Don't laugh, I need someone to tell me how to build your own levels in Duke Nukem3D. I'm a new user and want to build my own levels.
Thanks

I don't think anybody would laugh at that perfectly reasonable request.
When I started making levels there was only the build help (buildhlp.exe) file that comes with Build. So, first thing to is to look on the Duke3d CD and copy the entire contents of the goodies folder to your Duke3d folder. This will give you all the basics for level building.
Cyborg's site above is pretty damn good, it just has sooooo much stuff. Have a look here :-

Again, part of the R.T.C.M. network. More FAQs on Build than you could ever want to read.
I would suggest, taking a small map done by somebody else and having a play around with it for starters. Get the feel of the Build program. Once you have some of the basics, try the more complicated effects and your own levels from scratch. Good luck, and don't get put off, you have to stick with it http://www.3drealms.com/ubb/images/icons/smile.gif
Word of Wisdom >>> Build the Duke3d editor is a little glitchly so ALWAYS backup your work as you go along!
2nd Word of Wisdom >>> Never delete a red line (double-sided wall) by pulling two points (vertices) together. It may mean nothing now, but you wait.....

A little glitchy? http://www.3drealms.com/ubb/images/icons/wink.gif
If you're using a DOS Window to run build, DO NOT RUN ANYTHING IN WINDOWS BEFORE HAND! Build will crash. If you have Paint Shop Pro open (may do the same with other apps) it will crash if you try copying a texture.
Basically anything you do will make build crash.

I wish someone had told me this when I started. It only took me about 23 attempts to realise it was the wrong thing to do. http://www.3drealms.com/ubb/images/icons/blush.gif

He's right. There's nothing to be embarrassed about just because you're new to build.
Anyway, I found a windows help book which explains a lot about Duke Build. Unfortunately I can't remember where I found it.
But if you want, I can e-mail you a copy.

BTW, click here (http://mapfaq.3dportal.com/mapfaqonline/index.html) for a really good Map FAQ.

I always used the Duke Nukem Build Handbook. It's much better than FAQs about only 1.3d and the build FAQ from 3DR, since I can look at it and work at the same time, plus it's more accurate. The only thing I needed that wasn't in the book was lightning and the tele distinations in ATOMIC. The book also goes over proper shading, usage of sprites and Editart, and gives the key listings.
If Veldrik is reading, I thank you for making GLBuild. I finally got over my problems with palette conversion with it.

I found the book, by copying down the book code number (from the Dukebook.gif) on the Duke CD/build. The number is ISBN: 0-7821-1869-0
Then i called a couple book stores. It was awhile ago. I think they had to order it. Got it in less than a week.

I appreciate your thanks. One of the best things about writing an application is knowing that it has helped someone. http://www.3drealms.com/ubb/images/icons/smile.gif
