can we do a map using 3dsmax?
like a big trimesh, you are inside and it is like a map, but with a less cubic environnement. And after you export it to maxed, you put it in a big square and you place a jumpoint, some ai nodes and enemys and maybe some object with fsm?
would that work?would it slow down the level?can we place entities on a trimesh?

Probably slow things a lot *G*
Noodlez had a tut level with about thirty simple trimesh cones as spikes, the file was huge, trimeshes make for big files, making them prefabs might have help?
Is all this NOT USING MaxED2 about grabbing levels from somewhere and claiming them as your own or what? Or is this a school project?
Does any game actually use 3dmax to make levels?
I mean really? (Isn't Maya the preferred choice for all that console stuff?)

well you can't place exits. i don't even think you can have room (i.e. flipped) geometry. either way it'd be useless since you couldn't optimize your map by help of exits, which would make the big effort of complex geometry done in 3dsmax even harder to process.

it is just curiosity, and some time when we ask question, it gives idea to people, but if you say that it is not a good thing, don't take this idea people http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

what is maya? a concurent of 3dsmax or a level editor?

This has been asked already two times. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

The program they used to make Jar Jar Binks... The movie modelling software. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Yes u can. But you cant make it a room in Max Payne 2. Try HL or Quake based stuff. Even in those games u might have to retexture it.
would it slow down the level?
Yes ofcourse. As I've read somewhere that the culling procedure on a geometry(raw MAXED geometry) is far better than that of a trimesh. And also it handles trimesh as a level object rather than the level. Maybe the exit optimization isn't calculated that way too to make things faster with trimesh.

Both of them are used to make levels as well. Even Softimage is used somewhere to make levels I guess. Though Maya has recently captured more of this "level with 3d software" market. Coz it has that "real-time" thingy which is more like MAXED's "WYSIWYG" with animation too.
The number of omtimization things MAXED uses is:-
1> Front face culling
2> Back Face culling
3> Exit optimization.
Whereas geometry made in 3d softwares can use all those types except for the portal optimization. Though it can be used with other famous outdoor optimizations like above all "Octree culling'.

It is the god that made the following species:-
1> Spiderman 1
2> Spiderman 2
3> Ice Age
4> LOTR 1,2 & 3.
5> The Mummy.
6> The Mummy Returns.
7> The Hulk(game)
8> Gran Turismo 3(game)
9> Tomb Raider: AOD (game)
10> Star Wars Bounty Hunter (game)
11> Dino Crisis 3 (game)
......and more and more..........
Edit:-
Man O Man http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/eek.gif; I just read my post. I wonder why do I write so much unnecessary bullshit. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/doh.gif

thanx for all those information dude http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
Yes it's possible and reasonable for small areas, but a little bit bigger areas make the gis calculation impossible, tried myself some time back.

Where do you find the time to test everything, Froz?

I've made a small cave map completely using 3dmax. If you plan it out well you can allow for things like exits, etc etc and intregrate them quite smoothly.
The only thing as Froz has already mentioned is that using GIS can take a lot longer to render than a level completely made from maxed2.
