View Full Version : Bet you can't get this one

It seems like every brick wall I hit with BUILD is the kind of problem that nobody can ever help me with. Ever have days like that? :7

Anyways, here's my problem. I got a pair of sliding doors (not the Trek sliding doors, I'm talking about the kind where the door texture doesn't squish), well, I wanted them to automatically close after a few seconds of being open, but obviously, the SE (10 I think...?) doesn't work with that type of door (even though according to the docs, it works with "Any door sector"). So I decided instead to put Touchplates on either side and add an Activator to the door sector, so now it opens as soon as you walk up to it, and closes as soon as you're on the other side. Ironically, I think this is a little more realistic than the SE10. http://www.3drealms.com/ubb/images/icons/smile.gif

So here's my question. Even though the doors are hooked up to the Touchplates, the doors themselves are still touchable (as in you look at them, press the space bar, and they'll open/close with each press). My question is...is there any way to make this type of sliding door untouchable, so that the only way they can open and close is via the Touchplates?

Knowing my luck, prolly not, huh? :7

C3PO's doors are like that. Download SST from Dukeworld (http://www.dukeworld.com/) and have a look at the first level.
Also at the same site are FAQ (http://mapfaq.3dportal.com/) one can download. This includes a sample maps for sliding door.
Bottom line you can have sliding doors operated by touchplates.

The sector tag allows for the spacebar activation. You should be able to remove the ST for the sliding doors and still have a switch or touchplate activate them. I'm sure I've done it with switches at least.

Usurper:

These are ST25 doors. Pulling the STs out
pretty much turns these doors into very nice-looking walls. http://www.3drealms.com/ubb/images/icons/smile.gif *LOL*

Seriously though, can you point me to any
levels that do this? I remind everyone
reading...I've already got my doors working
with a touchplate. My problem is I want
them working with the touchplate ONLY. No
spacebar-activation ability.

Once more I guess. The doors you want are done in a TC called StarShip Troopers. The only difference there, they are see through. The link for the TC is
http://www.dukeworld.com/starshiptroopers in this TC you will find lots of other super effects, done by C3PO, to name one, of the talents there.
The first map of the set contains those doors. Once you open it you will see how those doors are done. In brief, two SE 15 and three Activators with correlating touchplates.

Hmmm. The way I make mine involves individual sectors. Nice for making round windows in my doors and whatnot. I'll have to dig up an old map when I get home to check how I did it. The more I think about it, I think I had to put a single activator in one of the sectors, which had to have the ST. The rest of the SE15 sectors should join in without problems. I'll scrape up a demo if anyone cares.

I heard you the first time Phoenix. While
I appreciate the suggest, I checked out
SST. I'm not downloading a 20 meg TC just
for one level. My modem's rather slow.

Sounds great Usurper, because that's
pretty much what my doors look like too
(round windows in the middles). http://www.3drealms.com/ubb/images/icons/smile.gif

A demo would be very much appreciated.
Doesn't have to be anything horribly
elaborate though. Just something that
gets the job done. http://www.3drealms.com/ubb/images/icons/smile.gif

Ok...you've got your doors made.

Put a switch next to the door w/a hitag. Put an activator in the door w/the same hitag. For a single door, put one acivator in the door. For a double door, put one acivator in one door and two acivators in the other door w/the same hitag.

Then in a NULL space, make a small room with a door ST20, put a SE xx,10 and an activator w/the same hitag.

When you hit the switch, the door will open and the close with the SE 10 delay.

If you can't get it to work, you've done something WRONG

Here you go: sample map (http://www.dukeworld.com/projectx/mattz0r/SAMPLE.ZIP).

I don't really have time to work out a tutorial for it, but it works, and you can pick it apart. Multisector sliding doors with round windows that are activated by a touchplate and autoclose. Was part of a map I was working on that had custom art, so I did a sloppy replace all, hence it looks like crap.

Thanks Usurper. Didn't know sliding doors can be made that simple. http://www.3drealms.com/ubb/images/icons/smile.gif

Ding Bat using ST20?
Usurper’s demo would help. Not sure about the round windows. With C3PO’s see through doors I need one Activator with Touchplates. The standard solid I need three Activators and switches.

BTW Teknoman, I could not resist promoting SST http://www.3drealms.com/ubb/images/icons/smile.gif

Most people don't. The only thing the old school method has going for it is the fact that you can stand in front of the sector when the door is open and press space to close it rather than have to aim at the door inside the slot and hit space. I use switches for all non-swinging doors anyway, and this gives complete control over the shape of the door.

I'm trying to remember the drawbacks of the subway method. I think they restricted the use of sounds or something. Subways, however, do work on a diagonal path, where SE15s will not. SE15s also don't drag sprites, and cause bad clipping problems if you put a sprite in a SE15 door sector.

That's okay Phoenix. It's just that with
this modem, if I have a choice between
spending two hours DLing SST, and 1 second
DLing Usurper's sample level...well...the
choice should be rather clear. http://www.3drealms.com/ubb/images/icons/wink.gif

...Speaking of Usurper's level...

Thank you Usurper! Your level really does
a great job showing how this is done! http://www.3drealms.com/ubb/images/icons/smile.gif

And you, Ding Bat, gave me a great idea!

I didn't really want to use a button to
open my doors, so instead what I did was I
mapped the wall above the doors with a switch
texture and gave the wall the same lotag as
the Activator, and a hitag of 27 (so the
button makes no sound). The result? A
perfect mimick of the old original sliding
doors...except these doors autoclose perfectly!

Thanks a lot guys! http://www.3drealms.com/ubb/images/icons/smile.gif

Glad to help.

Switch textures on walls? Didn't know that worked (door textures do the same thing of course). Nice trick.
