? I checked the tables and I don't see any way how the birds could come even close to dealing that amount of damage (in reasonable time that is).

Well, each bird gets a certain amount of pecks, he does a certain amount of damage per peck and there are 5 birds. Now it all isn't instant, but it is guaranteed damage as a bird cannot be killed.

For example, my ravens in single player are at level 11 currently.

I have 5 Ravens that do 12-14 damage PER PECK, they have 22 hits (guaranteed, they cannot be killed). That's 12x22x5 = 1320 minimum damage, or 14x22x5 = 1540 maximum damage from all 5 birds when they use up all their pecks. If you're attacking a boss you will have all 5 birds pecking him at once until their pecks are used up... you keep respawning the ravens and you'll do alot of damage over time. I can imagine how much once they're level 20.

It'll be interesting anyhow. I know in ACT 1 they kill guys when you start with a single peck. heh But they're weak to start with.

Are you sure about that? If so, than I'll make a pally with cold aura. They're as good as druids with hurricanes. The enemy freezes instantly when they come near.

Yea the Paladin's Holy Freeze is able to freeze cold immune monsters.

I think you're underestimating time a bit. I ran a test with my Werewolf druid to see how fast the ravens attack, which is roughly once per second.
Let's say you max out ravens and manage to get +20 to skills, then you'll have 5 level 40 ravens dealing ~42 damage each.
5 ravens attacking once per second results in 5*42=210 damage per second which is minimal. Monsters in hell regenerate faster than that http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

It's kinda similar to poison damage where the damage display can be misleading. If you read "deals 10000 poison damage over 100 seconds" it means that 10000 damage points are dealt over 100 seconds (effectively 100/second) and not 10000 damage points each second.

Well, I may need to fire the game up shortly to figure it all out.

I'm following the Magic Find/Immortal King barbarian guide from strategy.diabloii.net.

Got everything maxed out except Find Item.

I only have the Immortal King Helm, which I have placed 2 perfect topazes in it already. Managed to get it from the Ice caves in Act 5 on Nitemare. If you want to get some good stuff, I'd suggest the 2nd level icey caves, like below crystalline passage and then the one right before the 3 champion guys.

My pal gave me a gull Dagger (100% Magic find) and AndOne gave me another one as well, so I dual wield those when I fight bosses or am using Find Item.

I'll get on the game in a bit and post some more info on my stats. I followed the guide quite religiously though and only gave myself just enough STR required to put on the IK armor.

I have some 40% MF unique gloves and war boots.

I have some 1K defense chainmail and also found some 1500 defense armor but it's ETHEREAL, with 15 durability. ARGH!

Well I started playing yet again. The 1.11 patch adds an entire new part to the game (called "überquest") Taken from Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diablo_II:_Lord_of_Destruction) :

"The new 'Überquest' involves getting the Key of Hate from the Summoner, Key of Destruction from Nilathak and Key of Terror from the Countess, then cubing each of them into a portal to a new sublevel, featuring Lilith (a renamed Andariel), Über Izual, or Über Duriel. These bosses drop body parts, which can be cubed into a portal to Chaos Tristram.

In Chaos Tristram, players fight beefed up versions of all three Prime Evils simultaneously! When all three are dead, the last one killed drops the new Hellfire Torch unique charm. It gives +3 to all skills of a random class, random bonuses to all attributes and all resistances, and 25% chance to cast Diablo's Firestorm attack on striking."

Yes, the keys only drop in Hell Difficulty.

They are random drops, plain white text with the label "Key of Destruction," etc. Not sure if magic find helps in the drops, but it can be dropped on the first time you kill them or it can take 30 or more tries.

I managed to get the countess to drop it on the 3rd try, Summoner on the 30th or so. Niklakth(sp?) dropped it around 10 or so.

Cows isn't how to powerlevel anymore, Blizz put an end to that with 1.10

If you want to power level: Play through Act1 until you're like 10, then do tristram runs until you're like 15, then do tomb (act2) runs until you're about 20, and then cows until you're 25. After that you do Baal runs to level up.

Once you get to level 25 it's actually easier than doing thousands of cow runs (you level faster too).

Besides, IMO they made up for it by adding in the überquest and synergies, not to mention the hundreds of new items, runewords and cube recipies.

I just think it's cool as hell of them for continuing to support such a great (and old) game.

If your sword barb could use a Sword guard executioner sword then I have one for you. It's dammage is 128-219 so it's only an alright sword compared to what's out there. I'd use it myself, still collecting stuff, but it requires two hands and my palladin need a shield.

Barbarians can hold any sword one handed, but yes Lightsabres are one handed weapons.

Oops, just checked, for some reason I was thinking there was a two handed version like there are for many other swords. My paladin uses a lightsabre too, I thought it was the best weapon he could have till someone showed me a much stronger Scepter. Three to all paladin skills and almost twice as much dammage, he coudln't even use it yet; not with his new paladin.

I've only been playing for a few weeks. What I don't understand right now is, is it best to build ladder character or non-ladder? My friend was vague, but he implied that laddered was for people who like to duel?

The Lightsabre is a good Pally weapon, Baranar's Star is good as well. However I prefer a Schaefer's Hammer (+Ohm).

Oh, well for me I just can't stay interested. Once I make it to the end of Act 2 I just give up. I once had someone rush me through to see if the next difficulty would be any more fun.....but it didn't do a thing for me. I also don't find any joy in collecting better and better armour as other players seem to.

Personally I have more fun in RPGs when I have minimal equipment and forced to scrounge. Once I get suited up I lose the sense of accomplishment from fights. You know what I mean? When RPGs put me in prisons and remove all my stuff I nearly fall in love. I'm weird that way....

The Act 2 boss is a real pain in the ass. As far as I know, there's no real trick to beating him. Just make sure you have lots of health potions, run away a lot, and keep chipping away at his health.

I allways cast a town portal the instant I get into tal rasha's tomb room (after you use the staff), have all the health I can carry in my belt, and once I'm about half-way out of health, pop thru the portal, go fill back up, and repeat. Died way too many times trying to slug it out toe-to-toe with that thing. Honestly think it's the hardest boss to beat in the whole game.

As the Necro he is very easy, just make sure you have Blood golem and Iron Maiden, all you have to do is switch make sure when the boss kills your blood golem you make another.

Basically all you are doing here is using the blood golem as a stack of meat, your not depending on him for damage you are depending on iron maiden to do the work.

I've been playing this D2:LoD mod called "Hell Unleashed", it's pretty cool.

It adds a ton of content into the game, and he even runs his own emulated bnet server so you can play online.

I started a Druid a few days ago. He's a changeling :D
I skilled werewolve, lycantrophy as well as the last werewolve attack skill "anger" (I don't know the correct english word since I play the german version). Those 3 skills are all lvl 20, whereas my char is just lvl 59.
Now I'm going for a bit of defense and lvl up the cyclone armor.

I agree that Diablo 2 is essentially all about grinding, but it's grinding done right: easy leveling and easy farming. It takes the chore out of grinding and makes it actually fun.

I couldn't install a few games due to 16-bit installers for example.

Just for some reason my files are getting corrupt preventing me to validate on Bnet.

I installed the game and ran the patch,i even logged on on but got a "server down" message.
After a reboot my install some how ended up b0rked.

Virus and spyware free.
Im going to have do some error checking and degragging later.
Mabey even axe the virus scanner.

Heck the ancient relic even downloads info through vista's game folder.
So apparently it suppose to work.

Well, it works perfect for me on Vista 64-bit. Do you have the newest patch installed? I use the Blizzard store version, digital copy. After I stored my cdkeys there, I can download Diablo 2 + LoD for free. Works flawlessly, first there was a problem for few days with every digital copy, not being able to logon to battle.net, except US East. That was fixed, after that no problems.

Because when launching the game it asks for a cd.

There is a thread on Battle.net support forums saying it's due corrupted gamefiles. Well, I don't know if some of your files are corrupted, I'd do I re-install and try again.

I got 6 points to blessed hammer,9 points to blessed aim and a few points to vigor which are supposed make blessed hammer do more damage.

I got crap gear,but blessed hammer seems about useless to me?

Use an etheral armor and etheral weapon on your merc (they don't degrade on mercs), socket a godly unique for each and you should be ready to go :)

I prefer Act2 mercs personally, you can create etheral runewords and they'll become killing machines.

Anyway,there must be a bug getting later mercs too early.

I ditched my crappy Act5 merc for another Act1 merc when I got to nightmare. Only reason I got rid of my original Act1 merc is because I forgot to ressurect her for so long that she was Lv11 in act5, and therefor useless.

Best mercs are the ones from Act 2, they have auras. Act 2 nightmare gives you holy freeze aura, and that's the dude I've been using. Also, mercs can only use certain weapons - so that's why you can't mix & match.

I would be happy if I would find Herald of Zakarum...

I have two characters. One sorc at lvl 72, thats primarely chain-lightning, secondary cold orb. That one with better gear could maybe do it (but thats my problem - need NM-runs for good gear :D).

Then I have a spear amazon at lvl 60 that does good damage but again, dies to easily. Maybe I should have made javelin instead, but I had a really good spear so figured I´d try.

eww... What are you using, jab/fend? lol I can just imagine the pain of playing something like a spearazon. Imo, the character would be better off as a mule :mryuck:. Unless your planning on making charged strike/fend and/or jab hybrid but even then .. eww. WW polearm/spear barb would be more amusing.;)

P.S what spear? Ariocs, lycanders? if it's a Hone Sundan and you have 3 shaels plus a goreriders, then that would be most interesting. Up the Sundan and you have yourself a 45cb, 60 ias tooth pick with semi good dmg. Throw in a drac's and if you have massive mana leach plus a high dmg charged strike / chain lightning / lightning strike you could probably survive anything apart from ubers or lillith. still it would be better fit for a spear barb with ww. Might merc is a must and crowd control could be a problem. Although a Delirium could fix that.

I did some meph nightmare runs today actually. It worked, but took a long time and I died a lot. I need a maphack or something. :insomnia:

Thing is, when I got to meph he died in a few seconds so that was no problem att all. Problem is these small damn critters that keep killing me as soon as they are 5 or more. If I get one single hit in generally they all die in a nice change of lightning (20-25 adjacent strikes or whatever), but if I miss one im toast.

I dont know what my spear is called, but its 2+ spear skills, 2+ all skills, 120-320 dmg, various added dmgs, life bonuses, resistance (i think) an nomuerous other things. My amazon is pretty dumb without it (I´ve tried with a worse one-handen to get a shield in, but nono). :o

I maxed the chain-lightening skill (last one) and have a lot of the skills that are connected to it. Actually, when theres only one enemy (like meph) I use bolts. They do only like x-1000 dmg or something, but so many hits each time that he dies really fast.

Noticed one problem might be that I have only 400 in defence (stop laughing). If I managed to get that up to a decent level, would it do a lot of difference? Also, my resistance sucks. Only Cold is above 0 in NM.

Yeah, your lack of resistances doesn't help. Especially lightning will hurt you a lot, since the dudes down there use it a lot.

I do meph runs so that first use Waypoint to the Durance of Hate level 2, then go left from the wp, or right, but keeping to that direction. When I've found a good map, I can just save & reload after killing meph and the map stays the same - if good. If it's bad map, so that you have to run a lot to get to meph, I suggest you go "normal" then back to "nightmare" - that way the game regenerates the dungeons.

Also, keeping the mercs gear at a good level is important. I'd get a merc that gives defense aura or the one that gives you damage boost.

The map only stays the same in single player.;) On battle.net it's quite random. I forget if it was clockwise or counter clockwise but for meph runs I just run .. clockwise around the map, always sticking to the outer wall so that I don't miss the lvl 3 stairs. 99% of the time it works VERY well.

Sorry Thriller, I assumed you knew what I was taking about. By the sounds of things, like peoplessi said, you really need resistances. Those little midgets that are killing you are stygian dolls or whatever. Little bone fetishes that corpse explode when you kill them. In fact your probably better off just running past them. They do half fire and half .. physical if I remember correctly, when they explode. So if your fire resistance is in the negatives your REALLY gonna feel the effects.

Defense is secondary to resistances. If your dieing on nightmare meph runs I recommend you do some andarial runs, if you can kill her without dieing you should get some minor equipment that may help you. If your dieing once or more on every run (whether it's meph andy or countess runs) you want to do something different.

Good choice with the charged strike, it is one of the ultimate boss killer skills .. if they aren't lightning immune. ;) do you have one point in dodge, avoid, evade? If you don't have a shield and your resistances suck.. those skills might help. Then again they may get you killed in big crowds when your in hell but whatever.:D A valkyrie could also help you out. My biggest advice, if you have a act 2 merc that's near your lvl with decent equipment is to just stay behind him and let him kill those damn dolls. His resistances should be ALOT better then yours. :)

Also are you in single player or battle.net?
If your on battle.net, join games for rushes and get yourself to hell, rush through hell and start doing baal runs till your around lvl 80+. Along the way, you should get some good items. You most likely won't be able to handle hell alone but at least you should be able to go back to nightmare and do meph runs without too much trouble. With meph you should get some nice stuff.

Ok, so I went for a few baalruns and pumped it up to lvl 67. Also did izual and stuff, so got like 10 points on the "javelin-ligthning"-skill. Found a pretty good javelin as well, and got a shield with atleast 15 all restistance and some stuff. So im now tabbing between javelin/shield and spear.

Still only around 0 in overall resistance, but works really great, and can run thru act4 pretty good.

Some lightning-resist folks have been starting to show up and I didnt really know what to do with them. But then I realized my Jab does like 400-1300 dmg or something with that spear, so I put that as the left skill on the spear tab.

Still woudnt really cut it for Hell, but now I can find some gear atleast. :)

Hit 40 on my Necro earlier today, got SO many drops for an Amazon I decided its time to play my Amazon again :p

Got half of Vidala's set, gloves with +Passive/Magic skills, and a Stag Bow with +1 All Amazon and +1 Bow/Crossbow skills (But I have Vidala's barb so I wont be using it much). I had yellow stag bow (Soul Dart, same as what I have now but with a couple other little buffs with it) but I lost it in the transfer. :( (Server closed)

Damn good for a lv22 at the beginning of Act3 Normal I think :D

Smartest thing would be to pump it upp to level 75 or something first, as I think thats when nightmare baalruns stop beeing great. But, oh well.

In nightmare my resistance where pretty good now. Something like 49-45-32-19. Well, now in Hell they really suck again. :D

Im doing fine on act1, better than I thought, but I think Im going to have huge problems in catacombs where theres crowded and lots of lightning imunities.

Good news is my amazon now rocks at mightmare Meph runs, and I even got +30% speed boots. :cool:

BTW, I found imortal kings waist thingi. It was actually pretty good. How does the whole set look like and is there any point in finding more imortal king stuff for my amazon? Its aimed at like barbarian or something right?

It's aimed at the Barb, like you said. your Amazon would benefit from a combo of the gloves, belt and boot. It would give you increased attack speed a large bonus to strength, some resists, 40% run/walk an attack rating boost, 25% magic find and some other stuff. If you want to complete the set and make a concentration/whirlwind barbarian or a similar build while using the immortal kings set, be warned that the Armor is REALLY hard to find. though it is purchasable for an Um rune. Which can be gotten from a forge. Although I don't think the set is worth a hell forge. Reason being that it is not very good on 8 player hell games.

The set looks pretty dope, you barb will have all black armor, a big maul, and a set aura. The aura doesn't do anything, it just makes your character have a shine around him.

To answer your question no, it is not worth "looking" for more immortal kings stuff, reason being that while you continue through the game, you will most likely run into more immortal kings set pieces any way. Most likely the gloves, boots, belt, and occasionally the maul and helm.

You also said that your resistances are not too spiffy, the boots, glove, and belt combo would not really help that out, as it only offers about 28% to fire and 31 to lightning, which should all be on your belt. Natalya's boots plus Laying of the hands gloves and a dual resistance belt would probably offer more.

Bumping this becuase I have a problem. I made a new Amazon and at lvl 50 its already kicking nightamares ass with Titans javelin and well over maxed res.

However, Im still only lightning and have a few options:

- Max out Fend (and maybe Penetrate for attack rating). I got last Ama up to lvl 11 or something and it still sucked pretty bad even at Act one... Any point in trying to max it?

- Max out Plague Javelin for poison damage. Im thinking I could get it up to atleast 1000ish dmg.. But probably over like 8-10 seconds. :(

- Going all lightning and do it with style. This would mean max two other lightning skills (chain lightning and some useless one) as each level gets me +10% on both primary skills. It would rock, and probably leave a few points for more passive skills. But I´d be completely useless against lighnting imunes. :(

Magic Finding is pissing me off.

When i was playing normal around level 30 with %14 MF,sets and unique's were dropping like fly's.

Did it not accept your CD KEY when you first registered the game or did you already download it and its not accepting the CD key?

After you download the game,you have to use a new 2nd key they issue.

I have a question. Is there any good Fireball/Chain Lightning Sorceress build? You know, like the Sorcerer in Diablo 1 :)

The only ones I found are either full Lightning, Fire/Cold, Lightning/Cold with few variations of main spells.
