Muffled Sound

i have quite a weird problem, the sounds are muted (like dull) in Max Payne 2, i'v recently updated my motherboard and processor (pt. 4 2.54 Ghz) could this be the reason for my naff sound?

p.s i tried searching but found nothing on sound apart from a surround sound thingie

i dont have one that i installed, just the one i got with the PC, well in the device manager the only one that sounds like a sound card is a "Sigma Tel C-Major Audio" so that'l prolly be where the problem lies
