MAX PAYNE 2: Matrix Edition

#############################################

ZIP FILE CONTENTS:

#- Matrix Edition v1.1.mp2m
#- Readme.txt (this file).

#############################################

This mod is my first attempt, it was originally just my way of learning the mechanics of MP2 modding but after a while it evolved into a decent mod, so I decided to release it, enjoy http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif.

-Harribo

#############################################

INSTALLATION:

Copy the '.mp2m' file into the same directory as the Max Payne 2 exe file. Start Max Payne 2 and select 'Matrix Edition v1.1' from the 'Choose customized game' pull-down menu.

#############################################

MODIFICATIONS (woot!)

New Levels:
#- The Chateau, dead man walking map (by the Hunted).
#- The two bonus dead man walking levels from Remedy. (Mona's Playground and the Upper-East Side.)

Bullettime:
#- Slower bullettime.
#- Unlimited bullettime!
#- Bullettime Timer glows greener with increasing kills instead of yellow.

Weapons:
#- Increased the power of all the weapons by 50%.
#- Increased the penetrability of all the weapons.
#- Changed some of the weapons and ammo pickup strings, I'll get round to changing the weapon select strings some time in the future.

Music/Sound:
#- Changed bullettime music to Burly Brawl off the Matrix Reloaded album.
#- Changed the music on the main menu to Reload by Rage against the Machine, also off the Matrix Reloaded album.

Particle Effects:
#- Added a wave effect to all weapon's bullets except the shotguns.

Misc:
#- Added a motion blur when in bullettime.
#- Screen flashes green when neckin' a painkiller.
#- Added new backgrounds and a new loading bar to the menu.
#- Stopped the movie playing on startup and in the menu after no activity.

#############################################

Future Modification Plans:

In the future I hope to:

#- Improve the bullet wave effect and make it visible only in bullettime.
#- Get better at modding!
#- Look out for the Captain Baseball-Bat Boy mod coming soon to a Max Payne 2 game near you!

#############################################

Other mods by Harribo:

#- Matrix Edition v1.1 (lite) a smaller version of this mod for dial-up users. Its exactly the same as this mod but with no mod music.

#############################################

Thanks to:

#- theHunted for the Chateau map.

#- Shout out to all the modders out there!

Way to go, guys!

Another nice thing about Remedy, if they were Gray Matter and this was RTCW, every other single player mission would be a DMW mp2m by now. This is soooo encouraging - real day brightener! Again, congratulations!

I'm slightly confused.... Does Harribo work w/ remedy?
Or is this just another matrix mod??

((you totally lost me on that comment about RTCW....I have no clue what u mean))

sorry, RTCW = Return To Castle Wolfenstein

CGW = Computer Gaming World (us edition March 2004) cd-rom #236

I found it encouraging that fan based MP2 mods are beginning to appear on gaming magazines cd-roms!

With RTCW official mods were overwhelming?

He would, believe me http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

But you have to remove copyrighted material normally.

I think Matrix Edition v1.1 got put on a CD that you get when you buy CG magazine or whatever it's called.

Really? I could think of other mods that deserves that better..

I'm sure a lot of people could, but the editors of the magazine (I'm sure) thought that this would please most people. Of course, if everybody were the editor of their own magazine, well.....well you know I'm goin somewhere with this....just not sure where yet.....hmm....well, figure it out on your own....

Considering Cinema is released under the Open Source agreement on Sourceforge theres nothing he can about it since in the license it even states that others are allowed to do anything with the code.

But lets not get into that again hey?

Actually, it's under the artistic license, which scripts (all the text files in a MP2 mod) and sound/images don't technically fall under.

That, and while software licences and EULAs don't go anywhere in court, copyright law does.

This is precisely the reason an unmodified copy of Cinema can't be distributed on magazine CDs - copyrighted materials (music, mainly.) This is why there's a modified version of Cinema on the Cinema SF page, which doesn't contain music.

"k thx bye."

Edit for clarification: though not technically open source, I am allowing others to use my script modifications as such, providing some mention of where they came from is given. This is no different than, well, any other open source project. However, it's quite a different story when multimedia content I and my team have created is used without permission with total disregard to the creators and copyright holders. The concept of open source is somewhat based around the concept of sharing, NOT the concept of "I don't give a shit who made what, I'm taking it whether you like it or not."

ADM

Sure you can't use the multimedia, but you have no copyright over the actual songs you've used either, so if you want to get technical you're even breaking the law as well.

Also nowhere in here:

http://www.opensource.org/licenses/artistic-license.php

does it say that noone can use the code without your permission, they are able to use it but they just have to state what changes they've made and give you credit for the rest.

So for example, say I just used the code base of Cinema and used it for my mod, if I gave credit to you for cinema and then listed the changes I've made on it, I'm allowed to release it.

You can't say no to me, other then personal feelings which this license doesn't cover.

Which I have been thinking about doing.

It's not code. It's script files. As far as licensing goes, there's a difference. The license doesn't explicitly state where scripts that're used as input to another application stand.

6. The scripts and library files supplied as input to or produced as output from the programs of this Package do not automatically fall under the copyright of this Package, but belong to whomever generated them, and may be sold commercially, and may be aggregated with this Package.

It's actually a bit of a grey area, really. The scripts aren't my concern, anyways.

My concern is of the 11 year old kids who show up, tint the screen green, then proceed to infringe on copyrights they don't hold with complete disregard for the copyright holders.

So, no, I can't say no to you, nor would I, as I don't really care what's done with the scripts.

ADM

I agree, just that I felt you only gave permission to certain people, when the license doesn't cover personal feelings if you know what I mean.

But then again I really like Open Source as I feel that it helps out everyone and sure those 11 year old kids might take it and release a crappy mod, but give them time and they'll be able to learn off your mod and make better things.

Everyone started off crappy, just need a bit of encouragement to advance.

What about weapons and things like that you have included? I'm not able to use those am I?

That's an issue of whether I want you to use them, or whether I want you to do all the HUD art, mesh converting and skin work yourself.

Being that you asked nicely, rather than just saying "here I am, I'm ripping your work," I don't have a problem with it. All I ask for is credit given to everyone who worked on whatever you use.

I'd also appreciate it if you stopped jumping all over everything I say, and if you, well, just chilled out a bit in general. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Fair enough I will do that.

I always give credit, I don't like ripping anyone off and if I take credit for others people end up expecting things I can't deliver, well what's the point of that?

Cheers.
