Will Max Payne 2 come on CD(s) only or will it comes on DVD as well? Also, if it comes on DVD, will it include stuff that doesn't come on the CD version of Max Payne?

P.S.: I recall 3drealms doing something like that on TV and ROTT when they released floppy and CD versions of that game.

Doubt it. Not like there's anything extra to put on the DVD, and you mostly only use two cds when you install a couple of times anyway. No real reason to have two versions.

But since it's more than one CD I was thinking that Remedy would take the opportunity to put gigs of MP2 goodies and/or even include Max Payne 1 full with Max Payne 2 on DVD and give us a discount on both games. It would be rather cool for Remedy to offer Max Payne 1 and 2 on one DVD and give us a discount combo price.

i guess the larger issue is when will PC games make the move toward DVD?

Even if there isn't enough content to warrant the move, it eventually has to come like the move from floppy to cd rom.

Maybe the Blu-Ray (25-50 GB I recall) could make its way into the software realm and make another giant leap.

No it doesn't. DVD is only required for consoles, since they can't really install games there. (technically you could on Xbox, but they want to keep HD sizes small prolly)

There's no games that needs much more than 1GB compressed. Most games that use 3cds have two with a lot of stuff on it and one with like half. Still probably cheaper than having a DVD version, and still I don't see what goodies it would be. It's not like they make behind the scenes and stuff of games. I think you'll look far after a Max Payne 2 and Max Payne 1 combo box too, not a good marketing choice if you ask me. Maybe some store would offer it though at a later point in time, ie. offers for buying both, not same box and stuff.

Can't compare it with floppy. Floppy had 1,44MB, CD-ROM has 700MB. I guess the larger size of Max Payne 2 is due to bigger and higher quality textures mostly. Maybe some more sound and stuff. There's a limited amount of it they can put it, and I don't think it'll ever be enough to warrant a CD version for PC until some years for now. Maybe for RPGs and stuff, but not for any of the action game types.

So MP2 will come on one CD except everything will be compressed unlike MP1 where only part of the game on the CD was compressed meaning this time around we have to install the whole game and that we won't be given the option of running part of the game from CD, correct?

Personally I'd welcome DVD-PC games with open arms. It's a pain in the ass to hassle with those CDs.

But, alas, CD printing is just so damn cheap compared to DVD production, so it'll take a while.

that's what I was thinking

DVD is way ++++ expensive

compared to cd's anyway.

I sold it and put in a Sony CRX140e CD-RW in its place later that year since my PC had room for only one CD or DVD drive and combos were very few back then. I predicted that DVD wouldn't pick up until 2003 for software and now I can see it won't even be until 2005 judging by the looks of it.

Video takes up a lot of space. Diablo II, for example, had an entire CD for cinematics alone. It seems to me, though, that the Max Payne cinematics were rendered by the in-game engine (except the opening one) and so that would cut down on the space required.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">Erm, I guess gamedata usually is compressed anyway, but I'm thinking Max Payne 2 is 2cds, one you install with and one you play with. Although you also install from the play cd usually. No games use anything on the cd anymore anyway, it's mostly for copy protection. That's why it requires 1,5GB on the HD. (which is about 2 cds).

I figure that games will switch to DVD after every game ends up being on five CDs. That's how it happened with floppies.

It's funny how when DVD-ROMs first came out games that used it came immediatly, but after a while they just faded away. The other funny thing is that for some reason DVD games always seemed to screw up somehow. I never did get any to work correctly.
