My feeling exactly.
Today's technology allows developers to create potentially interesting (scifi) environments such as this (http://www.gengamers.com/html/vivi-56.html) and this (http://www.gengamers.com/html/vivi-50.html) and we still end up with standard shooter fare.
Creating ever more detailed gameworlds is commendable, but gameplay will simply have to evolve along with that if any significant progress is to be made.
For one thing, reliance on uber-violence will have to go.
I don't know if I even want to imagine playing a game like SoF with the supposed photorealistic graphics of the next decade or so.

I have to agree with Wamp, the enviroments look really nice... but the characters are kindof blocky. Usualy I go for real violent stuff...
But this game just seem to appeal to me, this isn't like gibs or anything. It just seems like they are trying to cover up their own shortcomings with a shitload of blood. Kindof sad... but who knows. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif
But, yep... I would say about average for nowadays.

Vivisektor isn't *that* new. It's in development for some years now - and AFAIR we even had one or two threads about it, already.
Hm - it looks neat (not great though) but I have to agree that all the same egoshooter stuff is getting a little annoying. It's really like they have the technology to create very cool graphics but can't make any innovations in gameplay. Most of all recent games are indeed becoming pretty boring.
I don't mind a straight shooter like SeriousSam now and then but all the time? Nah. Maybe I'll pick it up as soon as it's cheaper.

Creating ever more detailed gameworlds is commendable, but gameplay will simply have to evolve along with that if any significant progress is to be made.
I don't think it will happen in the FPS genre. For one, some people don't want it to evolve. Secondly, any FPS that deviates from standard FPS characteristics, people want to call something else (Deus Ex, for instance). Any game that evolves gameplay will be assigned to a different genre, or it's own genre (say, Action RPG).
For one thing, reliance on uber-violence will have to go.

I agree. There will be a point when graphics realism becomes too close for comfort. I'm guessing that Rockstar will create an interactive snuff film, and gamers like us will begin signaling for the check. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I think there's plenty of room for gameplay to evolve within the confines of the fps genre. Firstly, I think more variation in gameplay could be introduced with the gamer having to fight against a large variety of enemies that require radically different tactics.
Secondly, and more significantly, tactical play itself could be required. The gamer might have specific objectives that have to be accomplished while under enemy fire, maybe having to hold a position until reinforcements arrive or support the advance of his teamates, perhaps as a sniper. This is just a natural extension of the sort of gameplay favoured by Far Cry or Halo. But think these sorts of challenges would work best when integrated directly into the story. For example, the Klieners lab scene where the resistance's hideout is discovered and the player has to support his 'friends' retreat.
Then there's the inclusion of new novel 'weapons' which go along the side the player's now standardised arsenal. In HL2 Valve are introducing the manipulator to do this, encouraging the gamer to constantly think of lethal uses for the games physics system. With throwing a barrel becoming just as instinctive and fun as throwing a grenade.
Doom 3 is adding the flashlight, enabling the gamer to explore the pitch blackness, but forcing him to switch to another weapon when enemies come jumping out from nowhere. This means he is constantly making risk assessments over whether to benefit from the increased visibility the flashlight can provide, or to forge through the darkness fully armed.

wow, this game reminds me of quake 2, in a bad way. It has similar sounds (all weak and fake) and similar graphics/animations. There isnt much new here except you can blow peoples skin off, which isnt even realistic nor is it really that cool. Once people get bored of that, then it wont be any different than quake 2 or some shit.
just my 2 cents.

Dont get me wrong, i dont only care about graphics, but when a game like this is in developement that seems to have no real story or new gameplay, then beauty is the next thing that can keep this thing from sinking, and looking at its dated-everything, the game doesnt seem like it will be any good at all. Ummm... yeah, that's what we've been talking about. The demo release. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif
And to say the least, I was letdown a bit. Didn't have high hopes anyway but still... kindof meh. The main reasons...
...first off the German menus and setup options. If they're gonna have English voice acting, why not english menus?
Second, no reloading on the weapons. This game is being pushed as a serious shooter, with a good plot and lots of atmosphere and such.
But not having to reload a M16 is kindof off.
And third and last, the character models are very low poly. The fur covers it up nice on the animals (until you blow some meat off the bones) but the human guards look bad.
I haven't tried the alpha demo, not sure if I want to.

completed the demo earlier today. seems a pretty cool game but not really AAA in terms of polish. the actual level design and gameplay seems quite cool and involving with big background changes happening all the time to keep you hooked. but i have no idea why you people keep talking about the gore! honestly, it's far less gory than games like FEAR. i mean there's hardly any blood for one thing. the only difference is with some characters you can shoot their flesh off to reveal a skeleton underneath, but this isn't exactly GORY - it's comic! honestly, if i hear one more complaint about gore i'll rip your balls off!

I think people were complaining because of screens posted earlier, there were a few screens linked to earlier that all they seemed to show was the gore.
So for a while it seemed that was the only point.
But, after playing the demo the gore hardly comes into paly... like you said it's more comical than offensive.
The full game might be fun, but I'm not really hyped about it.

It's been released in Russia for a long time. It was out before the demo was released... they just don't seem to want it out in the US for some reason.

Oh. Hm. Do you know if they've released an english patch? Or, at the least, have released it in England.
...
Or I could just look on google.

Don't have a clue.
I imported a copy of Vivisector from Russia, some family around there actualy. ;) But I sold it. It was way to irritating to try and set it up or even follow the story with it in russian and me native to english.
