This year was one of the best years in gaming ever. The second half was just full of high budget triple A titles. Oh yes, this was a true Golden Age of Gaming(or golden quarter of a year :p). Among those beasts of games I chose these(mind you I haven't played GTA IV nor MGS IV; not that I care about them really):
5. Assassin's Creed.
Interesting storytelling with the story being intriguing at the same time, breathtaking looking cities, simple yet compelling gameplay with a simplistic yet satisfying combat system. Immersive and atmospheric, even though kind of repetitive.
4. Brothers in Arms: Hell's Highway.
Evolutionary approach to the old formula. Cover system, a kind of health regen that is-not-a-health-regen-but-it-seems-so, one more team, more variety in gameplay, even better storyline with a tearful ending. And, of course, amazing graphics.
3. Dead Space.
A survival horror set in space. This alone is a selling point since I can't remember a lot of survival horrors set in space(System Shocks...erm...Doom 3 is not a horror game...umm, yeah). The atmosphere is often overwhelming, the sense of dread is always present, the combat is innovative and the upgrade system is rewarding. Oh, and there's a different survival horror than RE's, SH's and FF's. Heh.
2. Mirror's Edge.
This game charmed me. The presentation: the way the city looks, the strong colors, the cleanness, the amazing music, the atmospheric although very simplistic story, and finally the gameplay, all this is so original and so compelling it breaks my heart knowing the game sells so badly.
1. Fallout 3.
The game is just plain awesome. Huge world, engaging quests, immersive atmosphere. Surprisingly satisfying gunplay(with VATS). Hundreds of mods that are already out and that are going to be created are increasing its life expectancy ad infinitum.
As you can see 3 out of 5 are new ip's, and 2 out of them are sponsored by EA. A change of politics? I sure hope so. With that kind of money EA should've started financing new ip's a long long time ago. Still better now than never.
I sincerely hope that 2009 will bring us even more new ip's.
Amen.
