View Full Version : Max Payne 2 Physics Engine

As we all know, Max Payne 2 will be using the Havok physics engine. This means much more realistic gameplay. What kinds of things will this new engine be able to do that Max Payne 1 wasn't able to do? When I think of great physics, I think of Metal Gear Sold 2. That game used some of the best physics I've ever seen. Will Max Payne 2 inherit most of the properties seen in MGS2? Also, being the fact that MP2 will have better graphics, levels, and physic engine.... how much load will this put on the CPU/etc? Max Payne didn't need a beast of a machine to run. Many people who plan on playing Doom 3 will need to get new systems. All this info makes me wonder. Perhaps a keen individual out there would be so kind as to fill all of us in.

Wait wait wait... Do you mean instead of on a console? Yes the Havok engine is PC exclusive (as far as I know).

Will Max Payne 2 inherit most of the properties seen in MGS2?<font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">As far as I know, Metal Gear Solid II's gameplay is not based on physics. You shouldn't draw comparisons just because both games happen to have physics. MGS is about stealth, while Max Payne is about gunplay.

Just by looking at the site I can see that there are quite a few PS2 and XBox games that'll be using it, as well as the console ports to MP2 (If there are going to be ports) and HL2.
I am very interested... Will we be able to play Max Payne 2 on older systems, or we have to upgrade our machines?

You can pretty much double the requirements from Max Payne 1 I assume. Something like 800MHz, GF3 64MB, 256MB RAM etc. Of course it'll all depend on what standards you set to be able to enjoy the game, most games will run at less, but play like hell.
Claws
08-05-2003, 08:36 AM
It's still the same engine at its core, so the requirements shouldn't be too steep (Not Doom3, HL2, or Deus Ex2 steep).
FullMetalJacket
08-05-2003, 09:08 AM
HL2 won't be steep at all. A mid-range system from 1999 will be able to run it, though of course it would end up looking like the first game. images/icons/tongue.gif
DX2 is supposed to be very steep, but that's mainly because the Unreal Warfare engine is a system hog in any game but UT2003....
And Doom3's not out till next year, so no one should be worried about that anyway.
And Max2 might have the same engine at its core, but it doesn't look like a two-year-old game. images/icons/grin.gif It looks far better than any game that's currently out, plus the facial skins are more realistic than those of HL2. Plus it has lip-synch this time around. images/icons/grin.gif

And Max2 will be out on PC a little before the console versions, and I for one am very glad, especially since we PC users got f*cked over, having to wait to get Splinter Cell until it had been on Xbox for four months....and Knights of The Old Republic isn't due out till October-ish....and hell, we're STILL waiting for Halo... images/icons/rolleyes.gif

^ I feel your pain FMJ. I feel it. But Halo will be out in late september, Kotor will actually be out in middle november, and I have beaten Splinter Cell five times.
Now that I think about it....
-Halo is a cool PC game...Microsoft buys Bungie...We dont see Halo for FOUR years.
-KOTOR is a cool game...Microsoft gives loads of money to BioWare...Kotor becomes Xbox exclusive for four months and counting.
-Splinter Cell was origionally for Xbox, so I cant whine about that one.
Microsoft really IS a pain in the ass. graemlins/brickwall.gif

For example, kind of memory and the amount, hard drive size, cpu speed, graphics card/video card. All these things make up your computer and without them, you wouldn't be able to chat here on the forums. Anyways, games always do look better on the PC, assuming you have all the latest hardware. I do like console systems, however, I have always perfered my custom made computer as my pride and joy over any console system.

Is THIS (http://asia.cnet.com/reviews/hardware/desktops/0,39001725,39006802p,00.htm) your computer? If it is, then it looks like it'll be good enough to me. Although I have to wonder about the integrated video card, would 16MB of video ram be good enough? I dunno.
And yeah PC is the way to go, your missing out on a lot of great mods and extras if you get the console version.

If MP2 uses Havoc physics engine there will be some sweeeet bullettimes. And remedy, I DEMAND that you put lots and lots and lots and lots of little stuff around the tables and such. So as I blast a guy with shotgun I can watch him fly on bullettime over the table and I can see smashing glasses, flying beer cans and stuff like this.

Hmm, I wonder how cpu heavy this physics engine is. They can't really put physics on every damn thing, it would be a strain I'd think. Well dunno, might not be.

biXen: yes, havok physics definitively eats cpu power, you can't just model anything at full detail. I am guessing they will be stressing the characters on this regard, don't think they will apply it that much to the objects in the level...

^ I did a Google search for "Dell Dimension 2300" and that was one of the first results it came up with. images/icons/smile.gif
If you want to check your PC's specs the only way I know how to do it would be to click on the start menu, go to programs, accessories, system tools, then click on system information. From there click on tools, then direct x diagnostic tool, under the system tab there should be info on your processor and memory (ram). The display tab should give you some info on your video/graphics card (you can also do this by right clicking your desktop, select properties, and then click 'advance' in settings), and the sound tab should tell you some information sound card. Tou can check your hard drive by going into my computer and right clicking ( C: ) (if your hard drive is C: ) then selecting properties.
There are many others ways (and probably easier ways) to check these things though. graemlins/doh.gif

Thanks Kev_Hectic! That helped me out a lot!
I guess we won't be able to know the requirements for Max Payne 2 until later...
But I was wondering anyway if my computer could play the first Max Payne on it.
This is what I found out about the machine. I hope this is helpful.
Processor: Intel (R) Pentium (R) 4 cpu 1.80Ghz
Memory: 254 MB RAM
Page file: 173 MB used, 452MB available
Direct X Version: Direct X 8.1
Intel (R): Extreme Graphics Controller
Sound Name: SoundMAX Digital Audio
Thats what I found but of course there was a lot more too. I just didn't know what half of it ment. Now how would I know if my computer could support the new Physics Engine?
Again, real sorry... images/icons/smile.gif
Kev_Hectic
08-10-2003, 11:06 PM
^ It should be able to run the first Max Payne just fine. I don't see why it couldn't? I'm looking at the back of the Max Payne case and the requirements are:
- Anywhere from a 450mhz to 700mhz processor.
You have a 1.80ghz processor. (1.80ghz = 1800mhz)
- 96mb to 128mb of ram. You have 256.
- 16mb to 32mb video card. Yours is a 16MB video card.
So yeah, it should run. I don't know how you can tell if your computer is going to run Max Payne 2. Your going to half to wait till one of the Remedy people say something about it.
Sorry about derailing this thread of topic by the way images/icons/tongue.gif
^I highly doubt MP1 would run properly on that machine. It might start, but it's most likely slow as hell.
My advice: Either get a new gfx card or stick with the console versions.
Kev_Hectic
08-11-2003, 06:02 AM
I dunno, Max Payne runs on my shitty celeron 466, with 256mb's of ram and 32mb geforce 2 card. Not smoothly, but I still found it to be playable.
But I could be wrong about Kev girl's computer, It doesn't seem to be made for gaming. It has an integrated video card and no extra slot for add-on graphic cards.
Kevin's girl could always download the MP demo (http://www.3dgamers.com/games/maxpayne/) and try it out I guess (if you have anything faster then a 56k connection).

Havok and Mathengine arn't these super mystical engines. Its a animation and collision system. They are created independantly to any single software such as a game. All they do is replace the code that a software develper would normaly have to write for things such as animation, hit detection, object interaction and physics systems. People get these big hard ons for 'Physics' like its new to games or something. Using a third party applications to make your sofware is pretty standard these days. All this new "OMFG PHYSICS" is nothing more than hype. Get over it.
