I have a Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS and I can't get NOLF's music to sound right. Apparently they used a technique to load a soundfont-like file that makes midi files sound like that. I was surprised to hear NOLF used midis but it is true.

I think my card stops it from loading because the music sounds terrible....anyone every get this problem? http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Is this NOLF 1 or NOLF 2?

Did you try disabling sound hardware support in the Launcher?

Its NOLF1, there is no hardware music option. If you mean a command-line option then what it is it? I just find this frustrating....the first time I am able to run nolf at perfect frames with full details and my music sounds funky.... http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mryuck.gif

Try switching off 'Sound Filtering Effects' when you get to the main menu. (It's under 'Performance')

If that doesn't work, try lowering your sound hardware acceleration. "Start-->Control Panel-->Sound, Speech & Audio Devices-->Sounds and Audio Devices" Click the Audio tab, then the Advanced button, then the Performance tab. Try lowering the sound acceleration.

(Do you have the latest drivers for your Audigy card?)

Tried all that and got squat results. Yes, my drivers are up-to-date. Apparently NOLF's outdated ways of music are no longer supported I guess.... http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/doh.gif

You think they could have stuck with digital.....

That's weird. I have an Audigy Gamer card and both versions of NOLF work fine for me.

I remember when the NOLF 2 demo was released, they included a small Windows Media codec update program in the NOLF 2 demo root directory called WMFADist.exe Apparently, you could use it to update your Windows sound codecs if you were having sound problems. You can download a copy here:

http://www.acoustica.com/files/3rdparty/wmfadist.exe

(I'm assuming that if Lithtech is using the same sound system for NOLF 2 as for NOLF 1, that this could help.)

Hit mute on your midi in windows and see if nolf 2 has no music. That will tell me if its the same.

I'm going to try that codec thing...hopefully it helps. Btw, do you know what nolf is supposed to sound like? I have an older machine so I know. It isnt too bad....but it sounds off....like some effects are missing in certain melodies. It's hard to explain.....

Well that's interesting.

I muted 'Midi Synth' on my mixer control and the music switched off completely. I know that NOLF's music is split up into small chunks under the control of DirectMusic but I have no idea why MIDI would have anything to do with it. Here's what I'm using for MIDI, BTW:

Sorry to revive an old dead thread, however since reinstalling NOLF it has the same wierd music errors. Its missing certain effects that make the music sound terrible. Of course its still playable but I can't help but giggle at how terrible it sounds!

I wondered if anyone found the solution for modern sound cards? http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Not sure if it's addressing the same problem, but try reading this (http://thegluefactory.com/forums/showthread.php?t=3128&highlight=music).

If that doesn't fix it, search around that forum a bit and see what else you can find out. They helped me get the game running a year or two ago when I had some problems of my own.

THANK-YOU!! http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/love.gif

I wonder if there is a way to do this only when I start NOLF? I'm unsure whether this will have side effects with anything else?
