View Full Version : Max and Walls

Something that I found was always painful for my suspension of disbelief is the way that Max tends to clip through walls in Max Payne.
Other characters have collision detection that prevents them from going through world objects. This can land them in odd positions when they die, but at least it means their arm doesn't end up sticking through the wall.
Max, on the other hand, has a tendency to stick through when shootdodging into a wall and whatnot. Any word on updates to this in Max Payne 2?

The Havok2 physics engine will *hopefully* fix that.
You could always solve the problem by not shootdodging.

Hopefully, if Max walks into a wall he will fold his elbow up, bringing his rifle or shotgun's muzzle up by his left shoulder like in Vietcong. images/icons/smile.gif

Oh yeah, Havok, too!
Man, I can't wait to blow baddies away with a shotgun and watch the ol' Ragdoll system take its course.
Raven Shield was another game that used that; sometimes enemies would end up in REALLY wierd Kama-Sutra-Esque positions, but for the most part, it was neat.

That bug was fixed in a patch that was later released. v1.3 I think.

If you read the magazine previews, you may have noticed them mentioning that the clipping-into-walls-when-shootdodging problem is not so prominently there any more.
(even if you really are so stupid as to shootdodge into a wall images/icons/tongue.gif )
The game's collision detection is also done with Havok - not just the physics. So the above problem... we used Havok to fix it, yes, but you don't need physics for that particular issue. Just collision detection.

And, what happens now if u shootdodge into a wall? Will he smack against that wall or will he just refuse to shootdodge?

He will smack the wall, then stand up and hit him self in the head while saying "Doh!"

Then he will cry. Like a baby.

Now the clipping issues, like holding a Colt Commando to Max's chest and having the muzzle actually enter his body, and the weird way his left hand held the slide on the pump-action shotgun, have been fixed, right? Right? images/icons/frown.gif
There's clipping here, though. Look at his stomach and hips. http://www.gamespot.com/pc/action/maxpayne2/screens_6073326.html?page=3

Oh, here's hoping the game will be out soon, so you'll have something better to do than nitpick old screenshots...

Is it just me, or do the muzzle flashes, explosions, etc... look more orange-ish than in Max Payne 1? In MP1, they were more goldish/yellow.
Oh, and Skaven, you could just "accidentally" host the game in its current state, and we would not be complaining about the screenshots. We would instead be complaining about something equally irrelavent in the actual game. It is a fair trade, nothing really changes, except what were whining about. Think about it.

I feel as if Max Payne 2 is going to make my bowels let loose as soon as I see it. I'm not going to be able to go to work. I'll be calling in saying my mom died when in reality, Max Payne 2 will be with me, and I'll be sending the bad guys to hell. Haha.

Not to restart the whole face issue, but IMO, that is how I initially imagined Max's face in MP2 to be. I don't mind either way, but the look on his face there makes him look like the old Max, except updated of couse.

Yeah... I like the way he looks there, too.
