One thing that bothered me in the original Max Payne is the pronunciation of the mobsters' names. Not only do the names sound made up, but even if they did exist they're said incorrectly.

Vinnie Gognitti: Max keeps saying "Gog-neeti." Since "gn" is prounounced like "ny" it should be more like "Gohn-yeeti."

Angelo Punchinello: Max says "Punch-in-ell-o." In Italian, "chi" is pronounced like "key," as in chianti. So it should be "Poon-kin-elllo."

I know this is nitpicky but it pulled me out of the reality of the game every time I heard the names.

Disclaimer: I'm not Italian, nor do I speak Italian, but I know enough to know that the names aren't prounounced correctly.

All of the names in Max were pronounced exactly like how they would be said in real life in america. What is technically correct in Italy and the way it might be pronounced in NYC is 2 diffrent things.

Vinnie Gognitti: Max keeps saying "Gog-neeti." Since "gn" is prounounced like "ny" it should be more like "Gohn-yeeti."<font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">And that's the way it is pronounced in the Italian version of the game.

Angelo Punchinello: Max says "Punch-in-ell-o." In Italian, "chi" is pronounced like "key," as in chianti. So it should be "Poon-kin-elllo."<font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">In the case of Punchinello, in the Italian version his name was modified to "Puncinello" and pronounced "poon-chee-nello".
I'd even dare to say that the Italian version is spelled right and the English version is spelled wrong, because "Puncinello" (without the H) is a variation of "Pulcinella", the classic comedy character of Naples; "Punchinello", on the other hand, is just a spelling variation to obtain the correct sound if the name is pronounced according to the English phonetic rules.

I don't think anyone cares one way or the other.

Where I am (NJ NY metro area) I know tons of Italians, and even they pronounce their own names wrong. It's just how it is in an English speaking country.

I don't know a thing about the Italian language. So if Max said those names wrong it didn't bother me one way or the other. But since he's in New York and were assuming he's from New York wouldn't he have more of a New York accent? I only noticed an accent once in the whole game. It was in the prologue for Part 1 when Max came home to find out someone broke into his house (and found his wife and baby girl killed) The phone was ringing so he answered it and told the person to: "call 911." He said "call" in a New York accent! He he he. Does anybody agree with me or does anybodt think I'm weird for posting this? Can somebody please reply to my post?!!

I'll reply: What's the use of replying to every god-forsaken thread on the MP board without actually saying anything new?

At least I say something without abashing people. My god.

I'm not bashing anyone, I'm just criticizing the way you started out on this board, replying to just about every thread as you read them. It's common courtesy to first read all the recent threads, so you'll know what people are talking about, so you won't have to do a n^infite number of posts, some contradicting each other, as you find out more about what people were talking about.

Alright. images/icons/smile.gif
But does anybody know about the whole New York accent I was talking about earlier? Should Max have more of a New York accent or not? I was just curious images/icons/smile.gif
