Gamespot gives lowest score ever

And for good reason too...

http://www.gamespot.com/pc/driving/bigrigsotrr/review.html

It's hard to imagine that shit like this could ever get published, It looks like the developers gave up after a week of development. You have to see the videos to truely understand how bad this game is, it's hillarious. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/nelson.gif

Today, that changed.

I want that game just for the hilarity factor.

That review was hilarious.

Reminds me of the PC Gamer of the worst thing ever to happen to the Build engine: Extreme Paintbrawl. Can't find it online, but the review was sooo bad the lead programmer wrote in to apologize and explain they had to get it out the door in something like six days.

Looked for the review online but no luck.

I have a feeling that the publishers didn't even bother to look at it. It's like they just grabbed whatever build they could find, pressed it, boxed 'em, and shipped them out. According to Gamespots review, the game doesn't even have sound effects for christ sakes, http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

As for the game's sound design, there isn't any. There are literally no sound effects in Big Rigs. The only sounds that present themselves at all are a few unpleasant, looping techno tracks, and on a midrange PC, we couldn't even get them to play.

This is even funnier then their review of Gods and Generals (http://www.gamespot.com/pc/action/godsgenerals/review.html).

truck going down the road, starts to cross over bridge: then *poof* it disappears. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

awesome collision detection: there is none. he drives through a "city" that look like static polygons with hardly a trace of textures on them. but by driving "through" a city, he doesn't drive down the city streets, he drives *through* the buildings. holographic cities! sweet! http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/brickwall.gif

wait, let's go on top of the mountains then drive into the air-we can do that too!

"We strive is to provide our clients with best of gaming technologies and cut their development expenses, allowing them to concentrate on product rather than on technology hustles of development. We are capable of doing large scale sophisticated technological projects, utilizing the best technologies and guarantee customer satisfaction.

We combine stong management ( with our Santa Monica, CA based headquarters ) with superb creative, yet non expensive development teams in Russia. This allows our clients to cut development expenses 3-5 times comparing to cost of local European or US development team or employees. At same time we provide instant feedback to our clients, thanks to our management offices in Los Angeles and London."

Ya, I thought he made some good points. Same kind of crap has been going on for years in all kinds of industries. The problem with software is that it is even more difficult to determine it's junk before buying it than most things. Unlike a pair of shoes, you rarely get the chance to try it out in the store before you buy it.

I realize that almost nobody here would get stuck with a lemon like this, because they would be looking at reviews and checking for a demo before buying, but uninformed parents and grandmas buying games for their grandchildren are the ones allowing companies like this to turn a profit on this crap.

Pretty sure Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 did. Don't know about any others.

Ocarina of time
Soul Calibur on dreamcast

can't find that fourth one but the next closest is a tie between Halo and Metroid Prime, each with a 9.7

Nope, next closest is Perfect Dark with a 9.9

BTW I hate Zelda. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/redface.gif

The only perfect 10 I know of is Zelda: Ocarina of Time for the N64. I don't understand how it got a perfect score. Controls are horrible and sound effects are annoying. The game is so tough I can't even get one goddamn weapon. I haven't even seen ONE enemy yet.

I agree, Ocarina of time had to have been reviewed by its fanboys in the gaming rags, A link to the past was easily better and had a better story.

I don't mean to be an ass, but it seems that adventure/platform 3dr person games aren't your cup of tea.

This is the second great game you have put down this week because you couldn't play them well. I don't think that's the developers fault.

If you weren't able to aim well in Half-Life 2 because of your own abilities, would you rate the game lower? Well, it's obivous you would, and you would be wrong.

Hmm, OOT is tied for my favorite game ever, it's really very good. You seem to just not be able to get far, so I'll help you out.

(mild spoiler warning)

Crawl through a hole in the wall in the Kokiri Village to get into the training ground, where you get a sword. You can buy a shield at the shop in the village. Once you have these the guard will let you in to see the Deku Tree, where you'll find enemies.

perfect 10

This is the problem with gaming journalism. Every publication wants to be loved by the publishers, so they throw ridiculously high scores around. A perfect score says one thing: the game is perfect (and the reviewer is arselicking). Surely everyone could name several flaws in such games (which instantly makes the score illegitimate)?

You need room to maneuver, if you award a perfect score to a game then what do you do next week when a much better game comes along? Frankly, I find all of those perfect scoring games dull, which just goes to show how unobjective these reviewers are.

I don't think a 10 score means "totally flawless in every way", it means "good enough to round up to 10". If you can't ever award a 10 what's the point of having a 1-10 scale?

It's arguable. Many movie critics use a four-point scale allowing for halfs, and starting at 0, so it's actually out of nine. It's not uncommon for critics to award several films 4/4 throughout the course of the year, and no one questions their credibility for it. Roger Ebert explains it by saying that the ratings are absolute, not relative, and shouldn't be used to compare two movies. Four out of four just means the movie is really fricking good, not the best movie ever. Ten out of ten does not mean utterly flawless, it means closer to ten than nine, and therefore really fricking good.

There is no such thing as a truly objective reviewer. A reviewer's job is to write and articulate his opinion, nothing more. Of course it may not agree with your opinion, but that doesn't make him an idiot, it means he has different tastes than you. Of course it's entirely subjective! I'm more surprised by the fact that you expect anything different.

It's a single piece of paper. It's about a 6x6 inch (one sided) square. Has installation instructions - and it say you have to have DirectX 8.1, believe it or not.

Does it say "18 Wheels of Thunder" on the box?

Yup. My hand covers part of that in the pic I posted.

Actually, the system requirements are posted on the bottom of the box. They're quite funny. This actually what it says, I didn't change anything.

Minimum Requirements:

Windows XP/98
Pentium III 1Ghz
64 MB RAM
DirectX 8.1 video card w/32 MB RAM
Sound Card
300MB free space on Hard Disc Drive

Recommended System Requirements:

Windows XP/98
Pentium III 1.5Ghz
128 MB RAM
3D card with 64 MB video memory that supports DirectX 8.1
Sound Card
300MB free space on Hard Disc Drive

When I get to the office tomorrow, I'll scan the back cover of the box. That's pretty funny, too. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

All I can say is this game is not even 10% finished. My mate went to the bother of buying it off US ebay, this thing is a colecters item it will go down in history as the worst game ever,Yes its even worse than ET and thats saying somthing.

If your ever in a shop and think "it cant be that bad after all daikatana wasnt as bad as people made out" it is just walk away all I can say avoid! unless you want to keep it on is a shelf as a bit of history or as somthing to bring up at lan partys.

Funny thing is, if it wasn't for the review and the video posted by Gamespot, I probably would have never been interested. After watching that video "review" they have, I just felt compelled to buy it. Even after their review said "Please do not play this game. We cannot stress this enough", I still felt compelled to buy it - mostly for a the "train wreck" aspect of it all.

So after Gamespot seemed to go out of their way to tell people not to play the game, that's exactly what made me want to. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Oh, and ET wasn't the worst 2600 game - there's TONS worse - I mean truly bad. ET was bad, there's no doubt, but it's by far nowhere near the worst.

I thought it was fairly established that Joe no longer has the need to buy games. Seems he knows enough people in the Biz to get freebies 10x over.

This is true, but I could not find anyone at Activision who would even respond to my queries about it, let alone someone who even KNEW about it. There's no Activision logo on the box anywhere, despite being in the "Activision Value" line. I wrote 'em asking if there were posters or something along those lines. I thought it would be great to have a poster for this game. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

So, this one was paid for. It wasn't a freebie - although I tried to go that route. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

OK, so I decide to put the CD in the drive. It has an autorun file, an autorun icon, the readme, and a single install file, which contains the program, too. There is a DirectX directory, but that's *IT* on the CD. Perhaps they're holding back the good stuff until Big Rigs: Collector's Editon, or "Big Rigs II: Electric Boogaloo".

So I put the CD in the drive. I get this exciting screen:

Actually, to be flat out honest, that's just where it ended up. Before I put it on the shelf, there was an empty spot between Daikatana & Hunting Unlimited (the same people who did DN:MP).

Anyway, it was only after I put it in the empty slot that I saw it was next to Daikatana, and took them both out for the pic I posted in the other thread with Xenophage and them. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

It's funny how the screens on the back of the box look nothing like the ones in the actual game.

I also find it funny that is says there’re only four courses in the game, while Gamespot had said that there were five in their review copy but only four of them would work.

I had to laugh really hard today. I was talking to a friend of mine at another company who actually bought Big Rigs FOR REAL. He apparently used to work at a trucking company before his current job, and he bought it because he saw it on the shelf and thought it would look cool from the box (which is another problem too - as the box is totally lying).

I really had to lay into him and tell him about the fact that he now owns by far the worst thing ever released by anyone anywhere.

I'm having a few problems with this product:
First and foremost, my opponent in the races never moves. If I try to run into him, I go straight through him...and actually I've been having trouble with that aspect too. Whenever I drive into anything my truck passes right through it. Even bridges...I can't seem to drive across them, I just sink right through them. I'm also having trouble with the fact that I can drive right up walls and off the map. And going on reverse, I can go infinitley fast and stop on a dime. I do not believe thats very realistic. Also, the back of your box promises Police Roadblocks, but I didnt see one Police car in my entire experience with this game. If you could help me that'd be great because I'm a fan

But when I press submit it says theres an error and the page cant be found. DAMN!

ET gained notoriety not so much because it was a poorly made game but because of Atari's poor business strategy at the time of its release. Snopes.com has a good write-up (http://www.snopes.com/business/market/atari.asp) about it.

As for Big Rigs, this game is up definitely up there with eXtreme Paintbrawl (http://www.pcgamer.com/reviews/archives/review_2004-04-01.html) in the "So bad they're good!" category.

According to Wikipedia, this was a pre-alpha of a "proper" game called Midnight Racing, which suffered as a direct result of the fact that everyone who bought it quickly realised this fact. The game thus wasn't winner :p

Sooo... did the company that released Big Rigs just rip off the code during development and try to sell it, because they couldn't write anything themselves? And then issue a demi-backsided patch that was the best they could come up with? Hmm... ;)

Huh. I remember the box from the EB at the mall. Thought it might be a cool budget game. Never though about buying it though. Now I regret that.....

I don't know if any of you have seen this, but I like the review that Armake21 did:

I wish the Angry Nintendo Nerd would give this a few minutes. Could be the next Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.

Would be nice, but with all the reviews that already exist of it, I don't think it is nessessary. Also, I think this game is too new for the Nerd to touch. "He's gonna take you back to the PAST", not "A few years ago" :p

I must also admit, I am getting a little sick of the Nerd. Not so much his videos, but his fans. I'm a HUGE fan, but a lot of his fans on YouTube call every other reviewer a "AVGN" ripoff. I can't stand that! I drink and scream at videogames, but I've been doin that since before I heard of the Nerd.

The story has nothing to do with Big Rigs, just funny to see it referenced in a story about Project Gotham Racing for the 360.

If there was a Big Rigs for the 360, what would the achievements be?

"You're Winner!" - Beat opponent truck, 200 points. ;)

You should get an achievement for losing a race.

^Actually that's impossible. You see, the bots doesn't move. With the patch (were they move) they stop right before they cross the finish-line.

Yeah, I think that was his point. Like, it'd be challenging and difficult to lose a race... so you should get an achievement for that.
