You can't do something like thsi without rewriting the game from the ground up - and that's not something that's happening.
Don't mistake eDuke for what it isn't. It's an enhancement to allow for bigger TC's, and some more user editing abilities.
It is NOT a big new feature laden version of Duke3D.

I am somewhat disappointed to hear about the network situation (though not terribly surprised). Still, I'm glad Joe said what he did - there was much I didn't understand about eDuke, and I didn't want to get too carried away with the notion that it could do a million new things that were, in fact, impossible.
But, are specific player classes possible? Could the game present the user with a choice of characters, each with their own sprites and weapons?

It could.

With the onset of this new eDuke, I was wondering if certain network/gameplay options are now possible. First of all, would it be possible for Duke to be client/server based, or is it peer/peer for good? Also, what about something like player classes? Thanks guys.

You want to rewrite the network code of the Build source, go ahead. Otherwise it WILL reamain peer-to-peer.
Matteus isn't doing it.

What???
You can easily do a million new things!
I think it limitted what you can't do.
Choice of characters where possible six months ago, and the weapon stuff's in the near future.
Just get carried away. Im miles ahead of you,,,

What about the TEN specifications
What made TEN so special in handling dukes IPX protocal over the internet?
Somewhere it indicates that TEN was more or less tweaked to handle dukes network better or best or the internet.
This is in the exe
"The multiplayer code within Duke Nukem 3D has been highly customized to run best on TEN, where you'll experience fast and stable performance, plus other special benefits"
Now is this true facts, where theres specifications for better performance? or was this more or less a marketing technique?
If it was for real, Can we have this information to aid in our quest in improving dukes network code to perform better over the iinternet?
