Not sure if this has been discussed before but what role, if any, is remedy gonna have in the production of the movie.

I'm just asking because I don't want to see the Max Payne name insulted by some low budget, straight to rentals game to movie conversion. I've yet to see a good movie based on a game and this worries me.

is it certain that there's going to be a movie? i heard the rights were sold, but that was basically it. i'd say the question is irrelevant unless there's an official announcement.

I can't remember where I saw it but I am quite sure there is definitely a movie coming sometime in the undefined future.

I have to admit that the conversions Games->Movies are a total failiur, example: Super Mario, Mortal Kombat, and Tomb Raider, among others, ive saw most of them and i think this kind of conversion is a mistake, but i'de like to saw Metal Gear Solid in a movie cus the storyboard is the best I ever saw in a god damm game! But I honestly cant see MP in a movie...

hehe, anyone remember the wing commander movie?! that was damn great images/icons/wink.gif

what about final fantasy? i kinda liked it....

scorpion

final fantasy had nothing to do with the game

Yeah I forgot Final Fantasy, I've never played the games but I quite liked the movie. Wing Commander was corny but adequately entertaining. I think if the Max Payne movie adopts a true film noir style then it should be alright.

I liked Resident Evil.

The rights for Max Payne were sold about a month after the first game's release (as were licenses for making action figures). And now that a second game is on the way, it's almost guaranteed that a movie and/or action figures are on the way.

i heard that Dimension Films and Abandon Entertainment have signed a deal with Shawn Ryan, creator-executive producer of FX series "The Shield," to adapt the shoot-'em-up videogame "Max Payne".

The reason why the other game to movie projects failed is because the games lacked all apparent story. With max payne and definatey Deus Ex, the movie should be fine.

On a side note, I've always enjoyed the Super Mario Bros. movie. While it's total crap as a movie, it's an interesting take on the Super Mario universe. Mortal Kombat 1 was okay as well (didn't make me cringe nearly as much as total shite like Tomb Raider does) and I kind of liked Resident Evil, too (well, parts of it, not the whole movie).

It is hard because there are some things that made the game great that just cannot be carried over to the silver screen

So if there is a Max Payne movie coming out do you think the actor of Max Payne 2 will be in the movie then? Or will they get a person who looks like Sam Lake to be in the movie? Is the movie gonna be about the first or second game? Or a little bit of both...? Damn I have so many questions!!!

The Baskinator
07-11-2003, 10:15 PM
Yes, many questions, none of which we can answer with any degree of certainty.

But I can tell you, by simply using logic, that making the first MP movie about the events taking place in the second game would be a very stupid idea.

Kevin's girl
07-13-2003, 12:23 AM
No I was saying that the movie might show parts from the first game (then if the second game is already out) go right into parts of the second game instead of making two movies. So that way the story line in the movie would keep moving.

Okay? But no one knows.

there have been many video game movies but only few have been good,
heres my list.
1.mortal kombat
2.tomb raider
3.resident evil
4. wing commander
5.final fantasy:the spirts within
5.mortal kombat 2
6.street fighter
7. super mario bros.
thats all i can remeber but i think there were more.
anyway video games have been getting better with tomb raider 2 (comes out today) and resident evil 2 being made, it shows that bigger budgets are finnaly are being gived to video game movies, so when max payne finnaly comes out, like i hope it does, it will hopefully be done right, since it should get just the right amount of money to do it.

I'd say all of those are crap, but Resident Evil was surprisingly good, like maybe 6,5-7 out of 10 for that genre. Besides you get to see that girl naked, ha-ha...

Mortal Kombat has cool theme song, apart from that it's rubbish. There's also a Double Dragon movie I think, with Dacascos, which is a cool fighter, but always have b-roles (owns in Le Pacte Des Loups and Drive though)

Street Fighter is the best game->movie ever made. It is so unbelievable crap and stupid, that it's hillarious. The movie always makes me laugh hysterically images/icons/wink.gif

I liked the Super Mario movie for some reason. I dunno. It was all weird and kinda different of what you would've thought.

I am getting the impression that the people behind the Max Payne franchise (including movie) have James McCaffrey in their sights for everything now. It makes sense for the voice of Max to be the face in both game and movie, especially since he's an actor of (some) note anyway.

People expect too much from movies based on video games, that's why they bomb.

That and also that most of the general movie viewing public don't play games so they don't have any idea that the movie is actually based off one.

The trouble is, I think, that they try to make a movie that is only based on the game so it's not the exact same thing again, which might be boring for the gamers in the audience. What this acutally does, though, is alienate those same gamers who don't want to see their game changed so much. Everyone *but* the gamers is the target audience, meaning that Street Fighter, for example, was intended to be viewed by the same people who watch Friends...you can see where I'm going with this one.

The trouble is that 90% at least, of moviemakers in the USA or Hollywood are no-talent clowns, like that idiot making XXX, F&F or that guy making Charlie's Angels movies, etc. etc. The fact that most games have a crappy excuse for a story doesn't help. If Max Payne was really dark it could be good, something like done by Irvin Kershner (Empire Strikes Back, Robocop 2)

And on the topic of games -> movies, the "Streetfighter 2 - Animated Movie" anime is kind of nice.

I generally cringe when I hear about a game to movie conversion - but I cringe more when I hear about movies being turned into games.

I've yet to play a decent game based on a movie.

The Final Fantasty movie was OK. Heck, I even quite liked Tomb Raider 1 (even if the best bit of the film is right at the start). Taken at face value it was a decent enough film to waste a couple of hours with. Even the mario brothers film amused me.

On the whole I think that the game -> film conversions are improving gradually. Partly because they are being more selective about the games they are converting, and partly because of the cartoon -> film conversions we are seeing.

If they keep the atmosphere of Max Payne close to the one created in the game it could work very well.

While it isn't as cool and smooth as it could be, it works nicely.

And yeah, especially the end of the Scorpion vs. Cage fight was bad.

Haha, Mortal Kombat 2 is in bottom 100 at IMDB, 0wned...

If you wonder if Mortal Kombat is any good you can do with simple math. Why was the game popular? Blood and violence. The movie is PG-13... STEP AWAY!!! Fights are crappy, characters/story is crappy... sigh... let's pray Max Payne will be better.
