Looks pretty good. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif Hopefully this adaption will be more faithful to the spirit of the book than the previous film. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif
So far Johnny Depp looks about right, though it's too bad that they neglected to give Wonka the goatee, again. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/redface.gif http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif But that's really a nitpick in the long run, since regardless of that detail Depp as Wonka has potential of being just about the most perfect casting imagineable IMO, and Tim Burton is a great choice for the director of a suitably weird story like this one.

depp + elfman - burton = great movie
i was a strong defender or burton for a LONG time, but now he's a hack. having put out mediocre drivel for the last 10 years.
these would have been great:
depp + elfman + Jean-Pierre Jeunet
or
depp + elfman + terry gilliam
and in the news today, holliwood continues to crap all over itself....

The movie poster does not impress me. Wonka looks like some fruity, Michael Jackson wannabee.
If Tim Burton remains true to form, expect the Oompa-Loompas to be dressed up in spikey black leather. I'm tired of paying full price at the movies to watch Burton work out his sado-maso bondage fetishes onscreen.

Depp looks as pale as one of his finest previous characters - Edward Scissorhands.
I'm hoping this film will be just as successful. Depp looks set to play a more sinister Willy Wonka. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Hell, I'd put Depp in a live action version of "The Nightmare Before Christmas" another one of Burtons all time greats. IMO!!! http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif
I actually think this is a good mesh for this movie. I mean going back and watching the original version, it really wasn't meant for kids. I thot it to be kinda scary at times.

Dahl's writings, even the ones aimed at children, were always somewhat twisted and a little darkly-toned, while at the same time having a strange sense of enjoyment and dreamlike feel to them. It's gonna be a tricky balancing act for adapting this to film, getting it wierd and bizarre enough while also at the same time still being something kids can have fun watching.

I've always hated musicals. Ever since I was old enough to speak I'd start bitching to whoever was nearby whenever a Disney movie or whatever would suddenly break out into some lame song. I'm just glad I was old enough to outgrow them when I did, since if I had to listen to any of the Phil Collins kind of shit they were putting in them, I'd probably have hung myself when I was 8. The only musical I've been able to sit through or enjoy was the South Park movie.

What is it with people saying burton has been producing crap lately? He just got done with Big Fish (which was an awesome movie), before that he did Planet of the Apes (which kinda sucked, but wasn't terrible imho). Oh no! He directed one crappy movie! That means he has been producing pretty shitty movies lately.
Since, ya know, he has done one movie in the past two years.
Seriously though, let's look at all his movies. He's done some great stuff, and the only two bad things i can think of that he did were Mars Attacks (which wasn't too bad) and planet of the apes (which also wasn't terrible). Everything else he has done has been great. Everyone has a movie that just wasn't all that great.

let's look a the scoreboard chuck:
Big Fish (2003) - I give it a 5 out of 10. Looked nice but it felt unfinished , the stories weren't very interesting. Very forgettable.
Planet of the Apes (2001) - as you mentioned it did suck. I give it a 2. Bad acting, terrible story line, really bad art direction, you name it it sucked.
Sleepy Hollow (1999) - I give it a 6. Marginally entertaining but it felt like it never really got rolling. Decent acting if you can stomach Depp's choice of how to play ichabod. Nice set's and art direction, though nothing underneath.
Mars Attacks (1996) - I enjoyed this - I say 7 out of 10. Silly but willing to make fun of itself. True to the history of cheesy sci-fi movies.
Mars Attacks is the last Burton movie I enjoyed and that was 8 years ago. He's lost it. Mediocrity is his gift to us all now. I can't and won't go see Charlie, unless I take a lot of drugs first..... http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I really thought that Gene Wilder pulled of a tragically-happy demeanor in the original, too. You get the impression that he started off quite happy in life, and stayed that way for a while, but for whatever reason, has grown increasingly tired of the idiots, ingrates, and jerks, and his smiles are a bit more forced now. You also quite easily see that he delights in the misfortune of the kids in the factory, too, which is more than a little twisted.
I remember getting the same impression from the book, too, but it has been 20 years since I've read it, so the movie could be influencing my recollection.

From the book Charlie and the Chocolate Factory:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
The great glass lift was now hovering high over the town. Inside the lift stood Mr Wonka, Grandpa Joe, and little Charlie.
'How I love my chocolate factory,' said Mr Wonka, gazing down. Then he paused, and he turned around and looked at Charlie with a most serious expression on his face. 'Do you love it too, Charlie?' he asked.
'Oh, yes,' cried Charlie, 'I think it's the most wonderful place in the whole world!'
'I am very pleased to hear you say that,' said Mr Wonka, looking more serious than ever. He went on staring at Charlie. 'Yes,' he said, 'I am very pleased indeed to hear you say that. And now I shall tell you why.' Mr Wonka cocked his head to one side and all at once the tiny twinkling wrinkles of a smile appeared around the corners of his eyes, and he said, 'You see, my dear boy, I have decided to make you a present of the whole place. As soon as you are old enough to run it, the entire factory will become yours.'
Charlie stared at Mr Wonka. Grandpa Joe opened his mouth to speak, but no words came out.
'It's quite true,' Mr Wonka said, smiling broadly now. 'I really am giving it to you. That's all right, isn't it?'
'Giving it to him?' gasped Grandpa Joe. 'You must be joking.'
'I'm not joking, sir. I'm deadly serious.'
'But . . . but . . . why should you want to give your factory to little Charlie?'
'Listen,' Mr Wonka said, 'I'm an old man. I'm much older than you think. I can't go on for ever. I've got no children of my own, no family at all. So who is going to run the factory when I get too old to do it myself? Someone's got to keep it going — if only for the sake of the Oompa-Loompas. Mind you, there are thousands of clever men who would give anything for the chance to come in and take over from me, but I don't want that sort of person. I don't want a grown-up person at all. A grown-up won't listen to me; he won't learn. He will try to do things his own way and not mine. So I have to have a child. I want a good sensible loving child, one to whom I can tell all my most precious sweet-making secrets — while I am still alive.'
------------------------------------------------------------------------
The movie with Gene Wilder had an interesting twist towards in the end where Wonka tests Charlie's honesty. (re: the Everlasting Gobstopper)

Watched it yesterday .. all hail to the cinemaxx in Essen... they show movies undubbed ever so often..
I thoght it was wicked ... in both meanings ..
i disliked the change about wonkas family and the resulting prolonged ending though.
But the way they did the oompa loompas was way more suitable than the old version.. (this ones a bit closer to the book)
I just saw it then.. I really enjoyed it.
There was definitely that Tim Burton feel in the movie that gave it abit of an edge over the old classic.
Johnny Depp done a fantastic job in it, loved the way he dances everytime the Oompa Loompas sing http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

The reason Johnny Depp's smile looks fake is because it is supposed to look that way. He is trying to make it seem like he is faking the happiness. Willy isn't really a happy person in the movie, but tries to make it seem like he is. So, Johnny Depp actually did another fantastic job. He wanted you to notice the fake smiles, and you did. He did what he was supposed to do.
He is trying to seem like a happy person around the kids, but he really isn't. He doesn't really seem to like the children at all. He pretty much knows which kids are going to be bad kids. The only time you see Depp with a real smile is when he is around Charlie.
To me personally, you can't compare (and you shouldn't) the Gene Wilder "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory" to Tim Burton's "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory". They are the same story and same characters, but they are still so different. Thats me though.
I never read the book, but as I understand it Tim Burton's was much closer to the book than Gene Wilder's.
If I did have to pick though, I'd have to say I like Tim Burton's version more. The style was just much more enjoyable. I do prefer the old oompa-loompa songs though.

New movie: Parts greater than the whole. There was basically no charlie story in the new film, infact he pretty much dissapears for a great section of the movie. Shit CGI. Pointless narrator. Totally miss pitched moments (unlce joes dance out of bed for example). Horrible songs and Depp never really seems like a character, more just like Depp having fun. Thankfully when Depp tries to be fun he is. Once again basically Depp saves a movie totally.

It isn't. Just seems people got the idea from a press release or something.
