Not that I believed for just one second that this will be even based on the book....
And I liked Ringu more than The Ring. Ringu was at least really scary. The Ring was just "OMG! WTF! BOO!"

I perferrred the ring to ringu. I think the higher production levels really helped it, especially the contents of the video itself and the horse scene was a great addition which worked perfectly for western audiences.

The Ring was a decent movie. Better than most of the crap they call "horror" coming out of Hollywood over the last 20 years. I can't really imagine a sequel. I am skeptical about their ability to attain the same level quality with the story, but I guess we'll see.

I think the scene that was the creepiest in the original was when the mother comes home after finding the little girl in the well, and tells her kid what happened.

"You're not supposed to help her!"

The look on the kid's face when he said that was priceless...

The bit in the first one that made me jump was at the funerals, [insertname] was talking with [insertname] and one of the women said she still remember the look on her face (The face of the girl that dies in the beggining in the house with her friend), and you see a 2 seconds flashback of her dead corpse in the closet. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mryuck.gif Even Micheal JaX0r wouldn't touch that crap.

I remember that. T'was gross. How they got away with PG-13 with discusting scenes like that is beyond me.

And, if you watch the deleted scenes (from the VHS version, plays after the film) - they show what the guy looked like in the apartment near the end. I still cringe. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/eek.gif

I don't like Ringu. I saw it last year, and as I recall it was lacking in quite a few places that The Ring was not. I'm not saying The Ring was the best horror ever -- it's not. It's just a better horror movie than it's Japanese counterpart.

I'm interested in seeing where they'll take it with a sequel. Probably not anyplace new, but you never know.

The made-for-TV movie (Ringu: Kanzen-ban) was also based on the same novel. The movie you think of as the original came three years after Ringu: Kanzen-ban.

So, if The Ring 2 is a remake of Ringu 2 (or simply a sequel to The Ring, but still a remake in your eyes), then I'd say Ringu is a remake of Ringu: Kanzen-ban. That would mean that you do like some remakes.

If I've learnt one thing from japanese horror movies is that they find kids and women with wet hair terrifying!

The American remake of Ringu was pointless. It elaborated on the original story too much, and also added some pointless bits as well - the stuff about the horses, being the main thing that springs to mind. Also, the spooky video thing was ruined in the remake, with all that weird stuff in it....

There was a video in Ringu but it was vry different. It was less creepy but more bizarre.
The great thing about Ringu was (to me at least) that it relied on atmosphere to scare you instead of monsters jumping out of closets. It had more the philosophy of Alien and Jaws behind it concerning the scares instead of Friday the 13th and the remake of The Haunting. It let you know but it didn't show. Watch it, it's great.

They pissed all over the DVD release of Chariots of Fire in their review. The reviewer said it was boring. The f#ckin' thing won best picture for God's sake.

Ya, I don't pay much attention to their reviews, but I expected Ring 2 to be a complete lemon that everyone would pan. I don't recall there ever being a horror movie that spawned a good sequel.

Ya, I suppose. I don't really think of Evil Dead II as a sequel to be honest. It's more of a remake than anything, with a comedic slant. Superior to the original in many ways, but pretty much the same movie from a story perspective. Used more as a vehicle to showcase Bruce Campbell's talents and Sam Raimi's insane love of interesting and original cinematography. Just about my favourite horror flick of all time, even though there's not much to scare you in it. It just so damn much fun to watch.

The Night of the Living Dead "sequels" aren't really sequels either. They are just the same story told from different perspectives with different people. One time it's people holed up in a house, the next time in a shopping mall, etc etc. I guess I think of "sequel" as something that continues a story at some point after it left off in the previous film, with at least some of the same characters. Kind of like "Hannibal" is to "Silence of the Lambs", or even "Psycho II" to the original "Psycho" (although the continuity link in that one is certainly weaker). Anyway, most horror movies, and I guess most movies in general are best without a number at the end of their name, with a few notable exceptions.

Scream

I actually thought the first of these films was decent. Not great, but somewhat original in a world where people actually like the shit they call horror these days. I am so sick of the "Scream" (ya, I know, good nickname but bad movie) and Wes Craven formulaic junk that has been pushed at us since the 80s. The horror genre has been pretty dead because of that crap for a long time. Wes Craven sucks. Had to be said.

The Ring was at least somewhat original. The suspense was fairly good as the days went by and you got closer to the inevitable, and I always like movies that start with the rational character who gradually gets more and more terrified as they realize their time is running short.

The look on that kid's face when he said to his mother near the end of the movie "You're not supposed to help her!" was pretty creepy. Good moment.

Anyway, the sequel will be a rental at some point.

No.
It would probably be fair to say that Dawn of the Dead takes place at about the same time as Night of the Living Dead, but Day of the Dead is a bit farther down the line after the zombies have pretty much taken over the earth. The new one, Land of the Dead, is even farther down the line where the zombies have completely taken over the world except for one last walled in city where the last surviving humans live.

My point was not when they take place on a timeline. My point is they have no continuity of characters or story. It's different people in different circumstances every time. The only thing that is common to the films is the zombies themselves. I don't really look at those as sequels, but as a collection of films within a very specific genre, that's all.
