Why not? OC YOUR FRIGGIN PHONE MAN!!!!1!
You do realize though that not all of these tools are for private persons, people that make these phones, and make stuff for the phones have good use for this. Maybe you shouldn't be so short-sighted next time http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Bah, cell phones have 386s at most and take five seconds to load up a 75k game. What is there to benchmark?

Actually they might...my cell phone's resolution is 96x90, so I'm sure it'll scale. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Hmmm... okay, I just HAD to do this... here is a Doom3 screen at 96x90... http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
(someone needs to paste this onto a picture of one of these phones, maybe post a message somewhere about Doom3 being available for the pone http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif)

Checked my phone...apparently it's 96x65, actually. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif However, if I hold it up to the monitor, that 96x90 pic fits almost perfectly. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

My phone has a 32bit ~123MHz RISC processor (ARM-9 series), and a 16bit active TFT screen with 176x208 screen. Symbian 7.0 OS. I can run Messenger, mIRC, Opera and all sorts of other fun stuff, like viruses http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif I think it would kick the ass of a 386 http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif
Your phones that you mention aren't smartphones, that's also why this isn't a benchmark of those. These phones are a bit more advanced than you may think, that's also why it's good for the makers of programs and stuff for Series 60 and related platforms to know how the things will perform.

Hardly...you can see the green when where I cut off the sides, and the top and bottom don't quite fit either. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

The 3d test looks pretty cool considering it runs on smartphones.
But I think the actual real-world usefulness of this software is rather limited. Instead of only measuring measuring sheer hardware/software performance, they should've also included some compliance tests for the browsers, how it parses XHTML, HTML40, CHTML and so forth. At least for the pro version.
Although there are plenty of open source alternatives for that as well. But at least then SPMark04 could've found its place between the open source solutions and full-blown test suites costing 15K$+.

While of limited value to the consumer, I'm sure such benchmark software will be invaluable to cell phone manufacturers and those wanting to create software for them.

That's why I called for the browser tests. As of right now I can't see this software being of any use to business app developers.
Cellphone manufaturers, sure. As well as review sites concentrating on mobile devices, maybe game devs can find some use for this too. And so forth, so it's probably far from a total waste as it is.
Agreed. Where's one of those WTF? images. The only use for a benchmark program would be on a computer, not something which has a 1.5" screen and can barely process anything.

Actually phones have pretty powerful processors, on the line of a 300Mhz Xscale, but most run some kind of Java virtual machine which just rapes the performance.

Well nokia Series 60 symbian phones are POWERFUL. They can run SNES, NES, GBC emulators. Its just a matter of time when more complicated games come out.
first phones get usually near 500 (7650, 3650)
104mhz and 3.5megs RAM (ngage has about 11megs)
so Ngage, and QD get the same result.
Newer Symbian 7 phones (6600 and other phones that have "themes")
get around 530-540~ and they have a background in the first test. (more colors too "64k")
124mhz if im correct.
More powerful "new" phones have about 200mhz.
So i think that phones are changing to more like computers all the time. So its useful to test the phone out. Like having a friend and use his phone to test battery capacity and other stuff before buying it.
