Guys,

It's known that the game doesn't launch on some BETA and server operating systems. These include:

- Windows XP SP2 Beta
- Windows XP For AMD64 build 1069 BETA (released as public beta by Microsoft recently)
- Windows Server 2003 SP1

The problem is with incompatibility between SecuROM, (the copy protection solution we use), and a change by Microsoft after the release of XP SP1. This should have been now fixed for future beta and public releases by MS (no game patches will be needed).

Apologies for this. This is not something Remedy can affect, the decision about copy protection wasn't made in our end.

Thanks for the information. I'm in the XP SP2 beta program, but I've always used cracks for conveinience anyways. Another case of copy protection causing problems..

My system:

Windows XP Sp2 Beta 2096 (newest one)
P4 2.8ghz 800fsb
1gb ddr pc3200 dual
radeon 9800 pro (cats 4.3)
Creative Audigy (latest drivers)

Before I installed the patch for Max Payne 2, it worked fine, after I installed the patch, now Max Payne crashes to the desktop after the first novel cinematic ends, for the first level.

I can play mods fine.

He already said SP2 causes problems (that means it can also cause problems WITH something). So... I hope you archived the files so you can uninstal it.

I understand that, but like I said, it was fine BEFORE the patch, therefore, how can this be an issue with Microsoft, when the version of the beta I am using, is essentially the final version, which does NOT work with the patched version of Max Payne 2. Microsoft will not be doing anything about this for SP2.

Thus, it should be fixed on Remedy's end.

(I am official beta tester for MS)

Windows eXPerienced Service Pack 2 is ready and Microsoft used over 300 million dollars to develop it. They also warn that certain program may have to be installed again for them to work after the installation of SP2.

Will Max Payne 2 need a patch?

Max Payne 2 works fine with or without the 1.01 patch with Windows XP SP2 final that has now been released.

Obviously if Max2 didn't work well in your systems before SP2, it won't work much better with it http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif But the final SP2 should have no impact on how Max Payne 2 works. The problem was just with SP2 betas.

According to

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=884130&product=windowsxpsp2

MS lists Max Payne 2 as one of those programs that may behave differently under WinXP SP2. Are you sure the issue is resolved?

According to the exact same URL, it only affects the version 1, not 1.05. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

You sure seem to have your MPs mixed up unless you can pinpoint Max Payne 2 v1.05 . Did you mean 1.01 instead of 1.05?

It doesn't say it affects 1.01 either so how come I made a mistake? http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Yes, an unintentional pressed-a-button.

I saw the same Microsoft web page and have no idea why Max Payne 2 is listed there.

Based on our limited tests (of v1.01), it works, even with the firewall set up to block everything and allowing for no exceptions.

I've asked for more information from my Microsoft contact.

Not really a conspiracy, no...

The problem was that the game's readme's navigation wouldn't work - Internet Explorer in SP2 blocks by default the loading of active content that sits on the local PC.

And by clicking on the yellow bar that appears on top of your IE window, you can allow the active content, and make everything run fine. Just with two mouse-clicks.

You should find Max2 removed from the above list shortly.

And what are you apologizing for? That's why it's a Beta. Like you said, it's not something Remedy can affect.

Yatta, it's still our game and I'd feel sorry if someone has any problems with it. Whether it's up to us or not.

I just installed SP2, my new nVidia driver updates, and Diret X 9.0c ... Now MP2 doesn't work. It says that, "Max Payne 2 requires a Microsoft DirectX 9.0 compatible display adapter."

Reinstall DirectX, reinstall graphics card drivers. In that order.

Tried rolling back to the previous driver?

I would, but Riddick doesn't run without 'em. Oi, this sucks.

Could you just test rolling back? Then come back to the latest again.

..... But the drivers overwrite the previous ones, and the nVidia site only puts the newest drivers up for download.

Why is it that I seem to be the only person in the whole Internet who is able to see the link to the driver archives on their web site? http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif

And you should always uninstall the drivers yourself before applying new ones.

I uninstalled, installed the old ones.. MP2 didn't work. I installed the newer ones again... MP2 didn't work. I figure, since the error states DirectX in it, it's probably a DirectX problem. I try the old DirectX drivers later. I've been pretty busy lately. (Spending money, playing games, moving the entire computer setup and desk into another room, and moving in new furniture), so hopefully I can resolve this soon.

P.S. - HAPPY NEW-YEAR!!!! http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Alright, I JUST got around to trying the older DirectX version... It doesn't fix it. I should have never gotten SP2. Riddick isn't worth losing MP2 over......

If anyone from Remedy, Rockstar, or 3D Realms has any idea on how to get Max Payne 2 working on a Dell Dimension 8200 with an nVidia GeForce Ti 4200 graphics card, running Windows XP, DirectX 9.0c, and a fully updated copy of the game, please help me. Otherwise I've just lost my favorite game and can no longer test my own mods or play other's.

I have had the same problem, but installing the 1.1 patch & latest drivers for my video card (ATI Radeon X300 on Dell Dimension 8400 running WinXPPro SP 2) & setting the game to run in Win98 compatibility mode appears to have worked for me. Oddly enough W2kPro mode didn't although that's what I'd been playing it on prior to upgrading.
