Since the chances of Duke3d src being released is slim, how about somone continues with the porting of build to Windows/Linux, but makes it into a form of frontend for Duke3d?

What I mean is this: The program is basically ported/enhanced build with default weapon slots (Actually, there are no programmed weapons at all) No art is included with the port either. However, add support for cons/a similar script for actions/weapons/art # assignments, and let it use .art/.dat files for art, as well as voc/wav for sound. All the user has to do is get their Duke3d/Blood/SW/etc CD, dump all the art/sounds/con's/scripts into the directory where the frontend is, and run the frontend. It will load the game's art/sound/scripts and you can play away with a nearly perfect imitation of the game.

If their's an issue with adding con support (I think its a 3dr idea), than simply make a converter that converts con to a script that this kind of build can comprehend, and in effect, its legal (none of the copyrighted data is disributed or loaded in it original form) And wheren't the Duke3d game con's put up on Dukeworld for backup purposes?

As for other legal issues, I dont see any. The port would be 100% scratch built by the team. It would, note, require the full game to run the maps/art/etc (Of which are not included in the port, alot like ZDOOM/other game ports), so any point in saying "Oh, their copying the game executable of Duke3d/X-Game, it's evil!" is false (None of the game content/exclusive source is in it, the user must buy the full game to use the port) Hence, it is 100% legal.

So, whats your make on this idea?

Oh, and the idea isnt anything like WinDuke (Which can only be done by people with the Duke src) Pus, WinDuke is only for Duke3d, this idea could apply to multiple Build games.

It's basically "How to make a Win/Linux/Amiga/etc frontend/port without waiting for the Duke3d src/Matteus to be done", which alot of people might like (People with even more ideas and TIME can add the features they want in whatever order they want instead of requesting them from Matteus)

Right now, the only person who has any hope of seeing a WinDuke is Matteus, seeing how he has the Duke3d Source and there already is a WinBuild...

A DirectX version of Duke would be cool, but it would also be overkill on today's machines.

What I'd really like to see is a version of Duke for my TI-86 and Atari 2600. That would take some REAL programming talent!

Under normal circumstances, I might have tried at such a thing, But I don't have the time.
MrEric: I doubt your TI-86 calculator would support the resolution needed to display duke3d (At least 320*200), although there are numerous raycasting engines for the texas instruments series graphing calculators. You could always do it yourself. images/icons/smile.gif
