I think I've found the creator of Nuclear Nightmare.

Joe Siegler once said the guy doing Nuclear Nightmare was a founding member of a well known company.

I think Joe was talking about Brian Goble (http://www.micromanx.com/goble/index.html), a founding member of Monolith (http://www.lith.com). Brain Goble made a few games published by Softdisk (http://www.softdisk.com). And he created MicroMan (http://www.micromanx.com/goble/microman.html), a Windows platform game, just like Nuclear Nightmare!

I've tried to email him to ask if my theory is correct, but the delivery failed.

I used to have time to think up stuff Like that I remember joe got upset once when I looked around for his address and phone number and then posted them on the board http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif never found out if they were the right ones though

Whose address? Mine? Your damn right I'd get upset over that. If you're talking about Brian Goble, I wouldn't really care, although posting someone's contact info like that would be kind of tacky.

Microman looks exactly like Nuclear Nightmare. I know NN was later released, that might be it - I can't remember for sure.

Nuclear Nightmare is a cancelled Apogee game. It's released independently, but no one knows where to get it. It's a 256 VGA Windows 3.x game in the tradition of Duke Nukem.

Hello,

Frenkel found me and let me know about this thread. Talk about a blast-from-the-past!

Yes, Nuclear Nightmare was going to be Apogee's first Windows 3.1 game. We decided to work together on the project after I showed them MicroMan and let them know that I was interested in doing more on the Windows 3.1 platform (not many people were doing games on Windows back then).

We worked on a prototype of Nuclear Nightmare which didn't get very far because we ended up shifting gears back to MicroMan when Apogee was in talks with Microsoft to ship a game with Windows 95 (this was back in 93 or 94). We made a relatively spiffy demo of MicroMan with professional art and sounds (not my programmer art from the original game) but in the end, they only had about 150k of space for a game because they were still shipping on floppy disks. Even back then, 150k was not really possible for a level based adventure type game (and they wanted fancy sounds and high-res graphics).

After that, I got busy starting Monolith and Apogee got busy on other projects...and Nuclear Nightmare kind of died a quiet death. The game was never released as it was never even close to finished. It was definitely an interesting concept and Scott and George were really helpful at the time in coming up with a lot of the great ideas for the game. I learned a lot from the project.

For those that mentioned they use to play MicroMan, my new company, HipSoft (http://www.hipsoft.com), did an overhaul on MicroMan (more for fun and more aimed at kids) which you can try at:

I hope this helps clear up the Nuclear Nightmare mystery.

Heh.

Look what I found. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Brian wanted it stated that the colors are probably all out of whack because when I ran it (he was on the phone when I did ths) I got an error. It ran, but with an error, so some resource is missing.

This is the earliest of the three builds I found on an old backup CD. The second appears to be just a copy of the first. The third one is much newer than this, but it's password protected. No clue what it might be - Brian said he'd try and see if he could find the password this weekend. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Wow, this takes me back.

Greg Malone, who later became a producer on Duke 3D, was in charge of this project from Apogee's end.

Microsoft was looking for a showcase Windows 3.1 game, and we tried to step up to the plate, but the size restriction slapped us down. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/doh.gif

Anyway, nice to see this stuff come up once in a while, just to jog the ol' gray memory card.

I should email Greg Malone (http://www.gregmalone.com) then, to ask if he still knows about this game http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif.

Well, Brian told me that since there was an error dialog box when I tried to run it, it probably is why the colors look like that.
