View Full Version : WHat made you continue to play Max Payne?

HI Everyone,
once again i've been playing Max Payne since it's so darn addictive. But it made me think, "why do I want to keep playing this game?" I must admit, i'm not an action fan, I prefer adventure titles, but I can make the exception for games like this.

For me, it was the carefully crafted story written by Sam Lake that made me want to continue to play the game. The style of story really adheres to the Noir genre. It's a very modern yet original way of keeping Noir relevant with the times. If there was any discrepancy with the game, I probably would have liked more charcter interaction like friendly NPC's and conversations. But the point still remains, Max Payne is a fantastic title and should be a growing legacy in the PC gaming industry. Bring on MP2!

WHat made you want to continue to play Max Payne instead of putting it back on the shelf? Are there some people amongst us that perhaps felt discomforted by the subject matter of the story?

PS: What was the connection between the Mafia and Aeiser Corporation? Why and how were they associated? I understand both of their links to Valkir in how they dealt it and used it, but I don't understand the relationship between the 2 parties.

I think it was knowing that someday, I would get to the finale level. Only, that turned out to be a crock. images/icons/frown.gif

Kung Fu mod. I had stopped playing the game when I reached part 2, it was way too boring. But the Kung Fu added a much needed spice.

I played and beat it like 7 or 8 times. And then messed with the Kung Fu mod a bit and that 1st person mod. other than that, nothing.

...Max Payne NEEDED a random enemy generator...that would've made a world of difference...

Bushido,
that's a pretty neat idea, it would be like a skirmish mod or something. I like that. I've always thought though that there should be an interactive graphic novel (other than the "stop" and "play" type buttons). Basically, when max is talking to someone, you can select the line of speech he would say or a course of action he would take which would change the direction of the story. Just a thought.

Adding a storyline with multiple paths would suck. There are only three ways to do it.

The writer could either divide his time and effort amongst all pathways, in which case they would be poorly developed and not well fleshed out.

Second, you could get a different writer to do each branch. Then, the different parts of the game would seem incongruous.

Third, you could make offshoots that all originally return to the same central path. That would piss people off because it would be falsely suggesting they can change the outcome without actually giving them any freedom. Kinda like Deus Ex.

Deus Ex had three endings, what are you talking about. I played all three of them.

Let's see.......maybe the spectacularity of action in John Woo style or BT. The Story, very deep and full of charism...I love the whole game actually...and when I want to play a good game Max is always in my harddrive. images/icons/smile.gif

Mods of course do their job. images/icons/wink.gif

I just keep going back for the feel of the game, the mood, the atmosphere. I don't mod except in very unusual circumstances, since a game that is good enough for me to finish is good enough for me to replay. I just love this game, plain and simple. Actually, outside of Max and Diablo II, I don't play anything anymore, since I don't really have the time. Those two just keep calling me.

I replayed it again because of the story, and because I wanted to get good at it! I want to be one of the best girls at the game! images/icons/smile.gif I don't know if I am because I am the only girl I know who plays Max Payne! images/icons/smile.gif
The story rocks, the characters rock, the game is just awesome! Thats why I wanted to keep playing it!

girl gamers are such a rarity.

At least "out of the closet" girl gamers.

I once heard someone say that girl gamers are just a myth; a unicorn; like a fairy tale or something.

I guess not.

Cheers to Kevin's Girl and Basky for uhhh bieng a girl and playing max payne at the same time.

My mom only ever wanted to play Tetris and Super Mario Bros. 1 (on the NES).

But I do know quite a lot of girls/women who play stuff like Max Payne, Neverwinter Nights, Baldur's Gate and so on. Though most of the girls/women I know tend to only play Sims images/icons/tongue.gif

KillJoy:

I don't know how much Deus Ex you played, but how you got through the game had nothing to do with the endings. No matter what you did, you always wound up with those three choices at the end. I played all three; but only by quicksaving 45 seconds before the end and then loading and trying the other endings.

Like every other "decision" you made in the game, it only impacted what happened immediately after. Nothing you can do in Deus Ex will affect the longterm game, except for a few things you can do that will make it impossible to finish (like attacking an ally early on and thus making all friendlies try to kill you).

KillJoy

Well, yah.

I quicksaved too. I thought you were reffering to the endings only, not the majority of the game.

I agree, deus ex only was different in the last choice.

Something that WAS cool about Deus Ex, though, is that a given gameplay situation (a fight, a specific objective, etc) could be handled in multiple ways. You can search underwater for a clue to the code to that door, or you can spend some of your Multitools to hack it open. Or you can blow it the hell up if you have the explosives to spare!

As Jade said, there's nothing special about it.

"Girl gamer" sounds exactly like "girl power" to me. Sounds like someone taught the Spice Girls to play Quake. "Gamer" covers both genders.

I'll say this because a) I'm a butt-head and b) I'm. . . a butt-head:
I don't play video games to impress anyone. And I could bet you that Jade, for instance, doesn't either.

We are not special. Don't praise us for doing something that we, presumably, enjoy very much. images/icons/smile.gif

*turns baseball cap sideways*

Now, to give a statement pertinent to the topic.

I continue to play Max Payne for many reasons. It has an excellent story that, while it is now predictable, never ceases to draw me in. The gameplay never gets old, but then again, has shooting thugs and torching junkies with molotov cocktails ever sounded boring?

Those things keep me playing. But what keeps me loving Max Payne? After all, I still play Unreal Tournament frequently, but I can't honestly say that I'm passionate about it. (i.e. My license plates don't say UT4EVR or something.)

I continue to love Max Payne because of the phenomenal writing. (Aren't you all so surprised?) I've ranted and raved about the brilliance before, but in all seriousness, it is bloody brilliant. Mr. Järvi made it to the top of my favorite authors list with this game.

. . . And, well, as silly as I feel admitting this to a lot of people, his work is one of the larger inspirations for my choosing to go into English and (hopefully) become a professional writer.

images/icons/blush.gif Yeah, well, now you know.

What made me buy and play max payne? I was over at a friends house, and he says to me, "hey man, check out this game. So, I did, and I was like "Jesus, how sweet!" Afterwards, I ran out, and picked up a copy. I have been hooked ever since
