Hi everyone,
Now this probably belongs in MP1 Mods & Editing, but since most of the people are here, and since it will also count for MP2 soon I'll post it here.
At www.PayneReactor.com (http://www.PayneReactor.com) right now is a list of about 50 of the best Max Payne 1 mods, compiled by Maddieman. There's a lot of cool stuff here, and it's amazing how many small and funny mods this community has made. Now I haven't even tried half myself, but there are quite a few I remember to be cool. Sadly I couldn't put pictures there, we'll see later if we can add some, but Maddie has written a good description of every mod.
So do yourself the favour and stop by www.PayneReactor.com (http://www.PayneReactor.com) and then go to the Modifications section either by using the menu or by clicking the right-side highlight for the modlist.
One will also be compiled for MP2, probably by me, or me and Maddie together when the mod results come.

Great job! I love downloading old favorites, as long as new ones. This has provided a lot of fun and some great experiences I probably would never had got to experience if not for this collection of modifications.
Heck, I never even heard of quender's map pack(which I now love), and I never realized there was a CMP 2! http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/doh.gif

Well..........that shows exactly that "if there's a will there's a way". I wish I was the owner of Filefront, I'd delete that file first.
Anyway that article kicks real a$$. Its a must-read for everybody. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

OT: Maddie. Why are you so crictical of other people's TCs?
Maybe you are being a bit harsh. Just because a lot of them were not finished, it does not mean that they would be bad if they were finished. Afterall couldn't one argue that Katana is infact a TC and its one of your own projects. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif
I mean your essay on your website.
BTW I also feel its a bit rich of you to say 'only a small percentage of mods come out' when how long have we been waiting for your mods to come out. C'mon be fair.
Please don't take this to be a direct attack (Katana looks good) on yourself it just seems that some of your comments are unfair on other modders.

I thought he was more than fair, TCs ARE a lot of work, they take time to get all the workarounds working, like building a ship in a bottle without the sourcecode.
How could anyone object to having their efforts immortalized? What's your real objections?

Samji,
I understand what you're saying, and on the outset, perhaps it does make me look somewhat hypocritical. But, honestly, if you think I'm slamming modders, or bragging about my own mods, then you've got the wrong end of the stick entirely. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif
Heck, the whole point of "The Good Mods" was to remind this community, and everyone else, that we do have some good mods other than Kung Fu, and that they don't necessarily have to be Total Converstions -- that is the point.
I have nothing against total conversions or their creators. My objection is towards the community throwing ALL their eggs into one basket -- putting ALL their hopes into WIP total conversions, while forgetting the smaller mods, and then when they're cancelled proclaiming that this community is a total failure or that it is dead. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif
BTW I also feel its a bit rich of you to say 'only a small percentage of mods come out' when how long have we been waiting for your mods to come out.
Maybe it's rich, but I think it's true -- in case you missed it, the comment was referring to the article I wrote before, on the 26th; where I explained it in full, with examples and statistics to justify my conclusion. Roughly speaking, 1 quarter of the number of mods announced ever see the light of day -- finished or otherwise. I don't see how it has anything to do with how long I'm taking to finish my mods. If I decide to cancel them, then it only proves the point further, doesn't it?
Either way, I would suggest reading the previous articles before taking this further.
just because a lot of them were not finished, it does not mean that they would be bad if they were finished.
I'm not saying that dead TCs suck because they weren't finished. I'm saying they're dead because they're TCs.
Compare this list of Dead Mods (http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/showflat.php?Cat=&Number=600993&page=0&view=collapsed&sb=5&o=93&fpart=1) with the good mods list. Most, if not all of them are tcs.
If you don't like that, well I'm sorry, but don't shoot the messenger. :/
Like it or not, if you start a TC, you've got a lower chance of finishing it than any other mod. I'm not saying it's impossible, but the odds are against you, and it's a lot of work. If you finish it, then you have my infinite respect, because from experience I know that it's by no means an easy feat.
Lets stay on topic; if you want to take this further then PM me.

One last thing: http://www.frogtoss.com/index.php?content=finishingafullgame&dir=journal
It isnt neccesarily about Game mods, but it does provide some useful info about the pitfalls of making indie games, and in this context, TCs.

Maddieman seems right. From where I sit, it seems that most people are more interested in being "on a team", and not so much with releaseing something or just are more interested in bragging about what they're doing, and then never delivering.
Seems that a good percentage of modding is more about the ego of the thing then actually delivering anything.
