View Full Version : where did you get the idea of bulletime?
I was looking through MPI and I realised that bullet-time has the same concept as what they did in the maitrix (doging bullets/kicking ass in slow motion) and then I asked myself ,"did bullet-time get inspired by the maitrix?"
thats where you come in, Im going to ask you ,"did bullet-time get inspired by the maitrix?"
I'd say definitely not, I know that Remedy did NOT base it off the Maitrix. I can say that with 100% certainty.
But I have asked myself if it was based off the Matrix... in that case I don't think it has. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif
then what was it based on?
There a some movies that had it before Matrix and alot of "Blood Opera" movies had similar slow motion scenes.
I'd say that it was heavily based off those "Blood Opera" movies as Max Payne as a whole was.
I would say the idea came from the movies of John Woo [Something like this]

Bullet Time was implemented to the game before The Matrix's script was ready.
And yes, Max Payne is inspired from John Woo movies.

The term "bullet-time" wasn't created in Max Payne, it became popularized when the Matrix came out. Of course Max Payne's "bullet-time" only reallly resembled Matrix's because of the slow motion...it was obviously more John Woo inspired, I'd say.
And it's spelled Matrix, BTW. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Still, MP1 had more than its fair share of matrix influences http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif

And the term "Bullet Time" is registered to Remedy/Take2, right? http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif Not Warner Brothers.

No, the movie killer doesn't have any bullet time effects in it. It has lots of slow-motion though, but that has little to do with bullet time (other than the fact that when shooting with a bullet time set up you can control the timescale of the shot, so you can achieve slow-motion). For Killer they just shot at high speeds for some shots and decreased the frame rate at post for some.
actually i believe maxpayne1 was being developed like a year or two before matrix so i think its a idea remedy jsut came up with.

For the videogame world, yes. That's why it's called "Focus" in the Enter the Matrix game, they couldn't use the term. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Actually, to correct myself, it's just Take2. Neither Remedy nor 3DR retains stuff like that - it all went when the IP rights were sold to Take 2.

ok ok j , *admits got pwned* I knew what I meant tho lol.
The John Woo films were an influence on the slow motion side of things tho..
Quoting from IGN's interview with petri:
IGN: Where did the idea for Bullet Time originate?
Petri: The original ideas on Bullet Time date back all the way to '97-'98 when we started working on the first Max Payne game. We had the idea of creating a game where the gameplay would be strongly influenced by John Woo's Hong Kong action movies, like Hard-Boiled or Killer. Even in the early prototypes for the game we were thinking that slow-motion would have to be an integral gameplay element since it was simply so cool to run down a corridor with two berettas firing in slow-mo.
Hard-boiled fantastic film too. Go chow yun fat, go!

^ wow! I remember the preview story in PC Gamer way the hell back. I can't believe the time has flown by so fast. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/redface.gif
They had a pic of Max with bullet time in the subway station. Probably one of the more famous pisc from a game I'd wager. I think it was drawn or something, though and I don't think the bullet time was accounted for in the pic. I think it looked like they took a pic of him shootdodging real time. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif
I remember back then they were talking about multiple layers of clothes, like a coat, tie, shirt, etc in the preview. It's really cool to look back and see how games have recently changed. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif
