I loved that movie... havn't seen it in a while though. Did anyone else kindof tie the plot of this film in with the story of System Shock 2?

Not all of it, just some of it. A ship made to go faster than the speed of light (but it simply bends space to do it) is lost. Then it's found... but no one is alive, and some army (or whatever) guys are sent to investigate. I don't know, it just seemed like the basic premise was the same.

Good movie. Haven't played SS2. By the thread name I thought it was a crappy sequel only good enough to be released on DVD. I'll have to pick this up as my brother stole my VHS of this when he moved out.

I do know that Cliffy B. and the rest of the original Unreal team got their inspiration for the Vortex Rikers from this movie. They've said so in an interview somewhere.

Yeah but that was before Paul "wreck-a-movie" Anderson became a corperate movie-lapdog. The AvP movie is going to fall short just like the RE flick (can anyone say cube?).

He started out with great expectations (Event Horizon was originally going to be spectacular) however he bowed down and kissed the balls of the movie industry bigguns and cut the living hell out of it to be released in theaters. E.H. originally was a lot more violent/disturbing ... (something we will never see). Money makes the world go round afterall.

At times you can't fight against the companies and eventually you have to cave in. And seeing he doesn't have alot of power in the movie industry, he was forced to bend backwards.
Best to have a slightly watered down version then to not have it all together. But it goes to show that Paul has good ideas, it's just that he usually has a small budget or other problems. Resident Evil cost just under 40 million but I thought it was a good movie, while other didn't.

The entire Alien series had problems with the FOX executives. Alien 3 comes to mind mostly.

Paul is a big fan of both franchises and won't rape them like other directors. He is using Alien, Aliens and Predator as guidelines for the movie while adding some stuff of his own.

And with the new info coming out (can't wait to see the battle damaged queen in all her pissed off glory) I'm becoming more and more assured that this movie will kick ass.

The story reminded me of Doom too. "Folding" space and teleportation, where's the difference? Both ways people go through hell. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif
The problem with he so sell out of Anderson is that he doesn't produce the movies himself. He can't do what he hell he wants and he can't fight too much for it. Directors are expendable. (Not IMO.)

Since he's also been writing some of the scripts of his movies - I wonder:
What would be the outcome of him writing a game script? I mean his movies often feel somehow like a game, too. And with the recent HLē trailer it seems games become more and more really interactive movies.
Often there's lack of a well-thought story with reasonable (not being there just for plot-twist's sake) plot-twists and real dramaturgy.
Paul Anderson seems to me like he'd possibly do good game stories.

I think if Anderson would work on a game the story would have big potential for a "OMG IT's coler than HL's!" award. If you keep in mind where we are now.... :/

I liked his movies. They aren't Hollywood clichei-esque.

I just read that there are other reason why the AvP takes place in Antartica. The main reason is because this is a prequel to the Alien movies, so very few people have to know about their existence. Hence why they don't have the battle in a more populated area.
And the other reason has to do with the harshness of the environment. Antartica's surroundings are very similiar to LV-426.

Thanks for bringing that up, now I don't have to rant again http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif It seems, whenever Paul "I kill potential" Anderson comes up, one of us is making sure no thread goes without the obligatory rant... http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/love.gif

Well what do you know, the DVD has been pushed back to early 2006. The delay is because of the extra characters who appear in the deleted scenes. They need to ask these extras permission before those scene can be used or else those extras can sue Paramount. Here's the info link (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0119081/board/flat/20242357). Philip Eisner(the writer) is in the forum as well.
Meanwhile you can read this article here:

It's painful to read that it was origionally intended to be even more diturbing...EV is a brilliant movie as it is now. Maybe Paul Anderson is great at making his own stuff, but just sucks terribly at other peoples stuff (no pun intended...executives..). AvP was shite..RE was okay but at points was embarrising to watch.

It just fuels my hatred of the executives, If they would leave the damn films alone maybe they would actually be more succesfull. Will the EV DVD have unseen footage?

Believe it or not Philips lay dormant for quite some time until Anderson came over and gave some suggestion for improving the script. In fact, it was given to a few other script writers like the the guy who wrote Seven. However, the excutives came in and started slaughtering the movie because it was 2 hours long. Another factor those elitist out there boycotted thismovie cause they think it's a Alien clone! http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/doh.gif

I liked Event Horizon, but I don't think I'll get the DVD if the extended scenes are just "extras" -- I want a proper special edition director's cut like Aliens, dammit :tinyted:

This was the first 18-rated movie I ever saw in the cinema, and although it didn't terrify me, there were a couple of good shocks in there... (yes, that's right, I'm sure it was only a PG-13 in America, but over here we actually try to shield our children from gore :hhg:)

What really surprises me is how old this thread is -- I was at first confused by reference to the movie Alien vs. Predator being in the future tense :insomnia:

i always thought itīs uncut (given things like the hell scenes, where people eat their own arms and stuff or the guy thatīs hanging from the ceiling with an opened chest and his organs lie on the ground )

btw: iīm a big fan of Sam Neil and especially of Horror films with him ("In the Mouth of Madness" from John Carpenter)

can anyone tell me why this friggin spoiler warning isnīt working

You need to use [ spoiler ] and [ / spoiler ], removing all the spaces between the square brackets.

This is a spoiler

thanks

i wonder, in germany the Aliens vs. Predator uncut version will be released in September, my question (because this version already has been released in USA) is it worth buying, i mean is this the complete version as Paul W.S. Anderson wanted it to be.

It's rated 16 in germany and I would love to see a DVD version with the extended scenes added into the movie - Like this it's a no buy since I already own the normal DVD
